How Do We Measure the Airspeed of an Airplane?

  • The small tube in the nose of the F-16 is what measures its speed. Although its design is basic (by today's standards), it serves an important role: it allows the pilot to know the airspeed. It's very important to understand how fast the plane is going, because if it's too slow, it will fall. Many terrible plane crashes have happened in the past for one reason: the failure of the airspeed indicator. In this video I explain the construction of the pitot-static tube. How it works, what its physics are, and how important it is for planes, ships, and even Formula 1 cars.

Are they used on commercial planes?

Yes. Pitot tubes are used on all airplanes, boats, and even F1 cars.
