You do realize that this tech has been around for a LONG time, right? And he didn't create it from scratch. He got it from a library. I kept thinking, "Why does it take this kid to get this done?". Seriously, all it took really was someone recognizing that there has to be a better way. That is a rather small hurdle if you really think about it. Once you are past that hurdle then it is just a matter of having the initiative to research it and build it. So, yes, I think this kid has tons of initiative. However, I also think that it shouldn't take your village dying to create this kind of initiative. And it sure as heck shouldn't have been a kid that first got this initiative.

Just saw this film on Netflix after being a huge fan of William since I first retweeted a story about him years ago. He astounded me then - but I didn't know the struggle he endured just to get his windmill running and at so young an age. I'm SO glad his story has been brought to the screen. What a treat for all of us to see and learn.
This was an EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT film - 20 cuts above the main. From beginning to end - acting, directing, cinematography, but most especially - the story. The screenwriting was phenomenal - how expertly they packed a riveting story into two hours without lagging, without losing interest - EVERYTHING about this film was intelligent, inspiring, wholesome, life-affirming - if it were playing at a high end movie theater i would gladly have paid top dollar to see it. I cannot say enough good about it - except now I want to buy the DVD. And that kid - Maxwell Simba - what an outstanding actor! Watching this made you fall in love with the whole family and the others as well, and you find you want only the very best of the very best for them. But especially for William. This film is a real jewel. Please see it if you want to restore your faith in man. A must see.
Did I mention that I LOVED this film? Finally - in the caldron of Hollywood dross, a cinematic diamond! Well done - the lot of you! Well done!

They introduce the problem (the drought) and then also introduce the solution (the pump, and wind turbine, and the kid learning about energy) within the trailer and then literally show the water showing up at the end. I know there was no water in the frame but it was being implied that the water pump worked... Just feels like I have already seen the movie now.

@@eriks.pratama54 Sure, personally my favorite park at the peak the view looking out from the peak, the big climax after a long journey which they took away by showing everything including the ending. But again, they showed the whole "trip" they showed the whole arc of the kid drawing the lines from pump>talking to teacher about generating electricity on a small scale> Reading the book with wind turbines>and then cutting to the desert with the "dust devil">then laying all the parts out for the turbine> then building it and putting the tower up. And they did this too with the father son relationship, and how people are reacting to the food shortage. imo*

Trust me, I'm a big fan of Chiwetel Ejiofor and the fact that African stories are getting the light of day now in Hollywood. But I'm getting sick and tired at the type of stories Hollywood is continuing to make about Africa. Are there parts of the continent that are famine struck? Yes. But what about the other parts that are experiencing enormous prosperity and economic growth?
Not everyone in Africa is dying of hunger and starvation. Some countries, such as Tanzania, had a record 200 new dollar millionaires last year! And I'm pretty sure these people aren't carrying balls of hay across the Sahara in dusty slippers.
Now I'm not saying that there's no poverty in Africa. But where are the stories about the wealth? The cities? The dollar millionaires and billionaires? The GROWTH??
A majority of the international viewing audience's perception of reality is actually shaped by watching movies such as these, and that's why some people still think Africa is a country, and we're busy making friends with lions, living on top of trees and seeking counsel from wise baboons (this only happens after a drink or 9).
So big up to all the people involved in this production and to all the hard work they put in behind the scenes to making it possible. But I think it's about time that filmmakers in the west (or even here for that matter) tell the stories of our wealth. That the perception of Africa is changed from poverty stricken, to glorious strides in the way of economic prosperity.
Now you'll excuse me, it's bath time for my 5 year old pet lion.
    UPDATE
    --------------
After watching the movie, here are a few of my honest sentiments about it:
    a. It certainly isn't about abject poverty. And I honestly don't know how the filmmakers would have stuffed in all the issues they've covered in the film IN the trailer. I mean, it's such a deeply rooted, African film covering true socio-political/economic themes that still plague a lot of African countries. The issue here isn't how poor the community is, but how ingenuity can rise in the face of total despair (which in this case was the result of poor foresight and greed). And I especially loved how the filmmakers didn't focus on the 'poor' state of living that the characters were dealing with due to the conditions they faced, but on the journey to finding the solution they sought.
    b. Chiwetel handles this material like such a pro, you can't even tell it's his directorial debut. His eye for detail, subtle detail. And not to mention he learned to speak the local dialect, which he uses for a large majority of the scenes in the film. My respect to him as a thespian was pretty much cemented after his dumbfounding performance in 12 Years a Slave. But now as a director? I'm truly excited to see where this road takes him.
    c. This was a beautifully done film that I not only believe every African filmmaker should watch, but hope that it'll give light to the VAST sea of stories that we have as a people - and not only from 'true story' literature. From the comments I've read following my previous post, a nice number of you shared some amazing ideas that would actually look pretty damn good on screen. I guess it's up to us now to tell them.
PS: Thank you to each one of you who took the time to comment and share your ideas. Don't be surprised when you see some of them premiering in a theater near you ;)

No one wants a story about the success of a country, it doesnt have pain, hence no drama.
If someone watched a movie about the ME, they will watch about the wars in Lebanon and Iraq, not about the success of UAE and Qatar.
If u watch a movie about Europe, u might be interested in it's WW2 Era, not in its post war Era, where it had economic success

But there are a lot of talented Malawian actors who would have taken atleast ONE lead role, and speak decent Chichewa.
Secondly, the generic English accent for ALL African nations is offensive. That is not how Malawians sound when speaking English.

Also so proud to be African :) Poverty is part of the continent, but survival and prosperity are too.
The enemy in this hero story are the worldbank (ny) etc, that speculate on corn knowing that the victims won´t be alive to sue.
And it is a story of 2001, the corps that are given to by governments aren't fertile, so you cannot plant them only eat them. Because American and Chinese scientist genetically modified it and most other corn is prohibited true patent letters so that they can speculate with it knowing they will profit.

A great movie is not one that shows fun, glamour, conspiracy, action etc.. But is one that is capable enough to transform our knowledge for a better outcome and well being...
The boy Who Harnessed The Wind is one of such best movies

3 FACTS: 1. Could be due to my depression but i got water in my eyes from like 45secs into the trailer. So, think I'll hold off til life gets better b4 I stream this one.
    2. Netflix is on a tear tho for quality films w/ centralized black characters👏👏🔥🔥👍👍
    3. Chiwetel Ejiofor is a monnnnnnster.

Can't speak on your depression ( although hope you get help though if you're serious because depression is no light matter) but Netflix is putting out great original material in general. But as a black american I definitely agree to your point on its quality black content.

Chiwetel is a great actor. Red Belt forced it's way into my personal top 10 movies. Versatile actor.
