Let me break it down for you Mark. Mr. Roflwaffles was kidnapped on a livestream he had done where he was investigating this website that was only found thanks to the war dialer in Cold War... yes I know how crazy that sounds out of context lol
Regardless of whether or not this ARG is Activision run, fake, yadda yadda yadda, I have personally ALWAYS been a HUGE fan of the War Dialer in Cold War. I have multiple videos in the past and shorts and streams about this. In essence, War Dialing is having your computer call modems and seeing if the modem is a carrier. That's what I understand basically, and it is a real thing done in the 80s, and for WHATEVER reason, they brought it here to Cold War. Don't know why. So when I saw that there was a supposed "error" screen on the War Dialer according to a reddit user, I HAD TO investigate.
Which brings us here. I'm letting this run indefinitely, within reason. I want to get to the bottom of this one way or the other. I personally believe the "error" screen that was shown on Reddit is fake as the user NEVER SAID THE PHONE NUMBERS THEY USED... which is the only way to dial. And trust me, if you're curious enough to investigate this War Dial program, you're going to have a good reason behind the phone numbers you investigate and why you chose them, not "random" numbers.
So... why DID I choose the numbers that you see are being scanned? Area code 555 is famous for being the "fake number" used by media. It's primarily used in movies and games to simulate a real phone number but calling exchange 555 will come up with nothing. NOTE THIS IS MY RUDIMENTARY UNDERSTANDING, PLEASE FACT CHECK ME AND MY FACT CHECKING. The extension 654 is from another reddit post talking about numbers found in a certain mission in a server room (will post links to all this later). 555, 654, then scan 0000-9999 until it either runs all the way or we get carriers. That, or we get this supposed "error message".
UPDATE: I am now trying 408-555 then from 0000-9999 due to multiple posters in Pines Mall having that area code/exchange and Activision's own area code being 408 in the 80s. We got from 0000 to ~2800 in 14.5 hours. not bad, Let's do more.
