What's in the LAST suitcase? My Mum's QUILT TOPS!

  • This is the last of the suitcases, two of them, but all the same contents. My Mum was a prolific quilter, with well over 200 quilts to her name, given to family, friends, charities .... It was inevitable that there would be a few unfinished quilt tops after she died. I have been thinking about them for the last three years!
    Their time has come!
    I hope you enjoy seeing them. In a few weeks time I will take them to Cath here

    My mother passed away in 2007. I’m still finishing some of the work she started. I asked her once why not finish a project before starting another. Her reply was if I don’t finish them, you will. My brother and sister has benefited along with my boys and their cousins. It has all been a labor of love, for all the things she taught me.

    what a wonderful connection to your mum, sad, but joyful at the same time. My mum made a quilt for me when I was a toddler, she passed away when I was 14 & the quilt is one of the few things I still have. I landed up teaching myself to quilt last year so I could repair it and now have made several quilts for friends and have even set up a little online store. All thanks to my mum's quilt.

    Kate, thank you for sharing all of your mother’s treasure’s quilts. I always love seeing beautiful handwork of quilts made long ago by someone we love. You’re very blessed to have some that your mother made. Mother’s know in their hearts that one of her kids will finish them and share them with their siblings. And as you’re doing the stitching but she didn’t get to you will have a special connection with her as you think about her as you were growing up watching her doing her special little things. Those are called happy memories. Enjoy them all.

    Oh, Kate. What a beautiful legacy your mum left you. I'm a quilter, and my mom was also a quilter. I inherited her last quilt squares and fabric that she was working with when she passed away. It took me a long time to be able to touch it and work on it because I missed her so much. But, like you finally opening your red suitcases, I came to a time that I was ready. I finished her quilt by hand because that was what she was doing. That quilt stays folded across the foot of my bed now. I take it off each night and put it on a chair and put it back every morning. I love running my hands across it as I place it on the bed. It's such a tangible representation of the bond of love we had for each other and the craft of quilting that we both shared. Your quilts tops are beautiful! Thank you for sharing those lovely treasures with us. The pictures at the end of the video of your mum and you are priceless, too. Love to you, Kate.

      My own mistake, Judy. I wanted to be trifty. Had a lot of fabric over from the top so stichted 3 different panels together, a grey patterned one, a white one and a blue patterned one. There was a lot of white in the front. It was a lone star quilt. The quilt was handquilted and the white of the front seemed grey where the grey wand blue fabric shone throught the white of the front. It was horrible. Nothing to,do with a longarmer or so. The quilt was a kingsize and entirely handmade.

    What a legacy of quilt-tops, and of course finished quilts, your mama left behind. Not to mention the mentoring that’s deposited in you. My mum left suddenly 3 years ago. Healthy, happy, and busy one minute.... and off to heaven in an instant. I finished knitting a blanket she left behind for the ‘next great grand daughter’ who was born the month after she died. I’ve still got 2 other things she’s begun to knit, and one day I’ll finish them too. Had to wait till some of the hurt went away to handle them, as I was missing her so much. Now I look at the scope of her life, the 6 children she reared, the generosity of her life, and I simply rejoice that God gave me such a good mother. I know you feel the same. Many thanks for sharing.

    Dear Kate- the " pink and cream" quilt cover from your mom I think is very special in her choice of light colors and pattern❤ And the square and square is also lovely..
    Gosh...they are all nice in their own way!
    What a family of handcrafters you all are😊

    Quilting is work for the heart as well as the hands, isn’t it. These are real legacy pieces and even (or especially) the socks must mean a lot to you. It will be lovely to see all of these as ‘finished’ items, but what a lot of good ideas there are there, too xxx

    Bonnie Hunter lives near me!! I learned to quilt with my mom 13 years ago by watching Bonnie Hunter with my mom. What a gift to have of your mom’s. My mom is horrible about finishing quilts. She always said she was leaving them me to finish. Trouble is I am not the best at finishing either. I want to join in on too many quilt alongs

    What a lovely show. I lost my mom in January of 2021. She taught me how to sew when I was eight. I got into quilting, mom gave it a go too but didn’t understand why we bought fabric in a big piece, cut it up into little bits and then sewed it back into a big piece. She was a baker and a gardener and played with her 11 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren before she left us. Thanks for sharing your mum with us!

    Lovely quilts! I feel the same way about seeing my mom's handwriting, from when she was well. And, I've finished my mother-in-law's knitted throw after she passed. We carry them with us all our lives, don't we? It's nice that they can live on through us in a way.

    Hi Kate, I love how you and your mother have made quilt tops prolifically. I’ve made a few over the years too and have more in my cupboard that will be quilted one day😂
    Was wonderful watching you unfold, pin, name each of your mothers quilts left in the last suit cases.

    The 3rd quilt that you called "Pink and Cream" is a double Irish chain pattern. They're all beautiful.
    Definitely eye candy for us quilters😍

      I made the same Irish Chain lap quilt for my mom. When she passed I had it cremated with her. 💕

    • @nicolethijs5428
      @nicolethijs5428 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to disagree but this pattern is not an Irish Chain. Irish chain has no triangles in the quilt and the squares would have made a differant pattern. It was the first quilt pattern I ever made.

    • @lydia4597
      @lydia4597 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nicolethijs5428 You're absolutely right Nicole. Kate's mum didn't follow the rules of tradition in her version. Gotta love that! A single Irish chain uses a 9 patch (3 across & 3 down) for the checkerboard block. A double Irish is 5 across & 5 down. Kate's mum used 4 across & 4 down. And instead of a solid block in the corners of her solid alternating block, she used a half square triangle.
      In her book, "Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns", quilt historian, Barbara Brackman catalogs so many variations of these blocks. I think that's the beauty of quilting , you make it your own.

    I too am an avid Bonnie Hunter fan. I knew right away this was one of her designs as I made one too; pieced on telephone book pages, no less!

    My grandma didn't get to travel much,but the quits she made, and we're handed down to me, have traveled a lot. I only have three and they are fought over by my child, husband and myself, because they are so cozy. I feel like she hugs me every time I crawl under one, no matter how far from home I roam, even though I never got to know her. I love what your mom left you.

    Put that row of green in. I was probably 50 years old when I asked my mom to show me how to turn a heel. My version was a little twisty and I remarked on it. My mom said, that's all right and then showed me the heel turn , it never ceases to amaze me, and I think of my mother every time.
