    Yes! You can remove, repair, and replace the broken internal freezer door on your single-door, 2-way, Dometic, Norcold or other similar Refrigerator Freezer in your RV, camper, trailer, caravan or boat. This video helps you avoid EXPENSIVE collateral damage and is thorough and easy.
    IMPORTANT: We now recommend that you wind / tension your spring by only 1/4 turn. This is usually enough to close the door without putting too much stress on old plastic.
    PARTS:
    iFiXiFi parts are reengineered, stronger, upgraded, designed / made in the USA. iFiXiFi replacement parts for Dometic are made better than OEM and priced better than OEM.

    Why would you need to repair or replace your freezer door?
    If your Dometic freezer door doesn't close all the way, it can be a real problem! Frozen food can thaw out. Delicate food in the refrigerator can freeze. And you use more propane or electricity to keep things cold.
    How do you remove the door?
    BE CAREFUL: wear eye and hand protection. There may be risks including sharp and flying parts.
    BE GENTLE: older plastic gets brittle and fragile
    To remove the inner freezer door:
    1) Turn the fridge off and let the interior and parts warm up so they're more flexible.
    2) Open the outer fridge door as wide as you can.
    3) Open the inner freezer door.
    4) Slide the Air Shim between the right edge of the freezer door and the wall of the fridge / freezer
    5) Gently and slowly inflate the Air Shim to widen the gap between the freezer door and fridge wall. This exposes the nylon "bolt" at the bottom right of the freezer door.
    7) Use the screwdriver to gently depress the bolt into the wall of the fridge. This disengages the bold from the receiver on the freezer door.
    8) Pull the right bottom side of the freezer door gently towards you. The freezer door should now be free.
    9) Remove the freezer hinge assembly from the left and right sides of the fridge wall.
    IMPORTANT: the left and right hinge assemblies are different. Identify the left and right assemblies so you don't mix them up.
    To replace a broken spring housing / casing:
    1) Remove the bolt / spring from the broken casing.
    2) Place the bolt / spring into the new casing. Make sure the protruding leg of the spring pokes through the slot in the base of the casing cylinder. The end of the bolt is pointed and will pop through the hole at the bottom of the well of the casing cylinder.
    To replace the freezer door:
    1) Place the left freezer hinge assembly back in the hole in the wall on the left side of the fridge.
    2) Rotate the arm of the left freezer hinge assembly a quarter turn to about the 3 o'clock position.
    3) Place the right freezer hinge assembly back in the hole in the wall on the right side of the fridge.
    4) Rotate the arm of the right freezer hinge assembly a quarter turn to about the 9 o'clock position.
    5) Angle the freezer door slightly downward (like you are about to open it).
    6) Press the left edge of the freezer door firmly into the bolt and wiggle the freezer door slightly in the open-closed direction. You should hear and feel the bolt engage the receiver on the freezer door.
    7) Using your finger or tool, depress the right hinge bolt firmly into the refrigerator wall.
    8) Pivot right side of freezer door onto bolt and position / rotate until you feel and hear bolt engage with receiver.
    9) Rotate arm of left freezer hinge assembly in the clockwise direction until the 12 o'clock position. The protrusion on arm engages small hole in the fridge wall
    10) Rotate the arm of the right freezer hinge assembly in the counterclockwise direction until the 12 o'clock position. The protrusion on the arm engages the small hole in the fridge wall.
    11) Test installation. Open the freezer door. Release. It should close on its own. Increase the pre-load on the spring if it does not close all the way.

    We purchased a 2004 Alpenlite camper recently. While cleaning the freezer one of the hinges broke off (the other side was already gone). It was brittle and broke easily. I was so glad to find this video and ordered the replacement parts. My husband fixed it in no time and saved us a bundle. Thank you so much for making available the replacement parts and for the excellent video instructions!

    It’s all about the right tool and right directions! Thank you for this video along with your parts to purchase. Not being able to get someone to do this repair, I purchased an air shim, followed your directions and the door came off without a hitch. It was as I suspected, left spring broke. I now have a needed clean refrigerator, wish me luck on the reassembly! I’ll post your link to my RV users group.

    I couldn't have done it without you and this great instructional video. I ordered your replacement parts on eBay, received them promptly and installed the hinges on the door within ten minutes. Because the large tabs on my old spring housings were completely broken off, I initially thought that my hinges were different than these. I had to remove the door, to realize that my old hinges were just like these. Salute! And firm handshake, sir!!

    In April 2019, we bought our 2008 Airstream Safari SE 23FB. The previous owners had installed velcro to "help" keep the freezer door closed. We finally got frustrated enough that I started looking to try to find a replacement freezer door, thinking that was the problem. In the process, we stumbled across your video and am I glad we did. Your video provides clear, straight forward visual and descriptive guidance on how to perform the repair. We bought your part through Ebay and the Air Shim on Amazon. We completed the replacement in about 15 minutes and for the first time we have a freezer door that works. Think that this will also help our frosting problem as we now have a true seal without the velcro on the door and the freezer. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    I do hope it will be as easy as you showed us. My problem however is that the door on the left is broken and i will half to replace the door.

    • @ifixifi
      @ifixifi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi William!
      Maybe, maybe not.
      If "the door on the left is broken" means that the bolt receiver is broken, there is a "frugal fix". The bolt receiver is the female X-shaped socket on each side of the freezer door. The bolt receiver is an integral (one-piece) molding on some Dometic freezer doors, and a separate screwed-on part on others. The separate part is called a "hinge plate".
      If you have a door with a broken, one-piece, integral bolt receiver, here's what you can do:
      Get a hinge plate. (We sell them on ifixifi.co, Ebay and Amazon.)
      Use appropriate safety equipment and techniques.
      Take flat file, a grinder on a Dremel tool, a hot knife, a hacksaw blade or other similar tool to carefully remove the part of the door with the integral bolt receiver. Remember to leave the plastic that forms the visible, front wall of the door. Use the new hinge plate and the good side of your door as a guide for what plastic to remove.
      Using the new hinge plate and good side of your door as a template, put the new hinge plate in its temporary position. Mark and drill pilot holes for 2 stainless steel pan head screws.
      Screw the new hinge plate into place.
      Compared to a $120 - $150 new door, this can save you enough to put food in your freezer.

    The installation of your Spring Housings was quite easy. The freezer door closed tightly on its own but fell off when I opened it again. The left female Plus on the freezer door had shattered. In your video you showed a screwed in part as you had the same issue yourself. Just wondering where I could get one like this or do I need to purchase an OEM door?

    I ordered and got these also. Installed them and in about the 4 th time opening the door (and wasn’t opening it the stoppers even) and the left side broke where the + is on the door itself. Now I either have to find another door or hope I can fix/glue it enough that it holds? It’s so brittle there. Really poor design. But your parts worked and the right side was broken so it did fix that

    • @ifixifi
      @ifixifi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Ken! What year and model of RV do you have? These Dometic fridges are able to last decades, because they have almost no moving parts. Pretty much just the outer fridge door and the inner freezer door are the only moving parts. What model Dometic fridge do you have? We had the same problem with our door. The part of the hinge with the female plus sign that is molded into the freezer door itself just gets brittle with use and age. Problem is, the freezer door is VERY hard to find and VERY expensive (like $200). Getting a new fridge isn't an option, either. It's unnecessary, and a new one will cost you over $1000. We've got one work-around solution, and are working on an iFiXiFi replacement freezer door project. We haven't detailed the work-around solution in a video (yet), but you can get a hint of what we did in our latest video, here: th-cam.com/video/A4v5e26DjF8/w-d-xo.html
      Basically, if you have a freezer door with molded-in hinge plates, you can use a coping saw or a Dremel to carefully remove enough material to make room for a pair of iFiXiFi hinge plates that screw into the bottom of your modified old door.
      Let us know if you need our help. If you'd like, you can contact us by email or by phone. You'll find that info on our website ifixifi.co (no "m").
      If you're willing, you could send us your old door, and we could fix it for the cost of the parts. That way we can use your door as a model for our video to show others how to do the modification.

      Oh no! Are you sure you pre-loaded the springs by 90 or 180 degrees? It's pretty rare, but sometimes the springs themselves are worn out. (We're trying to find a way to cut prices on those OEM springs, too.) You may be able to find some more answers on our website: ifixifi.co (no "m").

    How can you tell which springs bolt assembly is right or left? Mine have been mixed and are not coloured left blue right yellow!

    • @ifixifi
      @ifixifi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! The bolts are the same on both sides. The springs are wound / coiled in opposite directions. It's very hard to describe in words how to tell which spring goes where. I'm going to post a new video soon. Until then, try one of these techniques:
      1) The spring needs to be in the position where its coil tightens when you open the door. You might be able to picture this mentally, or use the fridge as a model.
      OR
      2) Make a "thumbs up" sign with your right hand. If the top coil of the spring turns in the direction of your curved fingers, it's a right hasnded spring. The right handed spring goes in the left side of the fridge.

    So, I bought your replacement pieces, got the springs correctly placed in them, put the door back in and it closes but doesn’t stay closed all the way and doesn’t snap back at all. Any suggestions?

    • @ifixifi
      @ifixifi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm. That shouldn't happen. You usually don't need new springs. Did you remember to preload the springs by rotating the spring housing arms downward? Did you remember to "wind up" the springs by rotating the spring housing arms back up into the "upright and locked" position? We have more than one video on how to do this. Take a look to see if that doesn't help solve this mystery.

    After successfully changing the spring, the door shuts but I am no longer getting a solid seal and have ice forming faster than normal along the top edge of the door and inside the freezer compartment. Any input on how to resolve?

    • @ifixifi
      @ifixifi  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! That's a real head-scratcher. One guess: The door is made of 2 pieces, clamshelled together. It's possible that the pieces got displaced during the removal / reinstallation process. Another guess: Maybe the gasket got displaced and is jamming up at some point. And another one: Is it possible that only one of the spring mechanisms is engaging?

    • @loannekuller2325
      @loannekuller2325 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ifixifi Good input, who knows! I guess I’ll live with scraping the ice away.

    • @ifixifi
      @ifixifi  ปีที่แล้ว

      Another possibility: Now that your freezer door closes fully, it could be that your freezer is actually getting cold enough to freeze, including freezing the humidity in the air (especially if you are in a humid climate). Before you fixed your door, maybe it didn't get cold enough to do that. We noticed this with our own door. Before the fix, the freezer would keep pre-frozen things cold, but wouldn't actually freeze anything.

    • @loannekuller2325
      @loannekuller2325 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ifixifi Fortunately things are freezing and prior to fixing thins froze well too. Humidity could be a factor, I’ll have to see if winter weather makes a difference.

      @@shawnaleanne219 We're not 100% sure. We've tried to find a parts diagram for Dometic RM460, but had no luck. Odds are in your favor, though. Dometic tends to reuse parts over many generations of refrigerators. Also, in the service manual for your model, on page 9, figure 11 and 12 appear to show this part. If it works, let us know, so we can update our parts library for other campers. And if it doesn't fit you can get a refund, and also please let us know.
