Nice review - thank you very much. I am running it on my Sony Xperia 10 III with Alien Dalvic (that means the currently most powerful smartphone with the paid version with Android support) and it easily handles my needs as a daily driver and is really nice. I really like the guesture based navigation (you didnt really show it but the top menu is very nice too. Anytime you see a small colored line at the top, there is a top menu to be opened), the privacy aspects and the look and feel of it.
@@dinozaurpickupline4221 In general yes. The free version is mostly open source (GUI isnt fully), the paid version has a few features (Android Support, MS Exchange connection, etc.) which is not. But in general the OS itself is open source.
@@themichalos2350 I would not call it "a lot". Some are yes. Still better than most other OSes out there if u like Open Source. Anyway I think because the GUI isn't, you get some what of a consistent experience, which is rarely the case with full open source software and of cause you get something like fully integrated android apps and as simple as it sounds: A way to earn money for the company, which is maintaing it. I can live with that.
Nokia N9 was 10 years ahead of the competition and they resigned because they were afraid that there was no third party apps for N9 - it was so stupid of them
Ceo Microsoft were send to infiltrate Nokia and he sold Nokia mobile to Microsoft. Then Microsoft abandon lumia and sell the rights of Nokia mobile name to newly created HMD. HMD is ex Nokia and erricson, but they didnt know how to make quality phone
We can ask for the return on meego/sailfish, with a petition it can be done. I would also make a petition for the return of windows phones, not only android. I'd even put a crowd sourcing event for that. I dream for a pure Nokia phone.
Great OS but the device support is what it's gonna determine their (commercial) success! It can become the best OS, but if it only works on Sony phones (which are very expensive and unpopular), I don't see it getting lots of support. So unless they do it for fun, they should care about device support.
I was thinking if it could work with pre-n9 nokia phones, something like the 808 or other symbian belle phones, sailfish os would be a great OS if you could replace these dead OSs with it
My first Android was a Sony Xperia Z3, and it was an amazing phone. At the time it had a particularly high-end camera that blew others away. I remember my girlfriend at the time had the latest Google Nexus, and she was envious of the picture quality. I wish Sony's phones were more popular here, but Samsung seemed to take the lead. I've never been a fan of the software on Samsung's Androids, and I finally gave up my Sony for the first generation Pixel. I'm pretty much stuck with Pixels now, but I'm tempted to go back to iPhone sometimes.
@@drownthepoor Oh, the good old Xperia! My first, personal phone was Xperia Z! Amazing memories! The last few days, it happened that we "dug" a XA that my mother got and its UI is amazing compared to modern bloated and boring shit that phones have.
I used this for 2 years and really loved the look and feel, and the many patches that I could easily install through a gui to make it behave like I wanted. Swipe based navigation was cool but is also supported by other ios and android now. The biggest issues that annoyed me were: camera is low quality, only supported phones are a few Sony's, app launching takes longer than on Android, tap to wake not really supported, and TH-cam is a bitch (no native client, not their fault). On the up side: way less distracting than your standard Android, no time wasting addictive games, all software free, beautiful interface that you can change the theming off, system wide adblock, no Google Spyware on your phone, and so few annoying notifications that I was shocked when going back to Android.
@lokeung0807 not sure if it still works, but I think it does. It uses Alien Dalvik though, as WhatsApp made it impossible for third parties to make clients (this might be changing given the EU's compatibility mandate). It did run just fine when I was using it. Signal had a native client if I recall correctly. But it's been years since I used it. I really loved the OS and didn't mind tinkering, but I need Android for work, and the camera was absolute crap with Sailfish (due to Sony being a b*tch)
I started using SFOS since the beta... I even bought the Jolla 1 and still have it. I have learned to use stuff like uber and twitter on the browser as "apps" and it kinda works I do feel better by not even having android support installed. However I am concerned support for the 10 IV is still not here and wonder if Jolla/Sailfish is about to bite the dust. I consider it (Using no android support and most of the stuff through the browser) a smart-ish phone which is great because I want to limit my dependency and time on the phone and wherever possible make it hard for by bro and big tech to profile me... even if a bit. Cheers from Costa Rica.
@@n900videoThanks for the update great to know... I have tried to use android and I just do not like it and iOS is out of the question... they make me miss Windows mobile/metro. Glad we have SFOS for a bit longer
Nice alterantive to android, but without homescreen I would feel little bit homeless )) Is it possible to place some shortcuts or widgets to the main screen?
Not sure if you mentioned it but, just found out you can sideload apps with it! Downsizing from my S21 has me worried enough to probably not try it, as my main phone.
I would like to see someone just create a launcher or custom ROM, I'd be more interested. I know Jolla created a launcher years ago, but it doesn't work on newer phones & it just didn't have the polish that Sailfish does, so it really isn't a good representation, IMO anyway. I like the interface, & the "ambiance" themes, but I have no interest in flashing a whole new OS where Android apps are an afterthought. IMO adding Android app support is just an admission that their native app selection is pitiful.
No alternative phone review should be complete without a test of the performance of Whatsapp. Cellphones without Whatsapp are useless nowadays. If it emulates Android it can run Whatsapp. Does it do it well?
Yep Sailfish does it very well, if you update frequently the app ! I use as my daily an XA2 with sailfish since 4 years now, and i have whatsapp, telegram, signal and many other Android apps, some as full functionality but some (not the majority) can not !

@@ContinuumGaming Wrong sadly. Alot of Sailfish OS components are proprietary including the UI.

when i see Nokia N9 in Sailsifh OS review video i cant describe my passion.

Well, having the factory reset option behind a paywall isn't helping their cause

Jolla went through a restructurization process a few weeks ago but it looks like the future of the company and the OS are safe.

meego icons are such eye candy
why do the n9 meego os still looks better than an OS develop after it.. such a shame they didnt use the design language of meego.
Thanks for the review. I will try it with Xperia X soon.
How is the image quality with Sailfish compared to the stock camera app with Android.
yeah, i miss the design and look of old good Lumias
How didn't you test Quake II?
Black n9 on the left. I still have the blue one but i dont use since 2017
Can you copy an image off the internet and paste it to a document or note
Can i install that on mediatek 8100 phones?
very nice - what was the black device you held up?
Nokia N9

Better than android?
Not really an alternative when you can't get one.

if you wait long enough it will find the satellites ... for some variants of XA2 it is working properly.
