The All Japan Youth Camp is only meant for first and second years, so players like Ushiwaka and Bokuto aren’t in there because they’re both third years. Though it’s stated that Ushiwaka was selected before in his earlier years and it makes sense if Bokuto was selected as well since he’s a Top 5 ace and always went to nationals.

"The Japan Team crumbles before height and strength"
-Asians are known to be short and small compared to other parts of the world
-So when they say Japan crumbles it means Japan loses against other teams that have both height and power which is ironically what Coach Dr Wily's motto is for Shiratorizawa

About the -kun at the end of names:
Japanese has an honorific system. You add one to the end of peoples’ names depending on their relationship with you
-san: basic honorific. Indicates formality and respect
-kun: for friends, family members and in a work setting, those lower in position (usually for males)
-Chan: for people you are very close with, such as your couple or a very close friend, or for small children.
-sama: an extreme degree of formality. Used to refer to deities or kings.

Couple of things you missed coach.
1st: Doctor Wiley said Hinata is allowed to stay as long as he's fine with just being a ball boy. (so he's technically not allowed to participate).
2nd: When Kageyama walks into the Olympic training camp, they mention how the feed on the big screen TV is set up with a 6 second delay so that players can analyze their plays after doing them.
3rd: The Yellow jacket guy with the mask is from the #1 seeded school at nationals (They beat Fukurodani in the OVA). And he's one of the top 3 spikers in Japan HS volleyball along with Ushiwaka.

A little info: Season 3 (2016) and Season 4 (2020) are actually 3-4 years apart. Meaning, the anime went on a 4 years hiatus. The reason is that the anime was close on catching up from the manga, the original source of Haikyuu. When Season 3 last episode which is episode 10 was aired, the manga was just on the first part of what Season 4 will cover so there's no content to animate so they decided to let the manga release more chapters so that they could have more content to animate in the future. They released season 4 when the manga was working on its last final arc. Also, It's a 4 years hiatus so some directors and animators that handled haikyuu before have gone and are busy with some new projects that's why you'll see many big changes from the animation. Changes are also evident from the voices of these characters but not that much.. just minor ones.
4 year gap was crazy for me and I remember myself at 2017 really losing hope for Season 4 but here it is after 4 years lol. It's nice that you won't have to go through that kind of pain haha. I hope you'd enjoy Season 4, coach! So many amazing scenes and moments and so much character developments! Hope you enjoy watching again! I look forward to your remaining reactions!

Many Japanese (even grown adults!) have varying amounts of difficulty in reading kanji (the Chinese characters that are also used in Japanese writing). Kanji is a touch more challenging than the original Han Zi because each character has different meanings and ways of being pronounced so while attempting to ask for directions, Kageyama might wind up sounding completely incomprehensible. The difference is really stark, like not just intonation but a completely different pronunciation entirely.
It's common for young children and early learners of the language to receive help in the form of furigana which are like helping phonetic characters written on top of the kanji to show them how to properly pronounce the word.
There's a video somewhere on youtube where Oikawa's voice actor being clowned by another Haikyuu voice actor (his character hasn't debuted in this episode!) while trying to read a fan letter with lots of (basic!) kanji. he gets all the pronunciations wrong hahahaha

Canadian teacher living in Japan here!
Honorifics in Japan : teachers usually add -kun after the boys' last name and -chan after the girls' last name. They can also add -san to either boys or girls last name. It is a mark of respect in Japan, that everyone follows pretty strictly.
You would usually add -san to everyone's last name when talking to or about them (or -sensei for teachers and doctors, like they do for Takeda), but for young boys and girls, kun and chan are pretty common.
To not use an honorific is called yobisute and is an honorific in itself and means proximity. Even more so if you use the first name. Doing so without being a close friend is considered rude.
If you listen carefully, Hinata refers to the older players with the -san honorific, but with the other 1st years he uses the -kun honorific.

Also : Kanji is one of the three "alphabets" used by Japanese people, and uses Chinese symbols. It contains thousands of symbols, so even Senior Hogh School students don't know the readings for all of them.
Furigana is when you include the pronunciation of a kanji above it.
Since Kageyama is going to a place he doesn't know, he will most likely not know his way if the Kanjis for the train station or roads are complex.

If you're curious about the furigana thing:
The Japanese writing system is made up of a 46 character alphabet (hiragana) and also an identical alphabet (katakana) for borrowed foreign words. These are the first 2 systems that kids learn.
Then there are 10,000s of symbolic characters (Kanji) that kids learn after, but starting very young. For people who can't read the Kanji, they will usually write the hiragana directly beside the Kanji. This is called furigana, which is a reading aid paired with Kanji making it easier to read. You will usually see this in books, manga and textbooks for kids.
Ennoshita was just worried that Kageyama wouldn't be able to read the Kanji for the stations and streets in Tokyo, so he was wondering if Takeda sensei included furigana for the directions so that Kageyama could read it. It further illustrates Kageyama's lack of average reading ability since he's hardcore focused on Volleyball.

For those wondering what the joke is regarding Kageyama reading Takeda's instructions to get to his youth camp: Takeda-sensei wrote the instructions in proper Kanji. The team is joking that they hoped that he included furigana for Kayeyama. Furigana are more simple characters that sometime written in smaller font over complex kanji. They are reading and pronunciation aids incase people aren't familiar with that kanji. In most cases, it's for children. The joke here is that while Kageyama is a volleyball genius, he still reads like a child academically. True to form, Kageyama gets lost because he can't read the instructions and it takes him a while to reach the correct location.

  • @t3cchan
    @t3cchan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

In Japanese, there are thousands of Kanji, so if someone is not academically inclined (like kageyama), they might not be able to read a lot of them. Furigana refers to the practice of writing out the phonetic pronounciation beside the kanji, so that even an elementary schooler can read it.

so coach you might have misunderstood what shiratorizava's coach meant my ball boy... ball boys are the helpers that hand out water/drinks and pick up balls and do other odd jobs to help out the player's practices. so when he said "it's not like I care if we have another ball boy around" the coach meant that Hinata cant participate in practice but can only be there as a helper

I'll use this comment to remind you of some of 1st years in the Miyagi youth camp, as you might have forgot them due to the high amount of characters in the series.
1- Goshiki : The bowel cut guy who was the only 1st year in the starting roster in the Shiratorizawa match
2- Hyakuzawa: The inexperienced 2 meters guy who Karasuno beat in the Miyagi qualifiers.
3- Kindaichi: The turnip head MB guy from Aoba Johsai. he appeared in s1e1 and was in Kageyama's middle school team, and he was on bad terms with Kageyama when they graduated middle school).
4- Kunimi: An outside hitter for Aoba Johsai. He played in the first match which Karasuno lost but was subbed out for Mad dog in the second match. He also appeared in s1e1 and was in Kageyama's middle school team, and he wasn't on the best terms with Kageyama when they graduated middle school as well).
5- Koganegawa: The giant setter from Date Tech. He wasn't in the starting team during Date's last match against Karasuno in the Inter-High where Karasuno prevailed, but he appeared in the spring tournament that followed and was in the starting roster during the episode where Aoba Johsai played againt Date Tech. He is the tallest setter among the Miyagi prefecture teams that we have seen so far, but just like Lev, he is pretty inexperienced and raw.
Those are the most relavent 1st years to remember for the Miyagi prefecture youth camp (besides Tsuki and Hinata), and it's important to note that except for Koganegawa, they have all lost to Karasuno and Hinata (you can see them getting competitive and fired up when they saw that Hinata infiltrated the camp).

The coach in grey (that vouch for Hinata) is the coach from Jozenji (the hyper team that needed to be scolded by their female manager in season 2). He used to be a student at Shiratorizawa. It's actually super interesting how his wild and free team is so opposite of Shiratorizawa which is rigid in it's systems.

I really think you'll enjoy the deeper parts of the writing this season but I love your appreciate for this season's animation as well. People really dig on it because when its low quality its fairly noticeable but honestly its got the best animated scenes out of the whole series. “The Japan Team always crumbles before height and strength” is a quote that the Olympic Coach is refuting, because he says that that phrase is “outdated now”. There’s a stereotype that Japanese / East Asian volleyball teams are small/weak and therefore are prone to losing against taller/stronger people from other countries, but Hibarida (the coach) is declaring that, contrary to popular belief, that is not a true statement, because strength and height are not the only determiners for victory.

23:15 Coach, in Japan they don't start learning right away the Kanji's because there're too many. They start and primary school with hiragana (the basic syllabary, which is a set of symbols that represent syllabs, kind of like in the latin alphabet) and from then they learn Kanji little by little. Before university they should know around 2500 Kanjis (in total I think there're around 7000).
Sometimes when a Kanji has more than one way of reading they add at the top "furiganas" (which in fact are small hiraganas) so it's possible to know how to read that particular kanji. In this scene they worry about Kageyama because everyone knows he's not a good student, therefore they're not sure he'll be able to read the Kanjis written by the teacher; actually if you rewind at the moment of Kageyama arriving to Tokyo, you can see that he's struggling to read the paper xD.

The hilarious part was that Hinata was willing to go all the way to Tokyo but didn't so he wouldn't get arrested. Another thing to note is that doing things improperly, being rude, inconveniencing others is extremely frowned upon. I'm no expert in Japanese culture though. Hinata crashes the camp so they have to stop everything to deal with it. He didn't think about how his actions affect others' organized program and time. The outcome ended up being okay, but he didn't tell the Karasuno coaches either. So he kinda ditched practice too, in a way. It was good for him to be motivated but they are scolding his inconsideration this time

This is about the part where they talk about the furigana for the kanji. in pervious episodes we know that Kageyama and Hinata are not good at studying. For Japanese kanji isn’t something everyone can read and since Kageyama isn’t good at studying he isn’t good in kanji either which means he might not be able to read the detailed direction that he was given. When they said if he included furigana for the kanji, furigana shows how to read the kanji so that anyone that knows the basics in Japanese such as hiragana and katakana can read the kanji. This makes it so that Kageyama can read the kanji but Takeda sensei didn’t include this which is why he had a hard time finding his way.

There are a small couple of episodes later this season that get commissioned out for a third party studio to animate and those are definitely lower quality animation. But the actual animation in this season is just fine. It's the same high standard as seasons 1 and 2. The design style choice however is deliberately different, and that change is what many people do not like. There was a staffing change and shuffle. The director changed but many people who worked on the past seasons returned to do this season...just in different roles.

About furigana at 22:46. This is basically having the pronunciation written in the Japanese alphabet over each kanji (Chinese characters used in the Japanese written language). Kageyama isn't the brightest academically, but there's more to it. This is especially important because city and station names will not necessarily be obvious (they're just a string of kanji that may not have a specific meaning). In addition, kanji can have kun-yomi (Japanese pronunciation) and on-yomi ("Chinese" pronunciation, more accurately I'd say Chinese origin over 1.5 millenia ago so some ancient Chinese dialect that has then evolved in Japan.) For names, which have multiple kanji characters, it's more likely to be using on-yomi (which one might know less well) and worse, might not be guaranteed to be all on-yomi. This shouldn't matter if looking at a map with writing, but if listening to announcements by the train conductor, could be an issue.

23:06 Japanese has multiple writing systems: Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. Kanji consists of Chinese characters and is the hardest to read and write, as it has more specific characters and there's so many of them most people don't even know them all. Because of this there's Furigana, which are simpler, alternate characters written above or under the Kanji ones to help people understand it better. If you noticed, when Kageyama was reading the directions in the scene before, he was struggling to read some of it because it didn't have the Furigana.

    1) Hinata was only allowed on the training as a ball boy / ball picker. Washijo sensei also told him if he doesnt want to be a ball picker, he can go home. And then Hinata just loudly proclaim to the team that he is a ball picker, which earned a giggle from one of the coach
    2) The speech given by the All-Japan's coach basically meant that 'Japan crumbling before strength and height' is an outdated phrase - they will triumph despite their limitations in height and strength
    3) Kageyama had difficulty reaching the training site because he mis-read the directions, which is written in purely kanji

#3 is a bit wrong. It's usually difficult to write a complete sentence in Japanese "purely" in kanji. If you look at the memo, you'd see it's a mix of kanjis & hiraganas. I wholeheartedly agree with #1 & 2.

23:05 Kanji (Characters borrowed from the Chinese language) can be difficult to memorize and Kageyama... slacks off in his academics, so Ennoshita is asking if Takeda-sensei included Furigana (Basically, the phonetics of the Kanji that are used so kids who don't know the kanji can still read and understand from the knowledge they have through listening and speaking Japanese) so Kageyama can read. But Takeda-sensei didn't include Furigana assuming that Kageyama knew those few Kanji (which are generally supposed to be known by the high school level), and comically...or not so comically...Kageyama doesn't.

@@hopewelch9421 Yeah! If you see the manga in Japanese, you'll see Furigana (which are actually Hiragana characters, as you said) since shonen manga are targetted to teenagers and they might not have enough knowledge of Kanji to read it entirely. It's never really hit me but it's one thing with Kageyama who has always put in 110% into volleyball being invited to Youth Camp & another with Tsukishima being invited straight away after trying for the first time. Doesn't make Tsukishima less valid, but if i was Hinata who always tries my best & then someone who is just naturally more gifted than me physically getting to go straight in, I'd be so frustrated.

Coach Washijo is savage yes. But what he said is basically true.
Hinata for now is quite dependent with Kageyama's skills. Meaning he has to learn not only to be dependent to a single player, but also to learn to depend on his own skill to play with different people and different position.

Hi Coach Donny, I’m glad to see you’re enjoying this episode and the art style change isn’t glaring to you! Your interpretation (the 29:12 time stamp) of Coach Washijo telling Hinata that he has no worth in him without Kageyama isn’t exactly right. It’s not that he expects him to thrive in with other setters in the mock camp, but it’s Hinata as a whole that lacks the skills in general. I’d want to say think back to the very first Karasuno vs Nekoma match where the Nekoma coaches were discussing how Kageyama and Hinata are basically combining each other’s strengths when playing. They even made an analogy after realizing it’s not a matter of “addition” for their strengths, but more like they’re “multiplying” their strengths together! It’s that image where Kageyama is holding a rocket launcher with a picture of Hinata on it. Back to the very straight point Coach Washijo was making, once Kageyama isn’t there to multiply, or enhance, Hinata’s strength, then what’s left? In the eyes of Coach Washijo, it’s just a “short player” who is severely lacking in any worth. Hopefully you can see this comment to see how this season will show how Hinata develops on his own when playing volleyball!

I don't see how your explanation differs from Coach's. You're saying Hinata lacks the skills to work with setters that aren't Kageyama. Coach said that it's because Hinata needs to learn how to work with setters that aren't Kageyama.
He wasn't explicit on what Hinata needs to improve on, but he's spot on interpreting what it meant.

    • @jasonle2204
      @jasonle2204 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I wasn't trying to say Hinata is unable to work with setters that aren't Kageyama, if it did sound like that, then my bad there!
For the most part, I just thought Coach Donny interpreted that scene as "if he can work with another setter, then Hinata should be good". The following episode will definitely explore more on what Hinata needs to work on for sure.

    • @lily-_-
      @lily-_- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@jasonle2204 I understand that. I mean that I think Coach's interpretation was correct. The reason Hinata is unable to shine with other setters is because he lacks perceptiveness and technical skill, and Kageyama has been covering for all his weakness by adjusting his own game. For Hinata to be as good with anyone just as he is with Kageyama, he needs to round out his game beyond just running around a lot and jumping high.

This season was also made 3 Years (January 2020) after season 3 (December 2016) which is why it's so different. The comic this show is based on was wrapping up and the comic and this season were planned to finish just in time for the Tokyo Olympics but the pandemic changed plans.

Hinata loses the jump by just a hair, but considering how much shorter he is than Kageyama, that's hardly a loss. If you're about 25cm shorter than someone and your jump is only 4cm lower than theirs, that's definitely some impressive air.

    Been waiting for this 💥💥
So yes, for me, the art this season is better, it's actually really beautiful and for example, the body proportions are better, and it actually shows the guys have muscles haha in previous seasons they all looked super skinny (specially buff boy Bokuto)
The thing for me this season is the animation direction, the fluidity of the movements when they're playing isn't the same, it's fluid, but the transitions from one scene to another is a little slower, like when they're going for a spike, they last a bit more in the air, as if trying to build tension? But instead (for me) it's frustrating. After rewatching the season I realized the animation isn't that bad, taking out the outsourced episodes in the second half

And it makes sense, since one of the most important roles that changed between seasons were the Director and Chief Animation Director
The character design and general illustration is fantastic, but those at the highest level, whose job it is to tie it all together, were a bit less experienced
Despite that I think season 4 gets a harsher rap than it deserves. There's spotty moments but overall it is far from "bad", which makes me sad when I see people give it such a blanket "sucks"
