"Rite of Spring on Hard Mode" is why we conductors chuckle when people ask "Don't you guys just wave your arms around?" The big differences between the game and real life are we don't have little traffic directions floating in front of our face telling us what to do (man, I wish!) and there's no track to follow, so there isn't even any groove to get into - we have to make the groove!! And yes, musicians will 100% intentionally play poorly if you are sucking. It won't be because they suddenly got bad at their instruments - it will be to punish us for being bad at our jobs. Probably the most realistic part of the game 😅
Like just look at this - legend. It looks like he's just flailing or dancing around but literally every single movement he makes (by memory) is to direct the orchestra through one of the most difficult pieces ever written, and he makes it look almost easy. th-cam.com/video/a9M2oTHa3GM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=15YZZB-MbZzaP2s2&t=1800
@@fds7476I’ll tell you, honestly, they are pretty close - pleasantly surprising. Obviously every conductor does things a little differently as it is, so there’s room for interpretation. Some of the “arrow direction” motions are not quite “correct” but in general, you can definitely tell the motions were designed by someone who gets what conductors do. Things have been simplified in most cases, and actually made more difficult than reality in a few spots, but they got close enough that while I wouldn’t use it as a teaching tool, I’d definitely use it to show my friends “what it feels like to do what I do”
as a choir singer, guys, people surely can see it as strange that we can read your frantic hand movements XD but for us it really does matter, thanks for your work
Fun fact: over 2 years ago a game called... well, Maestro VR debuted in early access on Steam. This is completely another game, much more realistic if you ask me, because the first thing it teaches you is how to keep the metrum and tempo in different counts and you have to do this the whole time! This game here is much more a conductor phantasy and gives much more thrill :D
In a major orchestra, there are more than enough players keeping time that a conductor is needed for giving the initial tempo and cues for major points - the rest is true musicians doing their thing. The thrill does indeed exist, but many will never experience it
Could you imagine the 1812 overture in that french revolution stage. it would be cool too if they could be dressed as the San Cullottes. or imagine if they brought a musical theater DLC to it and you could be doing Les mis on the that stage. or imagine being in the theater and conducting Phantom of the opera and the chandeleir falls.
That's actually not the french revolution, at least not the one you're probably thinking of. The flag on the left tower is actually the flag of the paris commune, which existed for 3 months in 1871 and was the first "successful" communist revolution. I'm not sure whether that was an intentional choice or just some dev looking up "french revolution flag" and picking the wrong one, because it seems like kind of a weird choice since it's presumably supposed to be for 1812 overture and those types of songs(though imo the commune does have a couple good songs of it's own, different vibe)
@@akorddiner9853I mean.. it’s the most famous part of the Phantom of The Opera? And, the idea is NOT boring in my opinion. For a rhythm game, that would be awesome. I bet you have never watched Phantom of The Opera, and that’s why you think that’s boring. The game is very fun, as I have it and played it, and the chandelier falling for a Phantom of The Opera song would be a great touch.
I was in band and marching band for the entirety of my school life. This brought back good memories lol. Your conducting skills are incredibly hilarious. The only thing missing is the conductor stopping the song half way to yell at the percussion for being off beat and thus messing everyone up. It’s always their fault lol.
Even more than most VR games, video does not do how much fun this is justice. I enjoy many rhythm music games in VR (I mean, who doesn't like Beat Saber?) but there's an added level of exhilaration in Maestro that's next level. Cannot recommend it highly enough if this kind of game is your thing, and I genuinely cannot wait to see what DLC they have in store.
Copyrighted orchestral music is first come first serve on who claims it, is my observation. The music is not copyrighted, the audio is. But then if you say recorded your own version of a bach suite and it sounds identical to london phil, they could copyright that. But this again is just my observation based off previous youtubers attempting to use copyrighted orchestra music.
I will say right out I think that's insanely dumb. Once music has entered public sphere, you can try to sell your version, but I don't think that so long as it is pretty much copy of the intended version, that it should have any right being copyrighted at all.
Yep. Legally-speaking, there are two components to a song--the song itself, and the actual recording, and both are protected by different copyrights and different standards. The stuff like Mozart, Bach, etc. is public domain because it is so old but newer recordings...yeah. Now, if you were to find a recording of an orchestra from, say 1900, that *MIGHT* be in public domain. (I confess, I don't really remember how that works, though)
A quick tip, for the Orange and Blue (Raising and Lowering) if it's rounded then you can just hold your hand their, if it's a pointed one then you must Raise and Lower your hand
They should make full length performance levels. (I don’t know much about the game, maybe they have it for some already?)Imagine trying to get 5 stars on the entire 36 minutes or so of Rite of Spring or an hour of a Mahler Symphony.
Its really one of the best games ive ever played in life. Im talking from someone who started gaming on nes mario/duckhunt. If only it had full songs and more of them, and frankly i am constantly smiling while playing it.
Hey, I really liked the Maestro demo, and got excited for the full game. However people are saying that the music isn't timed right with the composing, is that true? Also, is the game difficult, because the demo was way too easy.
Playing Carl Orff's "O Furtuna" from Carmina Burana - "I like that this music is super old!" Like all good music directors, really know his music :) (It is from 1936)
As soon as the preview for Rite of Spring started playing Sacrificial Dance I knew you were boned lol, that passage is WEIRD It changes time signature almost every measure, and all of them are really funky, so it's kind of a nightmare to play. Still love it though
Copyright on classical music is not about the piece/song itself but about the performance. An orchestra from X place will have their recording and then one from Y will have theirs and both be copyrighted. The ones that usually aren't, are older performances that are usually over 50 years old at this point or more but still sound excellent. Not knowing where they got theirs and not knowing if it would function as a game soundtrack then I'd assume it would be. That's unfortunate tho, it being a game about music and then basically, in a way, not making it easy for people tho share their experiences with others.
I have yet to get a perfect on Rite of Spring hard. I swear if you mess up TWICE you can’t get perfect on rite of spring :( But omg this is the best VR game of all time (so far) I usually play for about an hour and then take a water break!
I would dare say it would be easier if your keeping beat it be just doing the 2nd hand part is really hard if your doing a good 3/4 sort of tempo with your right and having the swing up for 4 but signal on it. For those people its basically having your right arm swing up and left arm swing down at the same time.
I’ve been playing the game myself after seeing this video. Does anyone know what the bright green sticky note that says “the heleicopter to take you ro the cafe terrance is ready” means? I got this sticky note instead of a new song and want to know what I do next
unless you are a real-life conductor...it is 1000 more times harder. I am a cellist in my high school orchestra(I am lucky to have a full orchestra, albeit we do have some limitations on pieces due to winds), and it is hard enough just to play. A lot of errors beside that as well- conductors mostly will still conduct through solos- with the exception sometimes(e.g. Zigeunerweisen by Sarasate- so much rubato for soloist)
Wolf, I know that you like to play new games but for me, please play subside please because I really wanna see what kind of new stuff that have you unlocked so please
4:51 Wait how can really old music be copyrighted? The people who made that music is dead. Who's gonna claim copyright? Their (insert number of greats since idk how to do that math) granddaughter or (insert number of greats) grandson?
It's not the music itself, but the performance that's copyrighted. If Wolf performed the song, he could use it, but he can't use the particular recording by, say, the London Philharmonic.

Do they serve a purpose or are they just imaginary?
