Having worked for John Deere in the late 1970's, I knew this was an older JD as they were in the 8630 series when I worked so the 40 series must have come out soon afterwards. Nice work on the video, well done. And I surely agree that 8640 was purring right along, but knew it had a good load to pull.
Great video Bill. I love watching the older equipment as much as the newer stuff if not more. That 512 is a big load for the old girl but she seems to be working well.
Yes Jeff, he could easily go a gear faster. I had an 8630 and it was turned up to 300 HP. I had it turned down to 250 HP. I pulled most all my implements in a higher gear with the engine throttled down.
Has this been "updated with a 50 series engine? The 8640s were not as bad as the 8440 or the 4840. There was some serious issues with those engines. The 619 was a 531bored 1/4". Those 531s in the 7520/6030 were down right powerful for their size. Nobody could build a tractor to equal a 6030 until years later. The early 466s had power but couldn't stay together. For the guy saying theirs turned 450, a 619 pumping 450? Ummmm, dude, a 619 at 350 hp was short lived. A 531at 225 would live just fine. A 619 at 300 was about the same. Anymore in stock form had too much fire.
NICE!!! My aunt an Uncle have a farm in Southern Minnesota and last time I was there I think they have a machine very similar in size, I think my uncle said it has a 55 ft tiller. They run around 1000 acres I think amongst 5 different fields, They did have like 1500 acres but they got outbid by a couple other farmers for some other ground, one of the pieces was 300 acres I believe, they grow corn and soybeans. God bless
Lovely to see this tractor in action Bill! Fantastic sound and she looks like new. Btw, is it common for farmers in your area to work on a Sunday? I always thought a lot of US-farmers are churchgoers but is it 'normal' to work Sundays? (Not that I judge anyone that does or doesn't).
stille og ikke mindst rolig jordbrug- mange tak for det
Love that there's no electronics involved here just horsepower - look after this tractor and it'll still be discing for you in 40 years time.

Awesome to see the 8640 from my era of growing up on our family farm. Thank you!
Ticky66MN I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment.

Terry Presnal Thanks. Paul did mention that this was his first day using the 512. And it was pulling hard so he just had to keep it slow.

Noticed a hint of slippage.

It looks like the tractor could go a small amount faster. He speeds up a little later in the video.

Another excellent video, Bill.
Great to see the old ones out still. No satellite GPS involved there.
fergie35X You got it. Thanks.

That cultivator makes a great job. The tractor, as nice as it gets.
That ain’t no cultivator that’s a disc ripper you run a cultivator over after or disc it doesn’t matter
Nice sounding tractor...
