- This is the new NIO EP9, both the launch of the NIO brand and the electric supercar itself from NextEV, the brainchild of Chinese businessman, William Lee. Marking a significant step into the future, I join the team during testing at Circuit Paul Ricard in France for an exclusive look behind the scenes during testing.
Boasting 1,360hp it reaches the magical 1 Megawatt of power, capable of over 300km/h and now holding the lap record for an electric vehicle at the Nurburgring Nordschleife with a time of just 7:05.
After spotting the car during testing at Bruntingthorpe, the team got in touch to invite me to join them in France during the car's outing, along with an opportunity to chat to a number of key people involved in then project including Design Director David Hilton and NextEV's Formula E drivers, Nelson Piquet Jr and Oliver Turvey.
A big thanks to those involved for inviting me along for this opportunity, it's wonderful to be able to share this exclusive look with you on the day of the brand's global premiere and launch in London.

People used to say the same stuff to Made in Japan several decades ago. By the way, Chinese also build spaceships that send people to space and get them back. They also have their own experimental space station. And they are building their own Navigation Satellite System “BeiDou”, which will be completed around 2020. Things are changing...
Alex P American and European manufacturers put out the message years ago that Japan made shit cars but that was because they were scared, Japan made reliable/cheap cars and manufactured knew they were entered than what they were offering so tried to scare buyers away.
The key difference is Japan always made good cars, 99% of the cars coming out of China are shit. So people are quite rightly cynical.

I haven't yet spent significant time with the Rimac, all in due course.

i would say faraday future has a bright future (no pun) in the hypercar market, but that company is already having really bad problems business wise before a single car has even been built.
some say the car wont see the light of day because the company is already nearly defunct before even starting production.
some are calling the business model vaporware even.
That looks to be a very interesting piece of engineering! The build quality from the video looks to be awesome and if this is anything to go by it should be a very cool brand!

For those who think this car is made by western. I hate to tell you that the electric motor, the car frame, and battery are made by Chinese company NIO which has military background. And they do have a western team which is responsible for suspension and exterior design. No matter which nationality you are, the only thing I can say is WELCOME TO THE FUTURE.

I was actually on the shoot of this car, and this is just the best of the best car, they are also manufacturing the norm cars, like your VW golfs so to speak
It's about building a brand and selling high margin cars, to fund more mainstream car, higher production cars and to wow investors of course.

I doubt it will beat the rimac.Mate Rimac is an awesome guy,probably one of the best in the electric supercar space.That guy is somewhat like Christian von Koenigsegg,hes extremely talented and know every detail right from torque vectoring in individual wheels to every single driving mode.Also not to forget he makes parts for other manufacturers(including Koenigsegg).The concept one is one amazing car.It has already beaten the 918 in a drag race which is already a very incredible feat achieved by an electric car.
Nevertheless Id rather not judge before I see it go up against the concept s and the Koenigsegg one and the chiron.

I was working at RML group when we started building this and going through all the planning. Turned out to be an amazing car.
I immediately thought of the Vulcan/Supra 2017
Styling wise, if the Ford GT, Gumpert Apollo, Toyota FT-1 concept and the Koenigsegg Agera had a love child, this would be it.

Tim, thought about getting a DSLR to record with? You could get an 11mm wide angle lense. It would fix most the issues with filming
DSLRs are horrible with focus and movement; which every single one of my videos contains.

Stabilization? No BOS sensor as far as I can tell so my footage would be all over the place. 5-axis in-body stabilization is nice but it is not as good as the BOS in a Handycam.
Shmee150 Both sides do have good and bad points. I just feel a wider angle and a better dynamic range would make these videos much better. Still, keep up the good work
You could get a DSLR to record some footage where stabilization isn´t needed, like close-ups on cars plus you can take great photos with it!

7:05 on the Nurburgring is crazy when you think about the fact that electric cars are only starting to be tested and created! Almost as fast as the 918! Can't wait to see what electric power will bring to the motorsport industry in the up coming years.
Research 4 motor independent Torque Vectoring. That is the special sauce that makes EVs like this amazing around tight corners. Its basically operating like Tank Treads in opposite direction for a split second to rotate the car body. Its too difficult to do that with 4x wheels and 1x I.C.E.

Paint is done prior to it going on the line because then it takes a few weeks to settle before you start work. It'll be on the line for a few days and then there's a lot of testing and preparation getting it to a dealer. It should be on the road just before the year end.

What do you think about electrical hypercars? Are they the future? Imo you lose the sound, which is a bummer and what, for me atleast, defines a car.
We live in a changing world, there is no question about that. The EP9 acts as a halo product ahead of the introductions of more ordinary cars coming from NIO; the mantra 'Blue Skies Coming' is all about trying to look after the world for future generations and using electric technology to do so.
You are absolutely right and hopefully projects like these can get bigger companies to also start developing electrical monsters like this one. However, the demand is the tricky question, though these cars are quite limited, so it should not be too hard to find buyers that are into extreme cars while saving the planet.
Screw saving the planet, not the point with Performance EV. They are Exhilarating and More Powerful, a lot of people like that. Also you are kind of wrong about sound. These Supercar EVs are not silent, they all have their distinct sound. NIO EP9 has a higher wine smooth whirling sound. Rimac Concept series has a Mechanical Jet Turbine sound, Tajima Rimac ERunner sounds like a cross between a Chainsaw & F1 V10. You just have not seen awesome EVs.

We can argue about design copying all day, but at the end of the day what matters is the fact that there're finally people out there who are pushing the technology and adding excitements and spice to the EVs. Having said that I'm actually a lil surprised by the lap times. It actually delivers.

hey man Tesla's look nice Model S and Model X are really good looking, Model 3 looks alright, but also think about it, Tesla makes family cars, yes they have a roadster but they dont make sports cars, Elon Musk focused on the masses. not the wealthy who can afford a $1million EV supercar. lol thanks to Elon Musk and Tesla Motors we had more exposure and records set with those vehicles to prove that EVs are more than capable of being a reliable form of transportation :)

They will be creating cheaper more obtainable cars under the same emblem however this car brings attention to the brand. Nissian has the alitma but at the same time has the GTR. Give it time and give it a chance. Its a prototype.

Because its Factually False for Performance EVs including NIO EP9. Most sports EV have an interesting sound. Personal I like the Rimac Concept series the most, they have awesome jet like sound from gears.

It's new territory for electric, typically if say you look at a Tesla Model S, the top speed is moderately disappointing if you are used to petrol power.

This cars friggin amazing. At goodwood, the pebbles hitting the bottom of the car, were louder than the motors. It was comparable to the VW IDR, which beat the fastest ever time up pikes peak by about twenty seconds. While I was there, the IDR only beat it by something like 1.3 seconds. And this car, the EP9, which will go down in history to signify the point where electric overcame internal combustion.... for $1.2 Million?

So You said that it has the biggest brake discs on a production car - Bentley's been putting out 420mm fronts for a while. Maybe they're the biggest rears at 408 (from what I can find). Love the car though. If it lives up to the hype and can get into semi-serious production (let alone the rest of the company) that'd be great.
