This was the best movie I have ever seen. Psychological thriller and the ending 😭 according to Google translate Akelarre simply means coven. Love your videos liked and subscribed for life ❤
Not exactly feminist. You can tell it was directed by a man. The truth is, not all women accused of witchcraft were young and beautiful, giving a future male director an excuse to capitalize on some nude scenes. In Salem at least, many of the women accused were closer to middle aged, had real estate that other people in the town wanted, and sometimes weren't that popular. And it was the young prepubescent girls, who the judges had the hots for, that were the accusers. Oh, those judges; so protective of the little girls. In Europe, the women accused of witchcraft would very likely be women who were older and single or widowed and living on the outskirts of society......women who had to support themselves, and therefore probably HAD to turn to delivering services like telling fortunes or alternative healing.
A vast majority of accused were indeed women. No one was safe from accusations, be it male or female, it was those who were seen as a burden to society or were a threat to the social norm. I feel this film had a group of connected young women having a great time together. Someone thought this was the most absurd thing and proclaimed witches. They stuck together throughout the whole film, playing on the judges fantasies to buy themselves what precious time they had left.
Highly recommend you watch it in the original Spanish, because the actors are effing phenomenal. The stuff about the dialects, "speak Christian", gets lost in the English.
The witch trials in the Basque Country were pretty hardcore, Pierre de Lancre was absolutely awful, he was very very powerful and did pretty much anything he wanted. There might have been a lot of politics behind it according to a renowned researcher from here (the basque country) ^^ Very interesting video, thank you for drawing attention to our history in a true fashion :)
@@witchwayofficial you’re welcome! I watched Luna Nera couple months ago and love it! It came across my suggested series to watch again on Netflix and I wondered if a season 2 was coming. So I hoped on TH-cam to see if anyone was speaking about S2 release date when your video popped up in the search! After that I clicked your channel to see what it’s all about and liked what I saw so I subbed ❤️
Aquelarre in spanish come from basque Akelarre, that come from Ake, Aker (male goat) and lar, larre (field), is like field of the male goat (my english is not very good, sorry). The sorginak, witches in basque mithology, have many etymological meaning theories, but i like "sor" (born) and "gin" (made), is like midwife. According to legend pre-christian, they was priests of Mari, a goddest that personifies the Mother Earth (Amalur in basque, Mother: Ama; Earth: Lur) that have similar background with Gaia and Hekate. Is the major divinite of Basque pre-christian myths. Ok, enough nerd, i like your channel, i see a lot of your videos, is very underrated, you must have at least 10 times more views and subs, not stop, you need more time. Maybe make a review of "I Married a Witch" (1942), maybe...
Thank you for this, both the information and the support. I recently watched I Married A Witch and that movie hasn't really aged well! Its still charming though. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately it is true that many people use the modern system to unjustly accuse others with their own motives in mind. Since you mentioned the statistic being false accusations, at least they are being found to be exactly that, false. Every accusation needs to be fully investigated to find truth to ensure the guilty are brought to justice, whether it be the accused or the accuser. As to who is responsible for the film, I can’t speak to the writers agenda, but as mentioned in my review, this film is based off ‘On the Inconstancy of Witches’, written in 1612, where the “judge” used their own prejudice to condemn the accused and people were physically tortured until they confessed. You would hope that we have come a long way since then but some people do still fall between the cracks. It is a flawed system though it is based off of ‘innocent until proven guilty’. At least today people have a right to defend themselves and don’t have needles jammed into their bodies in order to prove their guilt or innocence!

I loved this movie, my guess is that the old lady was really the witch all along.
Apparently the song she and the other women sing at the end is about the tide coming in, so I’m wondering about the fate of the accused witches.
@@witchwayofficial thank you. This takes the movie from me being annoyed at the ending to liking it.

Basque is not a dialect, it's a language
@a.4386 they call it a dialect in the movie, but the note is appreciated.

Awesome review I’m a new subbie from the Luna Nera video

I want movies like coven of sisters 😩
They are few and far between I am afraid, what a beautiful movie!
@@witchwayofficial it is a movie? Because I don’t find it
Coven of Sisters is just the english release for Akelarre. But I can't find any other films like it, it's truly one of a kind.

I think that Akerbeltza is Pan, and Mari is Hekate.
@@witchwayofficial In the Basque Country they called the Devil Akerbeltza which means "black male goat".
Amazing movie. Sad people had to go through that though.
