About Tendou... He's deeper than just a "weird" character, I'm happy you saw that.
One thing, I'm not sure if you missed it, but when they lost he said "Farewell... My paradise" and it has such a strong meaning, since childhood he was known as weird, but when playing voleyball he felt in the right place, it was the place he was admired and treated as someone special, not a freak but a genius. And now, he's retiring from Voleyball, this "safe place" is gone for him. That really breaks my heart.

One of my favorite things about this series is how it NORMALIZES CRYING for these highschool boys. Furudate-sensei (creator) did a great job in showing us how passionate/invested these young athletes are in their sport, helping us empathize with the heartbreak that comes with losing.

Yes, and it's never seen as embarrassing or negative in any way. Altho I guess it's not surprising, coz irl Interhigh/Spring Tourney media coverage seem to show both girls' and boys' teams crying fairly often, and both in the same light.

When the Shiratorizawa Coach says, "Once the awards ceremony is over, get on the bus," it's actually a reference back a couple episodes where Tendo mentioned that if the coach isn't satisfied with the game, he'll make everyone run back to campus instead of the taking the bus as punishment.
Cool little detail that even though they lost, the coach thought this team still played as well as they could have

    25:16 Actually, that WAS acknowledgement.
Ushijima is a senior. This is his last high school match. When he says “I will defeat you next time” he’s inherently accepting there WILL be a next time, because he believes these two are good enough to challenge him again either in college or beyond.
That was a challenge, but also high praise from Ushijima.

Tendou isn't scared to talk to Ushijima and isn't put off at all by his stoicness, and Ushijima proves with Tendou that he's completely able to have a normal conversation, he's just a reserved guy and nobody else tries to have that back and forth with him.

  • @paperbackwriter1111
    @paperbackwriter1111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +304

Just to add to the choir: the artstyle in season 4 may be less detailed, since it‘s a different animation staff and in comparison to season 3 the animation also isn‘t quite as strong, because it is a higher episode count, but the first half of season 4 actually looks very good. It‘s the latter half that suffered a bit in quality due to the global pandemic, with some episodes being outsourced to cheaper teams with no experience drawing Haikyuu and little time both for them to get used to it and animation supervisors to correct the off-model art. Animation is also a little limited in the latter half. But it still does a good job telling one hell of a story.
Little addition: the OVAs showing Nekoma‘s and Fukurodani‘s qualifying matches are a showcase for the strengths of the new artstyle.

This is easily my favorite episode of the entire series.
Let's just marvel at the final rally sequences. It is so good that it deserves multiple viewings to truly appreciate.
The "dream" sequence where Ushijima is crushing Tsukki and Hinata tells so much about the whole season/game. It's an interpretation between the contrasting philosophies of the two teams - forming a team around a strong player vs the whole team becoming stronger as a unit.
That Ushijima has Tsukki and Hinata pinned down is also symbolic of Tsukki and Hinata's battle against Ushijima. Tsukki has been setting up this 3-person line block for the whole set, Ushijima walks right into it and yet still(!!!) Ushijima manages to get a powerful hit past Kurasuno's blockers. Hinata is of course struggling to be recognized by Ushijima by beating him - but legs are giving out, he's gotten stuffed, got six-packed. They've basically thrown everything they've had at Ushijima and still Ushijima pushes through..."So cool..." as Hinata said. And then the interlacing of Daichi, Asahi and Tanaka picking up the balls as they "lift" Ushijima off of Tsukki and Hinata. They all see the monstrous challenge that Ushijima presents and they are all fighting against the pressure that Ushijima brings.
Notice how Kageyama is not part of the "dream" sequence since the only person that intimidates Kageyama is Oikawa. It is also Kageyama who foresaw the possibility of the cross, switched with Hinata as soon as Hinata served and was in perfect position to be able to dig Ushijima's spike. It can also be argued that Kageyama is already a monster player like Ushijima and so of course, he does not feel the same pressure as the other Kurasuno players.
However, as all of Kurasuno is going into the air, with the camera 360* panning around the synchronized attack, Hinata sends the last hit. There is a "murder of crows" comprised of 6 individuals, a complete team, flying against the lone eagle. So while Kageyama may be in a class of his own he is very much a part of the team.
Just a beautiful sequence with great imagery and exquisite attention to detail.

I have not seen a lot of comments around this point, but people usually say that the Shiratorizawa's coach did not even appreciate his team's effort. But the coach actually shows his appreciation for his team's effort. This is actually highlighted in the fact that in probably the eight or the ninth episode he tells his team that if they perform poorly he will make them run all the way to school from the city gymnasium. Even Tendo confirms that they had to do that one time when he was a first year. But here, after the match, he tells them to board the bus once the prize ceremony is over. Although not vocal, Shiratorizawa's coach hints that his team's effort was valiant and they fought hard till the end to win the match.
I love Washijou Sensai's character development as the series unfolds.
A lot of his resentment also stems from the fact that when he was young, there was no libero position in volleyball. The position was first introduced in 1998 at the international stage. So at an early stage he must have repeatedly faced the harsh reality that tall and strong players will always be given the chance over shorter players which has moulded his archaic view of volleyball.

21:42 opinions may vary with this, but what I gathered from the earlier episodes this season (Shiratorizawa flashbacks, general dialogue between the players) is that Ushijima and Tendou are extremely close friends - maybe even best buds like Tendou suggests here. Even in Karasuno itself not all members got covered like we know enough to make an impact. Almost like a precision strike where it matters i.e. 4 seasons in and we still don't know about Takeda sensei's flashback story but that's because it's not necessary, you get the point

Really appreciate that Coach Donny understands Tendou and Ushijima's characters, as well as their relationship with each other! Tendou is really just a goofy and empathetic person who was shown to be an outcast as a kid. I can imagine Ushijima also feels like an outcast himself, from being kind of shunned as a kid for being left handed, to not being approachable because of his personality. But sweet ol' Tendou doesn't care at all :') they're definitely one of my favorite pairs in Haikyuu!

I think the most interesting thing about Ushijima is that he doesn’t actively do anything to other people to make them not want to talk to him. He’s a bit direct and to the point, but that’s about it. His physical presence intimidates people more than what he actively does. People assuming he’s this intimidating guy and don’t try to really engage with him out if their own assumptions. Tendo like you said, either doesn’t acknowledge that presence or ignores it and decides to engage him like any peer would. I think this is what leads to their unusual friendship.

It was until this time that I realized that, even when he wasn't on the court, his instincts still kicked in, he knew where the ball was going to go and who should jump to stop it, but in the last play Hinata blended in so well that he couldn't do it, and just managed to mumble "shit!" before it was over. So yeah, after many years, after watching the show a couple of times and god knows how many reactions I still discovered something new.

      tl;dr
this is why i get mudery when people don't agree that Hinata is the best player in all of Haikyuu, period.
Hinata went from ep 1 to who he is rn in only 6 months. Kageyama had been training since he was 7.
      6 months to 9 years.
*I'm an avid Iranian-American VB fan and have seen FIVB irl, Iran vs Poland and Iran vs Russia, and Russia vs US in 2019 in Chicago. it's nuts. absolutely nuts. seeing Iran's setter, Marouf's sets in real-time and irl is surreal. along with Brazil's Rezende, Marouf's top 5 setters in the world.
      uber long explanation:
up to the 1st ep, he'd never been in a team, let alone official matches (not counting the one vs Kageyama). he'd never had any kind of training beyond the odd practices we the neighborhood, and what lil he did have was due to the mechanics of VB, via utilizing athletes from other sports.
he has no idea how to play the 4D chess that's VB. he's never had a setter and he's never been analyzed and developed.
from the minute he opens his eyes he's inherently at a disadvantage. his position and skill level dictate his being underestimated, regardless of his existing talents and his drive and labor. he has to work from a disadvantage, especially not being a libero and having bad receives. yet, he functions high enough that other people, with a variety of skills/specialty/experience compete against him specifically, knowingly or not.
if he'd trained with even the fraction of resources and time that Kageyama or Oikawa had they'd never reach his level in highs chool.
especially if you know what happens in the manga you'd get why he's the most skilled even tho he has v lil training rn.
he's so unique and capable that he is utilized and earns his keep from the v beginning, no matter how chaotic he is.
he's so invaluable that Ukai devotes the Nekoma practice match to essentially develop Hinata.
he went from literally just being agile and athletic to being able to be a v effective MB, a spiker, a pseudo libero and 'The Best Decoy'.
most of Haikyuu kids are not athletic necessarily. as coach has said before, while jogging is good it's not great for VB, which means that they don't run for endurance. Hinata bikes for endurance. that combined with his stamina and the fact that he had the making of a gymnast, his athletic prowess make him a consistent player, cz no matter what he does he only improves. Noya does crazy moves too but hs trains for those. Hinata consistently pull put moves that are hard to do without training for them with minimal bodily harm and with a reasonable amount of ctrl.
he's been consistent enough that its used to show his growth and not just lucky opportunities.
there's a reason that no one in 4 seasons has pulled moves like Hinata. yeah the liberos do wild rolls and dives, and the setters contort and bend, and the spikers reach and MB slide. but none of them parkours off the wall, or repeatedly receives balls to the face that count for points or save the rally. the sheer amount of running he does sets him apart from every single player that we've seen.
he's so emotionally intelligent that he creates opportunities for his teammates to become better themselves without any benefit to him. without Kuroo and Bokuto Tsukishima wouldn't be able to do sh*t. if Hinata was sh*tty to Kenma Kuroo wouldn't be exhibiting good sportsmanship. if he didn't put up w Kageyama's crap, while actually making him grow (intentionally or not) Kageyama wouldn't be as accomplished as he is rn. just the trust that Hinata bas in him is a v powerful factor, let alone the fact that he's never intentionally let down anyone, especially Kags.
he wants to compete against the best which makes his personal ethos better and stronger than anyone else on the show by magnitudes. like there is no one on Hinata's level in Haikyuu.
Oikawa, Atsumu, Kageyama, and Ushijima want to compete and win. they believe they're the best and they want to prove it by defeating who they consider a worthy rival individually.
you don't need to tell Hinata what Kags g'pa told him about there's always someone who's better than you. that's not bis mode of operation. he wants to be better and the only way he can be is using a metric, and in VB the metric is other players and winning matches. Hinata would play VB even if there wasn't any winning in it. even if it was useless he'd still play and he'd play it to the best of his ability because to him the person on the other side of the net is important. he respects being on the court and never wants to leave. and since everyone keeps wanting to kick him out or not let him, he becomes even more focused and understands that there's dignity to stand on the court. it'd be belittling to insult others by only respecting the merits instead of it as a whole. there's nothing casual about VB for him cz he's always at a disadvantage and every time he's confronted with VB categorically he has to prove himself before he gets to everyone else's level of respect.

I anime, saying "I'll defeat you next time" means you have acknowledged them as true rivals, and so Ushijima saying that to Kageyama and Hinata was pretty much him accepting them as equals. In the same way "I won't lose" being said to a rival ahead of a game is likewise a mark of respect, in that you're saying you respect this person so much, that defeating them is a worthwhile goal in itself.

One thing you might not have noticed is the Shiratorizawa coach reflecting on Hinata and thinking about his height in comparison, and how he had given up because of it. How he might have been able to overcome it in another life. Also draws a direct correlation between how he has picked his players for his team to be only tall and strong. And how Hinata stands at opposition to how he has viewed volleyball his entire life. How he was discouraged in his youth for playing because of how short he was.

Hello coach. I would like to point out 6:32 that I think that the only reason Tsukishima was able to come up with this for the last moments of the game was because he was injured. While he was getting his fingers taken care of he was only thinking about the game, and since he realized that by the time he got back they would either have already lost or they would have been fighting at the deuce, he probably thought of taking advantage of his original strategy and came up with his new strategy. Coming up with this before the game on a whim would be plot armory (or fantasy-like as you describe it) but I don't think that was the case here. It is cool to see how realistic this show can be through and through.

But Haikyuu never missed out on this one too...
if you remember, the straight hit Hinata took to his face because they couldn't complete their straight block, IF YOU REWIND A BIT YOU CAN SEE TSUKISHIMA SHOUTING "STRAIGHT" at 05:04 ... meaning they not just intended to block straight for the last one that we saw but they did try to block straight for this one too thinking this might be the last rally.. "THE PLAN WAS TO DO A 3-MAN BLOCK FOR STRAIGHT AT THE LAST POINT" ... But THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO COMPLETE IT IN TIME...
That is why at 13:48 Asahi apologizes to Hinata saying they were not able to block in time... and Kageyama says that still they narrowed it enough for Hinata to be able to receive...
They only showed the scene of conversation between Tsukishima and others during last rally/block because IT HOLDS SURPRISE AND SUSPENSE UNTIL THE LAST MOMENT... If they show the scene tsukki explaining the plan during the first rally, it would not be that effective because they could not block it completely...

I see tendo as one of the most mature characters, he always knew what he wanted and where he was going, he didnt seem to have any regret with his high school career being over. His jokes and joker personality are just one layer, clearly he has a gift to read people, he sees more than most people do. That's probably the secret of his guess blocking.
The way he is made him one of my favorite things to come out of shoratorizawa, in a team that was supposed to be Ushiwaka's solo act, he got his fair share of spotlight for being so unique.
A person who can truly get into people's minds can be scary to some (aka his bullying during middle school) but also a good friend, probably the best for such a straight to the point person like Ushiwaka.

Make sure to watch the Land vs Air OVAs showing Nekoma and Fukurodani at the qualifiers and the extra post-match scene from the movie before season 4

Karasuno vs Shiratorizawa, an absolutely godly culmination of everything leading up to this point and undoubtedly one of the greatest seasons of anime ever produced. Every time I watch it I gain a deeper appreciation for teamwork, competition, and just how much of a legend the creator Haruichi Furudate-sensei is.

I remember your first haikyuu reaction getting recommended to me when it came out and i loved it so much because you have so much knowledge and insight about everything in the show and you're just so much calmer and nicer than most other youtubers. But i was sure that you'd probably lose interest or just stop putting out the videos at some point because they're are obviously a lot work for you. But now here we are over 1 year later and you still put out these videos on a regular basis. I just want to say thank you for everything. Haikyuu and especially these videos of yours made me actually start volleyball a couple months ago and i am happier than ever. i also have my first tournament tomorrow and i can't wait.
    Again, thank you Coach 💜

Coach when they closed in on Ushijima's straight, Tsuuki had told them that plan just before that rally started so imo it's not too impossible for them to have planned and thought of it :) If it was a plan since the very start of the game then it would definitely have been unrealistic lol

I think Tsuuki also mentioned that strategy because he was aware that Nishinoya wasn’t going to be there to dig the ball up. Because this is the one rotation that Nishinoya doesn’t rotate in, it’s their strongest attacking rotation but wekeast receiving rotation and potentially strongest blocking rotation. I honestly think Tsuuki was waiting for this specific rotation when he had the play in mind.

Not a volleyball player, but a basketball player here. I actually experienced Coach Washijo's (eyebrow guy) old school coaching style myself when I was a sophomore in high school where we had to run 100 lines/suicides for losing a game.
During my junior varsity league, I remember there was one specific game where my team kept missing almost all our free throws and lost the game. And I remember my coach saying that for every free throw we'd miss we'd run 5 lines/suicides for practice the next day. We totaled in 50 liners and since we lost the game, my coach added fifty more.
So the next day at practice all we did was run 100 suicides nonstop (no breaks, if you threw up, too bad keep going) until we learned our lesson and corrected our mistakes. It was horrible, we didn't even practice free throws or have a conversation about it how to improve. The worst part was that the day after that practice, we had another game. So just as you said, we couldn't play to our fullest potential, we were still mentally and physically drained from our loss and the practice. It wasn't the worst practice I've ever had, but it was the hardest.

The S4, is coming, yoooooo, the reason I love S4 so much even tho it downgraded by a bit is because I read the manga before the S4, and yo, Haikyuu is one of those anime/manga or any kind of story that exhilarates the hell out of me(like the emotions I felt there are enough for me to forget the animation style, well, I actually like the style, except when they blocking)

People keep saying this, but I love S4's artstyle. It sure is different, but the quality of the animation itself is just as great to me.
S4 pt.2 is another story because of outsourced episodes

S4 was amazing! The characters feel even more dynamic and close to their manga counterparts. The animation was iffy in an episode or two (thanks to COVID) but the overall quality was still much better than most seasonal anime of that year.

@@pandyssianrat to me it felt off whenever they are jumping (unless the jump is in an intense moment and the animators go crazy), other than that it's all good, and it doesn't really matter coz ofy love for the show

For season 4, there are still many scenes that cannot be missed out, it is quite sad that many scenes are not well done but the important scenes are all done pretty good (this happens a lot in many studios where they try to save cost for the epic scene). Really cant wait to see Coach to react to those epic moments in season 4!!! LETS GOO.

I was pretty mad at S4-2's eps2 and 3 because they are the worst animated but they still had all that emotional power that made me tear up. I felt a bit scammed. I wish we could replace them with the bluray fixed versions when they come out but most people will stick to the TV versions because those are the ones in crunchy.
