Thank you for the very clear presentation of how to hold the gouge. Your comment about holding it at 10 o’clock and 45 degrees helped me see what I have been doing wrong.

Thank you so much for the video, I've been turning just for a few months now on a very low cost lathe, but now I've got the bug I really need a more up market lathe and I'm sure I will not be disapointed with the Herald. I found your video very informative and learnt so much about holding the tools right, how to make differant cuts, and also loved all the safety aspecs too.

Does the1 horse power motor handles wet wood?
Yes no problem at all ive even turned a wet full size top hat on mine

made a mistake on is the weight. I saw other videos that said it was around 105 pounds not 1000 pounds.
Thanks for a really instructive video. Unfortunately I can't even afford to think about a new lathe although if I could afford to replace my 18 year old Record Power CL1 36/24 this would be my number one choice.
Having the belt change on the back seems it may be an issue. Would have been nice to see a speed change demo working from the front of the machine👍

Can't believe that you stood with one hand either side of the blank while you brought the speed up. I was told you should stand to one side - out of the line of fire - when you bring the speed up ???
Hi Mike, thank you for your comment. Andrew was confident that his process of work was with minimal chance of risk, however, Andrew suggests if work is unsupported by the tail stock then it would be wise to stand to the left hand side of the lathe when increasing speed. Additionally, if work has any bark or loose inclusion remove them before starting the lathe and again standing to one side would be good practice. The material in the demonstration had no defects, held firmly in dovetail jaws and supported by the tail stock therefore there was minimal risk of the material detaching from the machine.
