Funny, to me as a Symbian^3, then meego, the windows metro and day one SFOS user I have found SFOS quite usable since day one. It all depends on how tethered or dependent you are as a human to your phone. To each their own, no critique, I have not had an android or iOS phone ever only sailfish since 2014 and I've done quite right. Nice review, cheers from Costa Rica
As much as I would also like to see that, Sailfish has been in the works for quite a few years at this point, so if they were to become a real alternative to Android & iOS, they would've already succeeded at that at least 5 years ago
why doesn't Sony just move to make a smartphone with Sailfish OS officially. Sony is very underrated with Android, it can be said that it is not successful with Android. In my opinion, sailfish OS is better than Android and iOS. Come on Sony and Jolla, make a breakthrough. Sony is a big company and Jolla has a very sophisticated OS. If they join officially, they can definitely produce a smartphone that is more sophisticated than the current smartphone
@@joppyccom I agree with you, it would be great, but we are not living in a perfect world unfortunately. Even though Sony smartphones sales are small, they for sure could offer dual boot for android + Sailfish OS, BUT “big guys” from Google would come and intimidate Sony ("no Google Play from us" or "pay more now for our services per device"). This is how it works, it reminds me of BeOS and Hitachi Flora Prius computers story, when Microsoft came and threatened Hitachi. Sony may be afraid of such scenarios
I think it's also about risks. Android however already have big part of pie of market and most people, if you look around, use phones on Android and iOS. Also Sony price policy is not so attractive for users. And company actually many time has say that phone production will be curtailed in future (That's why Sony leave such big market as Brasil and some countries of South East Asia some time ago). @@alexgut1everything It's even worse, Sony left US market recently (not completely, but new flagships are not available in the USA anymore). Their price policy can't be different either, since they sell few phones and their expenses are high. So I don't propose to make Sailfish OS only phones, nobody will buy that of course (unless you have advertising budgets bigger than Microsoft's). But, dual boot can be a solution, customers will not miss android, while they also receive more 'features' from Sony smartphone. But again, Google will not allow that. Sony is not in the position to risk at all
Sony is for niche market and availability. They only sell to select Asian Market and EU. Their phone are terrific, ip 68 with 3.5mm capable of 24bit/192hz. It's a flagship phone but their budget phone is not good. I can get Samsung S23 for additional 60 bucks (comparing to Sony 10 VI)
Not so easy to come up with a start up OS. Microsoft can tell you how that went ( windows phone os ) . Unless you have a lot of money to pay the developers to make the apps for your OS. And if Microsoft which basically have a huge budget could not make windows phone os survive...
Are normal Linux applications commonly usable on Sailfish? Sailfish seems to use normal Linux stuff like Wayland, RPM, systemd, etc, so it should be possible to package libraries like GTK+. Apparently someone got havoc running on an older version, with some difficulties because of older Wayland versions, so I was wondering if something like that would come up during normal use? Especially if you want to avoid Android ports where Linux versions exist.
@TempCrap-nn4cm Not electron but react-native, it will still be native at the end. reason why is because i've already built apps for both iOS and Android, i really don't want to manage 2 separate apps that do the same thing.
Great review! I am not sure if one can recommend this phone as a device immune to government surveillance software like Pegasus, though. The software like this use security vulnerabilities in Android and iOS, and the only reason why SailfishOS feels more secure is the lack of proper security audit - so few breaches and CVEs are widely known to be specific to Sailfish OS, not just Linux in general. When Sailfish gets more popular, a situation may happen that it is even easier to crack automatically than a recent Android or iOS version.

What happened to Sailfish OS on keypad mobiles?
It was never available on feature phones. Or do you mean Gemini PDA?
@@Bohdan_HI-TECH Nope! a project to port Sailfish to Keypad phones was on cards and a Prototype device (Nokia 3310 look alike) was displayed in one summit too. Even Saifish OS website included some details then but nowhere to be seen now. You can search for Sailfish OS on Nokia 3310 in youtube, you'll get a demonstration video.
This would be an awesome alternative to android and iphone.
Iirc sailfish is more like desktop Linux than android?

Doesn’t exist

Hi! I am not able to find any installation guid videos for supported devices from Sony. I am not that advanced to be able to follow writen guide on official website. Is there any guide? Can you make one if not:) ? You make greate videos and you have conviced me to try it! I have Sony 10III
@@SrpskiInat Hm, very good video topic. Certainly would consider this. Currently I’m waiting for OS 5 official release, which will make it possible to compare Jolla C2 and Sony directly. Then I thought I would sell Sony (as I have to many phones already))
But maybe I will make installation video first 🙂
@@Bohdan_HI-TECH Thanks for fast respons! Another idea can be how to upgrade to 5.0 version:)
@@SrpskiInat Upgrading to version 5 will be very simple and straightforward, since official OTA update will be available for all currently supported devices, except Jolla Tablet and Jolla C1 (2015). I believe new OS will be available as update by the end of the year

Ok, 2024 getting interesting
Is it tied to Sony? Why not release for new Pixels? More mind/market share == more funds?
Sony has Sony Open Devices program, which means that they provide Android Open Source Project (AOSP) device configurations on GitHub.
It also includes many other things, such as:
- the easiest possible way to unlock bootloader online (on this website developer.sony.com/open-source/aosp-on-xperia-open-devices/get-started/unlock-bootloader)
- a freely distributed flash tool ("Emma", developer.sony.com/open-source/aosp-on-xperia-open-devices/get-started/flash-tool/download-the-flash-tool)
- direct cooperation with Jolla
etc.
No other (big enough) vendor - including Google - provide all of this
Been waiting years to get this on my Xperia hopefully now is the time.
Or, you can preorder a Jolla phone 2 (as long as it is still available):

@@Bohdan_HI-TECH Thanks. I been looking for something like this for a long time so I will likely still try. I would easily lose $500 to even take a SHOT at getting Sailfish OS on a premium phone.
@@intalek305 Well, Jolla phone 2 with its €300 price tag is an easy choice, although its specs are not premium to say the least (chinese SoC, 1600x720 screen). For premium I would certainly go with Sony Xperia 10 V
As an author of microtube, you get +1 point for showing microtube and -3 points for not showing picoplayer during video playback, showing fernschreiber instead of my yottagram (yeah we got beef lmao), and not using nanofiles for file browsing
@@the_mister_magister Hi, I tried Pico Player before shooting the video, but it didn’t open the movie that I showed here, so I just moved on. For file management I prefer File Browser, but your app is great too, as well as Yottagram. This is just another proof of great community apps choice, that Sailfish OS is all about, so all of them are hard to put in one single video 🙂 Thank you for your apps and being part of the community! 👍🏻
By the way, in Microtube, do you plan to add video quality settings in the future? Or does it constrained by the Sailfish OS / TH-cam limitations?
@@Bohdan_HI-TECH they're already there, just look into settings
@@Bohdan_HI-TECH It's in the settings

It looks really nice but....idk. I think I would still want to try it, and see how well it works on a daily basis. Great review though.

This looks like another pine64 mess tbh
Pinephone is probably the worst device you could own nowadays, besides a literal brick, and even then the brick would be of use.
It is a niche product, so it wouldn't supposed for mainstream use. Worst for most people but good for a minority.
@@WildWildWeasel Can’t be compared with Pinephone/pine64 at all, Jolla and Sailfish OS is on a whole other level
@@uytin99 Interestingly, Sailfish OS (and Jolla phone) was originally created for a mainstream user, so it is fundamentally different from “Linux smartphones” or “privacy phones” we see today. In 2013 it was believed that there’s a place for alternative mobile OS in the future, and Jolla actually thought they could get a 10% share, for example.
This is why I think the original team that created the OS (and there were 200-300 people back then, not 20) focused on a user centric and intuitive system. It is only afterwards that Sailfish OS became a niche product for enthusiastic developers
@@Bohdan_HI-TECH Oh nice to know! Sailfish and Meego, which are both developed by the same team, is so beautiful. Sadly they come out too late and are underfunded to take on Google and Apple, when they had established a strong foothold in the OS market.

Aurora OS by russians :)
Aurora OS is an independent fork the Finns sold to russians. It is not connected to Sailfish OS, fortunately. I remember Jolla said that OMP (russians) hasn't made a lot of commits to code when they were partners. So russians were more focused on corporate/government apps and integrating FSB certificates to the browser. Oh, and they also changed system icons 🤣

Still they sell Aurora OS phones and tablets mostly to gov. sector and some affiliated companies, and for simple users there is only two models of phone, which started selling in the very end of 2023.And results sells are poor (less than 5000 units). The other hilarious thing is that Android emulator for Aurora OS is paid, prices on devices are Inadequate and phones and tablets in it's own... ...are made in China😂, not in Ruzzia.
But ruzzians still veeery proud of "their" OS and manufacturers 🤣🤧🤦🏼♂️
