Martyr of Moscow: Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich

  • Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia (Russian: Сергей Александрович; 11 May 1857 - 17 February 1905) was the fifth son and seventh child of Emperor Alexander II of Russia. He was an influential figure during the reigns of his brother Emperor Alexander III of Russia and his nephew Emperor Nicholas II, who was also his brother-in-law through Sergei's marriage to Elisabeth, the sister of Empress Alix. Suffering from #tuberculosis throughout his life, #GrandDukeSergei was a skilled flutist and dancer. Married to #ElisabethofHesse who would become #SaintElizabeth , they had no children. #SergeiAlexandrovich defended #Moscow from internal attack throughout his life, and was assassinated in the street in 1905.

    Do you think there’s any chance the Dowager Empress was correct in thinking her son and his family were NOT murdered?
    I wonder what her suspicions were.
    She was sensible.

      Great question. It seems Dagmar was, like her sister Queen Alexandra, very wary of Bolshevik influence in Europe and didn't want to do anything to trigger it. Dagmar retreated her to her own home in Denmark where by many accounts she lived with a reduced staff with her photos and mementos. She could have lived in the UK but chose not to.

      As described repeatedly in the video, the children were his brother's and his brother's wife's.
