But yeah, Ditto is such a great song, and the eerie/nostalgic/creepy vibes were a 100% win for me. For me they are the rookies of the year, all their songs until now were bangers!
The girl's name, Ban Hee Soo, is a fun expression of bunnies' Korean pronunciation and symbolizes fans. Like a girl who watches members on a video camera, fans watch TV or TH-cam videos, and the boy represents real problems (academic, employment), and the wind and rain mean trials. They support each other, but in the eyes of those around them, idols are only seen as otaku. Throwing away the camcorder means quitting fan activities, and as Minji said, the scene of looking at the deer from afar expresses the distance between fan and idol. Just as news gins come true when playing video tapes later, this MV shows the relationship between fans and idols. , It's amazing that a 5-month-old rookie girl group released such a song and a music video, and this is something that other idols and fans can relate to!

We obviously missed a lot of the storyline since we were caught up in the song 😥😅 we have went back and rewatched, very dark.

The storyline for this one is actually quite complex, notice how the group are missing, the girl recording is reminising, but the group is gone, either reminising about old times and how they are no longer there, maybe dead? Or just about us fans (the person recording) watching them when we are older, like nostalgia. It's pretty deep.

A shame that western reactors are still caught up on 1) the ages (esp when other groups have done the same or worse; not to mention the myriad of groups created for children 7-12) 2) cookie misinterpretation 3) and missing the storyline of ditto. Oh well

The Cookie thing has been completely midunderstood. Firstly, the lyrics were translated badly, and what we read in the English translation isn't exactly what the meaning or intention of the words in Korean, so from that standpoint alone, you cannot trust the English translation of that song. Secondly, the Cookie is a representation of their CD and discography. You don't really get that from the English lyrics, but from what I've read of Korean's commenting on the video they do get that meaning. The song is about us fans, wanting to enjoy their CD/Cookie. Basically. It's song for their fandom, that's what it represents. The fact that the lyrics are mistranslated and misinterpreted by us English speaking people, is really on the fault of us English speaking people for taking it that way. We have a certain set of slang words for things that Korean's do not have, so we see it as one thing, when in reality, in its native tounge, it is not that. So we kind of need to look beyond our own bias and culture, and look to see what it means to Korean's.

I hate when people say this because it’s so obvious the company was trying to market them in a sexual way to the western market it’s not even just the lyrics and the metaphor it’s the video too like when Danielle sings looking at my cookie and leans out she’s literally staring into the camera seductively also they know for Koreans they aren’t gonna take it the same way but they know how westerners will and it’s a convenient cover if things went left which they did hard plus all the stuff about the creative director
it’s clear how it was marketed from how the production sounds n the way they even started the song it literally sounded like a doja cat song
Nah, the pretzels you’re trying to twist yourself to with this is crazy. And the tacked on explanation Ador gave us laughable at best. But it’s even more laughable the way some people are eating it up.
I think it’s fairly obvious that the track was first created with sexual suggestive intentions. It was a simple demo floating out there waiting to be bought by a label. The generous reading of it is that Ador liked the vibe of the track, didn’t really care about its underlying message or thought others wouldn’t, and released it (which is what I think happened). I think people calling Min HeeJin a predator is more than a little over the top but the track, itself, is written to be sensual. If the same track, no changes made, was given to and older/ more mature group no one would be debating its intentions. At the end of the day I really think Ador was trying to launch the group with different tracks that had different vibes and Cookie checked off their ‘r&b’ box and sounded the closest to what they were looking for and said fuck it to everything else.
You’re still aloud to like the group and admit that particular track was a misstep on Ador’s part.

the meaning is supposed to be kinda nostalgic. it can represent a number of things. one of them is between fans and idols. fans is the girl recording and newjeans are the idols. kpop can be a way to escape reality for some fans, but us fans also have our own lives. we fall in love, get married, and eventually drift away from kpop. but it can also represent our younger selfs. we were all so happy back then and werent expecting what the future had for us, so whenever we think about those times it can comfort us but we still have our own lives to deal with. sorry if this didnt make sense i didnt really know how to word it

Ive watched a explanation of a korean person and she says they are trying to portray the so called parasocial relationship with idol groups in this case the girl who spends time with New jeans (filming them) as an escape from her life issued (maybe she is an abused girl as they show her with a cast) meanwhile as she grows she seems to be slowly taking an interest romantic love (the boy in the mv) and eventually she leaves New Jeans (she throws the camera and destroy it) then they show at the end how the girl has grown up but she plays the tape with the videos meaning that even if she left them behind once she can always comeback to reminice the memories that will forever be there. Last but not least the animal represents some korean meaningful shit about one person feeling that even when you really want to reach out and be closer to someone (in this case the idol group who obviously she can never get close to bcs theyre celebrities) she will never ever reach them. Suming up They are being genuine about how they think the fans are special for them as they love to entertain and make their lives a little bit better or happier by being sort of an escape wich is always true with music. But also they show in an honest way that maybe the fans wont be their fans forever bcs life is like that you ha e to focus on yourself more than an artist but still the moments lived will remain as good memories and something to treasure.
They have served the best songs among the girl groups for me this year.
also if u search the name of the girl who films they r uploading every vhs clip featured in the video as if its the girls own channel super cool marketing of a like behind the scenes type thing but also expanding on the lore of the vid

Lol, it's harder than it looks to: not know a group, watch a video for first time, trying to hear the song and take it all in... Then all you get is hundreds of comments saying "you didn't even get the story" I'm sitting here like "I don't even know how many members are in the group" 🤣🤣
Kpop MV is not easy... especially this kind of storyline MV.
Think about why the camera girl is wearing a cast.
There was an accident and all newjeans members are died, the camera girl survived alone.
She sees the delusions of her friends who have died because of trauma, but meets her boyfriend and realizes that her friends do not exist, so she escapes the delusion, sends her friends, and moves on. Deer also symbolizes dead friends.
And when time passes and she get lonely again, the ghosts come back again.
cookie was not provocative or even meaning to be sexual in any kind of way, cookie means cd in south korea. the song is about us (their fans/listeners) enjoying their cds and wanting more music from them. korean fans have been saying this since it came out, it was a huge hit in sk.
I mean no disrespect to both of you guys, but you just didn’t do your homework with NewJeans… the fact that you guys asume the meaning behind “Cookie” as provocative, the girls have explain the plot and meaning of the song… I love that NewJeans mv’s are though outside the box and create controversy on simple minded people and “cookie” is a great example of that… as for “ditto” you guys missed the pilot entirely so if you’re going to react to a mv, respect te artist, do a bit of homework, and pay attention.

there is theories around they were friends from an old school that either got in an accident with her (thus broken arm) and they r ghosts she can see of her old friends helping her get through grief and learn to embrace life again (boys etc) or as its connected to their new song omg they r new jeans who went crazy (maybe from accident) and went away and she changed schools because of incident and remembering them/imagining them. or as they drew her on the chalkboard potentially she is the ghost ( i don't believe as much as shows her older at end) or they drew her because she moved away ( or she hopes they r thinking about her like she is) and was friends and now she has to navigate new school opening up to new people.
