  • The rear freehub on My Trek DualSport3 is listed as a Formula DC-22. It was working relatively fine for a couple of years but went silent one day in Batam, immediately after I rode through a brief patch of mud. Not sure how that happened, but it required a teardown to check and clean, to ensure the pawls are engaging fully, and won't fail under load.
The hub requires a free hub removal tool, the steps are quite straightforward but the freehub body's little ball bearings are a torture, unless you have small hands. Post servicing, the power transfer feels stronger and the freewheel clicks are re-assuringly loud.

You noted that an 11mm hex wrench wasn't required, but if you wanted to replace the freehub without disassembling it then I suppose you'd still need one, is that correct?

Not for this particular freehub which does not utilise a 11mm hex wrench, but instead it has grooves on both sides inside, and a standard freehub removal tool would work perfectly. Same for reassembly.
