Quick tip on onions… take a damp paper towel or dish rag and put it beside your onions as you cut them and it won’t burn your eyes. I thought it was crazy until I tried it. Works wonders!
We dehydrate half of our pumpkin and can the rest. I powder the dried pumpkin and rehydrate it with the liquid from the jars of canned pumpkin. I them blend the two together until I get the right consistency. Works great for pies or whatever you need.
😊 Thank you for sharing. Bringing along the camera does add so much time to how long it takes to complete anything. I so appreciate when you do share and know that some days you just have to do things because there are so many. Again thank you
You are an awesome lady who has a heart of gold! I see it 😀. Thank for the cooking lesson. Wow gumbo looks great. God bless you and your family, Rachel. From TerriJo in British Columbia
I love seeing your children and grandchildren around you! The food looks delicious! You’re just a wonderful person I absolutely love watching you guys! I always have so much to learn!🤗🤗
That Gumbo looks fantastic Rachel and yes I do have an old pot to cook it in so I will have a go one day on making it. Oh yeh, proud Grandma I see at the end too!!
Love the family time and birthday prep. One note to save money on vanilla extract. I've made my own vanilla from bean pods and cheap vodka or rum. You just keep adding the extract carrier as you empty it. It takes 3-6 months to steep but lasts forever.
I live in Louisiana, the only thing I would have done is cook the roux in the skillet and cook the sausage in the pot and added the roux to the pot, when adding the chicken brou, it would have broken the crumbs from the bottom of the pot, adding more flavor. Love your videos, keep up the good work.
Love watching your videos!! It’s very calming vs the doom and gloom im seeing in similar channels. I wasn’t fast enough to grab that gumbo recipe. I guess I will rewatch ❤
I, too, am a Louisiana transplant! Small town about 50 miles north of Lake Charles called DeRidder. I was always told to bring my roux to the color of a old fashion shopping bag! Really enjoy your channel :)
Hi Rachel. The gumbo looked delicious and the pumpkin roll is one of my favorites. Happy Birthday to your son. Rachel, your grandson is so adorable. God Bless you all. Stay healthy. Mari'a. 👍👍👍👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
If you have the freezer space you can cook, puree and freeze your pumpkin. This is easier than canning and draining the canned pumpkin chunks. I love your videos!
It sure smells wonderful! Also delicious! Yes for first time making pumpkin roll it turned out great! The porch looks so homey, & inviting. The ending is precious, enjoy your grand baby, they grow up fast!
I’m a 6 generation native Texan and it takes me all day to make my gumbo. I’ve been craving it all week and hear you are making it. ❤ I make my roux almost black! It takes 45 minutes just to make that. 😂 I want shrimp, crab, crawfish and chicken in mine.
Rachel..you are just too cute! I appreciate you & Todd so much. It's so nice you guys let us in on your day to day lives. Thank you!! I wish I lived a little closer, (although I do live in Indiana), we'd cook & can up a storm. I feel like we should be soul sisters..lol
Sweet video, baby matching grandma! Your porch looks like a welcoming and comfortable place to rest. I love pumpkin roll! I always separate my eggs, whip up the whites then fold them in. Makes a wonderful light, spongey roll Thanks for this wonderful taste of fall video!
Never realized what gumbo was looked like it would be so good! And the pumpkin roll looked so delicious tissue the season I may have to just make one soon 😋
Hi 👋🏻 I just found your channel through makeitmake. I find it's incredible and what totally got me was 1. Your glasses 🥂 👓 2. Your Brussel sproats recipe, so unusual. You even love or hate them. I love them 💜
Awww! What a beautiful day! You are such a great mom and grandma! I always loved it when my mama made my favorite dinner on my birthday! That gumbo and pumpkin roll looked delicious!
Such a sweet baby and you look sooooo happy! To buy a pound of organic butter up here is around $10. The gumbo recipe looks delicious as does the pumpkin roll. Linda, Quebec city Canada
I just love watching anything you share with us! Isn’t being a Grand wonderful? Like all the love yo7 have for your children magnified by infinite! How is your sweet fur baby doing?
The last time I purchase butter there was no limit on how much you could get so I bought a case of 36 for $1.71 lb. Placed it in the freezer. I have gee in the pantry.
Oh yeah, love gumbo. I’m making some next weekend. I use rotisserie chickens and then boil the bones and skin for the stock. Makes and amazing gumbo. My son is at university and when he comes home, that’s what he wants so I keep servings in the freezer for him at all times. He’ll even eat it in the summer ;). Your grand baby is beautiful! Happy Birthday to your son!
OH Rachel I had homemade Gumbo in New Orleans when I visited a friend about 40 yrs ago. It was fabulous & made so traditionally. I call the colour a Copper Penny colour & yes I remember penny's :) Great Video Rachel LOVED IT !!!!! Cheers Denise- Australia
If I ask my husband or son what birthday dinner the shout is GUMBO, yes it's an act of love. I now make enough to freeze leaving out the shrimp and okra. I add that when needed. Thanks for showing another way to make gumbo, there are as many ways as households.
You are glowing holding that baby, God Bless, I made my first cake roll for Xmas last Christmas, but will try a pumpkin roll for Thanksgiving, your Gumbo looks fab!
The price of anything is a shock when you don’t go into the store often. I was shocked at bare spots also. Went a week later and peanut butter still wasn’t stocked. All looks yummy!
Hi, I have been watching your videos for so long. I never knew you lived in Louisiana. I was born and raised in East Baton Rouge. I an so home sick. Thank you for the video, I will be cooking Gumbo tomorrow night.
Quick tip on onions… take a damp paper towel or dish rag and put it beside your onions as you cut them and it won’t burn your eyes. I thought it was crazy until I tried it. Works wonders!
I usually use a match, stick end in my mouth, unlit of course! Gonna try your idea.
You are one of the hardest working persons I know 🎉
Love seeing you glow holding that sweet baby 🥰🥰 And also love the silly smile while you enjoyed your yummy dessert 🧡 Great to see you happy!!!
My husband is a New Orleans native. He cooks alot of Gumbo, Jambalaya, red beans and rice and more. Love it all.💗💗💗💗
It's amazing how much you get done in a couple of hours. My back gives out on me.
We dehydrate half of our pumpkin and can the rest. I powder the dried pumpkin and rehydrate it with the liquid from the jars of canned pumpkin. I them blend the two together until I get the right consistency. Works great for pies or whatever you need.

Love the little pooch at the dishwasher helping with the pre wash. Mine do that too.

You should freeze dry your pumpkin and powder it. No waiting for it to drain and you get the consistency you want!

I lived in Louisiana for 25 years. I still make my gumbo. My daughters still live there. I buy lots of Cajun sausage to bring back when I visit them.
I've never tried to make a pumpkin roll before but now I want to! Your face at the end says it is a must try 😀
