- WHAT A BIG EPISODE!!! Like I predicted, we went on a little time travel journey through the past from the start of Eren's life following Grisha. This was in an attempt for Zeke to 'fix' Eren, HA HE THOUGHT! But it was super interesting seeing things through Grisha, ESPECIALLY the scene with Freida. UM WHAT?? 2 MAJOR THINGS THAT CHANGE EVERYTHING!!! This is insaneeee! And then that moment with Grisha and Zeke...and then EREN!! Wowowowow! So many thoughts. Hope you enjoy!

So the interesting thing is that Grisha HATES Marley. He hates Marley with every fiber of his being. So imagine the horror of what Grisha saw when even he turns to Zeke and says Marley doesn't deserve what Eren is going to do to them
I'm 10x more scared but eager at the same time to see what Eren has planned

Shout out to MAPPA. They did this chapter perfectly. One of the best plot twist in fiction let alone anime/manga
Although we can all agree it's a difficult chapter to adapt, it's still a limited-resource, lazy-directing adaptation.
Oh yeah as an anime only I can say MAPPA killed it, without that animation and music and everything that went into the production it wouldn't have had nearly the same impact it did
So in order to avoid any confusion regarding the time travel mechanics, I will break down what type of Time travel we're dealing with here.
AOT operates by a particular type of time travel where it's almost impossible to change the past even if you somehow go back in time. And any change that you tried to cause was always meant to happen in the overall timeline. Here time is a fixed circle, not a stream. We may see Eren meddle in the past but that was always meant to happen.
The Attack Titan's ability is to receive the memories of its future inheritors. This was hinted when Kruger mentioned Mikasa and Armin towards the end of S3. Keep in mind, they can only view these memories but can't interact with them. So how was Eren able to meddle in the past?
Well, he had 3 perfect conditions:
1. He had the ability of the Attack Titan
2. The ability of the Founding Titan
3. He was also in contact with someone with royal blood AKA Zeke.
After Zeke tapped Eren's head, they were able to view Grisha's past memories with Eren using the power of the coordinate. They were freely able to view the past as if it were through a one way mirror.
Now if Eren had any other Titan other than the Attack Titan, he would only be able to look. But since Attack Titan can see forward in time, Grisha can use this to see Eren's recollection of the same event that he's currently experiencing in real time.
So this mean that whenever Grisha can see or hear Eren, he's actually recieving a brief future memory from Eren's POV where he can see out of his eyes and hear his words. That means he is seeing himself from a 3rd perspective. Then if he responds, his response is simply part of the memory that Eren/Zeke are viewing, allowing for a two way communication through time.
Also Note that everytime, Grisha sees Zeke, Eren is always standing behind his dad. So whenever Grisha sees Zeke, it is from actually due to the memories from Eren's POV
Another thing to add:
Eren did NOT see everything in the future. Eren only saw CRUCIAL moments in the future, for example, he saw Pieck pointing a gun at him when he kissed Historia’s hand 4 years ago, this is why he was so calm when she threatened to shoot him, because Eren KNEW she wouldn’t shoot him. However, Eren DIDN’T know that Porco was going to try to eat him just a couple of minutes later. Even Eren doesn’t know EVERYTHING that will happen.

Don't forget that Grisha was so terrible as a father that he made Zeke (a kid, same age of Falco and Gabi) have no choice: Save his own life or die as titan. And also, that child Zeke was accepting death until the other Beast Titan changed his mind. I really don't blame Zeke for his feelings for Grisha.
Yeah grisha was a terrible father to zeke, it's not like he didn't love him but he put his restorationist dreams above his kid and wanted to use him for that. Zeke was the child grisha wanted in paradise and eren was the child grisha needed in marley.
Oh yeah no I don't blame Zeke at all for that, just pointing out that they both did wrong by each other even though one was a consequence of the other yknow? But it is what makes that moment between Grisha and Zeke all the more impactful
For those were confused: when Grisha said "Why don't you show me everything?" it meant Eren was sending future memories to Grisha but not everything. Meaning there is only 1 set timeline. So what Eren sent to Grisha were certain future memories. So when Grisha gave Eren the Founding + Attack Titan, Eren gained Grisha memories which also contained Future Eren's memories. But he only unlocked it when he kissed Historia's hand. Someone confirm this. I'm trying to say it in a way where I'm only going with what's in the anime and not the manga.
I guess I'll also explain why Grisha can see Eren and Zeke. It's pretty simple. One of the certain memories Eren showed Grisha was the one happening right now. So Grisha see's what our Eren (which is considered the future one) sees. And what Future Eren sees, is everything happening around him, including Zeke. So, when Grisha noticed Zeke when he was sitting by the desk, that was because in Eren's memories, Eren was standing behind him looking at Zeke. So those 2 scenes clashed... in a way.

It could be. All depends on perspective imo. I still stand by my choice to not decided on Eren without the whole picture. This also means I am not rooting for him but I'm also not not rooting for him

People will still side with him at this point only because he was the main character, but if it were anyone else, he'd automatically be villian

On a serious note, it's really scary how Grisha, someone who was so anti-Marley and pro-Eldia, saw one glimpse of Eren's plan and was like, "Zeke. You have to stop him." Despite Grisha's hate for Marley and how far he was willing to go, even HE thought his plan was too far. He was genuinely horrified. Whatever Eren's plan is, Grisha does not want it to happen.
Speaking of, Zeke and Grisha finally getting to work out their issues and hug each other in a moment of pure love is really heartwarming. Grisha understood his mistakes when raising Zeke before. Instead of only treating him as a tool, he treats him as his son. Zeke is finally able to take his first step towards closure after years of trauma. Even if they had their differences, Grisha and Zeke can at least agree with one thing: Stopping Eren..
For reallll, Eren was always in control haha.
Yeah yeah this is huge which makes me all the more eager but scared to finally find out what Eren has planned! And yeah that scene between Zeke and Grisha was so emotional and I'm honestly happy for them both. But now Eren!!!
The greatest twist in any fictional story out there. Incredible. Had me in tears during the Grisha and Zeke scenes.
Bigger and crazier than I could've ever expected!!
Gosh, the scene of Grisha hugging Zeke is just heartbreaking as he apologized for being a terrible father. Zeke wanted to believe Eren was the same as him; that he was being brainwashed, but he wasn't.
"I will never abandon you", just like Ksaver did for Zeke.
But Grisha changed and Zeke slowly accepted that.
Ksaver mentioned that Zeke's parents never loved him, but here Grisha states the opposite.
After so long, this seems to give Zeke a bit of closure.
Yeah that moment was super emotional and I can wholeheartedly say I am happy for both Grisha and Zeke for getting this moment
It’s amazing because in the manga (not too sure about the anime) back in the first chapter, it showed Grisha looking away from Eren when he was holding out the key telling him about the basement. Then low and behold, that same scene came back and showed that Grisha was actually looking at future Eren when he did that. The little callbacks all the way back to the beginning are incredible.
i immediately went back to watch that scene in the first episode after watching this one. Sadly they didn't include grisha looking away but they didn't show grisha's face at all just his hand so it still works even though if it was like the manga it would've been better.

Wish they'd included that in the anime, would've been a really cool detail to look back on or pick up on during a rewatch
@@Kamiyan4713 ik and i don't blame them maybe isayama himself didn't know at the time how exactly he was going to use those panels in the story, i think it's the same thing with mikasa having her wrist covered in the manga because she had her clan tatoo in there but in the anime it was always visible.
Grisha never saw "Older Eren" in those scenes, he saw himself through Eren's eyes, which is way more creepier if you think about it.

This episode made me cry I can proudly admit that. I've never cared so much for fictional characters but I've been following this show for so long now that the characters feel like family or friends and they feel real. So ground breaking revelations like this hit harder, Grishas meltdown towards the end especially is what got me.

That scene where Grisha desperately forced Eren with titan injection is now hits totally different. He had no choice but to follows everything accordingly from what he just saw. Everything accordingly to....Eren.
Also, if you're familiar with Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban, this is exactly the same time travel concept that applied. Everything that happen within time travel will never be contradict anything or creating time paradox because it's......always meant to be happen no matter what. It's called Novikov Self Consistency Principle.

Zeke cries because he finally got to hear his father apologizing for everything he did to him, owning up his mistakes and showing him FINALLY the love he so much longed for, I was so pissed off at you around 4:38, where you blamed an abused 7 year old boy for casting out the parents who endangered his life and viewed him as a tool until they lost him, but in the end you got it right. I am a manga reader and I won't spoil you, but Zeke is H U M A N, never forget that. Lovely reaction.

I think i figured it out the attack titan was inevitably going to Eren so it wasn't really important to convince his father to kill them he just wanted to seem like he's responsible for that so he take full responsibility of what happen and what's gonna happen
Umm that's not the way I'm interpreting it. I think it is thanks to Eren appearing in this moment that he got the Attack Titan. It was all meant to be like this from the very beginning

What an episode full of twists, the episode might be confusing but I try to view it from Grisha's POV since he's the one receiving the future memories, also I really like how they focused on grisha & Zeke, I know everybody hates Zeke I really felt empathy for him like he got to see grisha be a good father to eren while he suffered, with grisha I love that he recognized he was a shity father & their relationship came to a conclusion

Idk if you know this but in the first chapter of Aot manga, Grisha never looks at kid Eren. Wit left out that foreshadowing that now plays a huge role in the story

It was implied very clearly that Eren was born the way he is simply because of the fact that Griesha made love with Carla and impregnated her under the influence of the Attack Titan. Griesha's sperm cells have embodied the essence and spirit of the Attack Titan, therefore the baby growing inside Carla's womb will take form based on the will of the Attack Titan. Zeke, however, was created before Griesha had the Attack Titan, so Dina did not get impregnated with it.
Hmm that makes things alot more interesting, because Grisha is probably the only titan shifter to have kids, but maybe I’m wrong.

Eren saw his future self in the Grisha's past memories doing this at Reiss hideout by Grisha's memories of the future when Eren kissed Historia hand. That's why his personality changed. It couldn't be undone and the Grisha's line of "was this the only way?" plus after the attack on liberio Eren conversation with Hange questioning him he was said "is there any other way?". Eren has no choice either

One of the best things about this episode for me is the way it represented the Nature Vs Nurture argument. Zeke is the product of his environment and his current ideals are shaped by what he experienced in his past. He also believed that Eren was also the product of his environment; a pathetic little brother who was raised by a man who once again pushed his ideals down on his own son but that wasn't the case, Grisha didn't treat Eren the same way he did with Zeke. He actually learned from his mistakes (even adimitted to adult Zeke just how much of a horrible father he was to him). His dad didn't make Eren the person he is now. It's in his nature. This was evident the moment Eren killed those 3 kidnappers back in Season 1 without a hint of hesitation. The world didn't make Eren the way he is now, from the very moment he was born, Eren has *always* been this way.

Just a cool little detail I’ll mention... the only reason grisha could see Zeke was because eren was selectively sending those memories to grisha. Memories of eren witnessing grisha and Zeke speak to each other. That’s why every time grisha and Zeke interacted eren was standing behind them, watching both of them.
It’s super confusing and I’m sure I did a poor job of explaining it 😂 but essentially, grisha would talk, and hear/see the memory of Zeke’s response through eren’s memories, therefore establishing a way of communication. 🤯

Grisha wasn't actually seeing them. He was seeing things through current Eren's pov in the form of memories (Attack Titan users can see memories that future users send them). He also receives the memory of whatever it is Eren plans to do with the founder and is terrified by it. This terrifying memory is passed unto past Eren when he kissed Historia's hand. seeing what his future self did totally changed him. It's a perfect loop.

Eren assumes control, the Attack Titan manifests. If Grisha stops that will change the story, but he's the Attack Titan, so he can't. He lives for Eren or the result, same for the Owl. Slaves to the Attack Titan.

I think the cause of Grissa giving different treatment between Zeke and Erren is because when Grissa lived with Zeke he didn't have attack titan power yet and all his actions were still affected by the loss of his sister but when he got attack titan power all her actions were affected by Erren's future memories, Zeke thought erren was influenced by grissa brain washes but it's erren did it to grissa .

I think, the present Eren is not the past Eren. He is absolutely a different Person. The real thing is, he never planned the War. The Present Eren traveled the past, and manipulated everything from the beginning, but, the Past Eren or his Former self didn't do that or unaware of some sort. The Present Eren is also not the Eren we knew. He doesn't change either his values in life didn't change. All we have seen is his apparition. This Eren was created by his broken self, his negative persona. This persona appeared after the Death of his former self that we don't know when it happened. But certainly, this Eren is not himself.
My interpretation is that Eren never actually changed. He did go through character development, but sometime between season 3 and 4, he knowingly, and willingly rejected the development. He's the same childish, freedom drunk, suicidal blockhead he was at the training corp.

Zeke says Mr. Ksaver "saved his life", by showing him a father's love and giving him precious childhood memories. Nicolo, because of Sasha realized he could make people happy by cooking for them (new purpose).
Eren is fighting for all Eldians to have a life, a future essentially (which is why he tried to stop Zeke from screaming).
Zeke kills he's own people wants to slowly kill off his own race, because this war eventually affects the young/future generations...
& Eren is killing and fighting for his own & his people's future.
So in the end they all have their reasons that they believe are right and just

Grisha was emotionally and verbally abusive/neglectful to Zeke, of course he hates him 😬 those formative years are imperative in the formation of one's sense of self. Zeke sees himself as ultimately useless and wishes he'd never been born from his childhood trauma, while Eren was cherished and had a healthy childhood and still became how he is. In fact I'd argue that Eren is so driven because he was encouraged to be himself throughout his early childhood while Zeke was encouraged to pretend being someone he was not.

The reason I dislike Zeke is because he is so self centered that just because of his childhood trauma with lead him not liking to live, he thinks he can just take away everyone's freedom and choice of living as well. But you see the moment his issues with Grisha are solved he starts to twilt his resolve
No wonder he can kill so many people and laugh, he lacks basic empathy on so many levels

Eren is the last inheritor of AT, that's why he already knew what going to happen in the future, so he passes down all the information to the previous holders so the power of the AT is always ended up in him, in Eren himself. The tree like thing on the background is not actually a tree, it's a single line with a different branches of the outcome of the future. Ymir knew that Eren is the one will end it because Ymir did what Dr. Strange did. Everything happen through the series is the right thing it was set from the start by Ymir and Eren the one to end it. Eren is a lone Hero in this series.
