Triathlon is the most grueling sport even! I used to race pro short course triathlon 20 years ago. Now at 40 I jumped back into the age group racing and it’s gotten so so so much faster! People have no idea what it takes to do triathlon at any distance it’s an absolute grueling test of endurance and physiology but most of all your own mind!
Dude, I was impressed with his times. 6th AG, and 26th overall! He's most definitely put in some work. To hold a 1:40 pace for the swim is good, and a 24.5-25mph avg for bike is niiice, and he was pushing around a 7:20ish pace for the run! Could only find his overall times, (quick math for the paces). Olympic tris are the best in my opinion. Training for them is incredibly selfish for your family. You can train for an Olympic and still be a part of your family. Also if you aren’t a swimmer I would highly recommend you find a local masters swim team and train with them. They care everywhere and very welcoming. Usually there’s a coach to give you technique info.
I started learning how to swim well enough to do this starting by taking lessons 3 summers ago. The swimming is fun. I'll go to the river and just jump in swimming around like tarzan. There will be mexicans fishing, and barbecuing with their kids playing on the beach and I'm this dude swimming back and forth for fifty minutes. It's fun because the water is dark, and I can watch my heart rate on my goggles. You just focus on breathing and work rate. I love it because it's not like going to the gym were you're trying to look pretty or have bro-morons. There is bro-science in the river because idiots would be dead. You can't just take steroids or eat the spinach and start swimming like Popeye. You can't fake the physics of the swimming technique. You can't hold your breath like with lifting. It's just darkness and work in the water. It's all spirit. You're just swimming through the darkness.

depends on how fast you do them. just because its longer distance doesn't make it better. BTW I've done them all. IMO running a fast marathon "hurts" you the most.. I started Triathlons this year from years of marathon running, I did 3 sprints and one Olympic in training and then the 70.3 Ironman in Greece, i am totally hooked, what an amazing sport!
Yeah get Lionel Sanders on! Incredible story!!
Just finished up my ironman 70.3 indian wells yesterday with a borrowed surfer wetsuit 😂 when they brought that up in the interview I lol’d so hard
I'm almost 60 and I run 14 .Iles every other day... I started doing Triathlons back in 1984.... now I just run for fun back 20byeard ago I ran a half marathon in Death Valley when it was 123 degrees! Just because.
After years of going down a bad path Lionel Sanders and God inspired me to get after it 💪
glad your here brother keep crushing it
Sanders just competed in SLT arena games which is brutal short course stuff too
Been in the sport for 10 years. Love it. You can stay competitive for years if you keep up with it. I was a wrestler growing up.
Dave Mirra was a good triathlete as well.
Toughest sport in the world man. Unrelenting pain for 8-17hrs.
I went from a 10k to a full distance 140.6 Ironman in 6 months on a borrowed bike and didn't know how to swim until 2 months before race day. Yes, triathlons are hard. But, anything is possible!
Joe, you should get Joe skipper on here, Ironman champion many times over and one of the most interesting guys in sport.
I'm so proud of my Dad, he got me into Cycling, and I was in the Pool the day he passed,,, Peace3ed
You cannot do a sprint triathlon in 30mins. The top pros do it in around 52mins
I second that!
They probably ment super sprint
Rogan doesn’t understand the elite pro triathlete’s level of endurance
Usually, people that do weights won't understand.
@@nightsfalling what does doing Weights have to do with this? Any guy who doesnt do triathlons, doenst understand it
@felixk1843 people who "lift heavy things" are not athletes I'm sorry.
Peak strenght and peak endurance both have their place@@dowtie1997
Disagree... rogan knows the deal
Diaz vs Gomi was another fight where it seemed like he was absolutely beat, and then completely turned it around.
Getting off the bike and your legs feel like jello and you have to go run.
Shout out Lionel Sanders!! Love it
Thinking about starting thrilathon. What tips do you have? Can it be combined with heavy lift training?
Would I be right in saying that to do a full Ironman, you need be at the level of ""Athlete"" fitness wise?? I've a full coming up next year, and that's the level of fitness I'm telling myself I have to be at- an "Athlete".
Thanks for this guys- just ramping up for 1st 1/2 Ironman - Paul I am right with you. I call the swim training “not drowning” so far. Haha!
What are the mini triathlons called? I would love to do one
12 years of racing was super exciting
Lionel should stay away from JRE podcast..might end up smoking a joint
Try Norseman or Celtman.
Lionel is a BEAST!
oh man, its me on the thumbnail in the blue suit ahahahah
He will step up to the full Ironman.
Rogan needs to get Lionel Sanders on the podcast.
I don't care how fit anyone thinks they are, go to an ironman event and you will be humbled.
Humbled, but it’s doable
@@AitchT. In the end of the day, anyone can do this if given the time to train. Your family just has to be fine never seeing you 😂
Got humbled bro
Same with mountain ultramarathons. 160km+ with 7000m elevation is crazy.
@@tony7044 people DNF at Ironman competitions despite training for months all the time. The biggest battles at those things are usually more mental than physical imo
Gnarliest athletes out there
Doing my first tri in August! Nervous
Joe rogan should definetely have Lionel Sanders on his podcast
All the best Paul…I am sure u will do wonders there..
Going for my first iron man, from the couch
It’s funny hearing Joe trying to shift a conversation back to a topic (MMA) which has absolutely no correlation to triathlon 😂
he's talking to an ex-MMA fighter.
Nick Diaz does triathlons, too!
and they are both average amateurs. lol
@@timvanmonero2720 can't be great at everything.
@@ibbjos08 that's true. but they hyped therself for being legit badass. nick claimed his bike that got stolen was worth 50k$. when it was 12k$ at best. lol
@@timvanmonero2720 why would Nick lie?
@@barryrockefella nobody knows. fact is, his 2009 cervelo or whatever it was, was a 12k$ bike at best. even today, you cannot have 50k$ bike and 15 years ago even less of a chance. you can absolutely max out your triathlon bike at ~15k$, with custom 3d printed cockpit you really can't go above 20k$. it's impossible.
yes, he made up shit. as usual.
they are also barely average and not world class. lol.
HAHAHAAAA Lionel got me too homie
We want to hear about what Paul eats during his triathlon!
Apparently nothing if he loses ten pounds
Good luck getting on the podium.
right, I am waiting to be in 50-54, then maybe I'll have a slight chance :)
Gonna be my first 70.3 tri in September 2024, wish me luck 😂
5K > marathon > Iron-Man
depends on how fast you do them. just because its longer distance doesn't make it better. BTW I've done them all. IMO running a fast marathon "hurts" you the most.. Usually in the marathon within an IM...you aren't running fast enough to do the damage that you do in an open marathon... this is specific to most age groupers.. pro's run the 26.2 very fast...so for them IM likely hurts > open marathon. I've run
@@jlafren42 exactly why I'm saying the 5k is better than the marathon or ironman
@@jlafren42 Niiiice times bro!! By far impressive af!
@@jlafren42nice thats fast. Are you on testosterone at that age? You better not be as that is cheating if you ain’t a pro.
@@jacklauren9359 absolutely not! I'm a pharmacist and have been able to resist starting any RX drugs until 58th birthday, just started an alpha blocker for BPH. The more you know about prescription drugs the less you will ever want to use them, certainly not electively. You definitely don't want to go down the TRT rabbit hole either, it can become a life long requirement.
Power Sporting thumbnail!
Just do sprints
He will never be a pro…even winning age groups is insane fast and will never happen. And yes I’m an experienced Ironman athlete.
I must say I was impressed that he got 6th place AG and 26th place Overall in that 70.3 IM Atlantic. Wasn't expecting that. But ya those elites are just on a phenomenal level.
Jay, cab I ask you for a bit of advice ??
I train 5 or 6 days a week.
I want to do my first triathlon (Ironamm cork) 19 months from now.
My 10km time is about 50 mins. Yes, slow, but that's without pushing myself, just jogging.
Right now I can do a marathon, though slowly.
My goal is to do ironman cork August 2025, 19 months from now.
I plan to build a large base fitness and then the last 12 weeks, do speed workouts.
Do you think it's possible to break 12 hrs if I train hard/smart.
@@na-dk9vmunsolicited advice but get a coach. Best thing ive done in doing IM
An experienced arsehole too it sounds
Never say never, or put limitations on yourself or other. Of course its possible
Ironman is same is triathlons as a triathlete here in Philippines and soldier my soon become a Promen after I serve the Philippines 🇵🇭
Yes Lionel sanders !!!!
Olha o sporting ali na tumb nail 🎉
If Nick Diaz has endurance then I can spar with Mike Tyson. Nick Diaz survives triathlon.
all you need are MONEY and TIMES
Joe Rogan. Oracle of all health doesn't know what a tempo run is..
dang and i am over here just doing 1 hour a day of cardio and being lazy smh
Ironman... ill be doing it til im 80
My first triathlon was an iron man. Yeah, I'm cool
Miller Maria Davis Lisa Thomas Deborah
If you lose ten pounds during a 70.3, you're doing it wrong.
Americans love to exaggerate 😂
I found this guy lionel sanders,…lol dude, he’s way more famous than you pal….
All jokes aside there is going to be some kid that crossed the border in 2023 or 2024 that got lost and fought for his life to be here in America! 🇺🇸
I know this topic of illegals coming to US!
But when you fight just to get here! Wow…I hope this reaches you young man or woman! Welcome to America 🇺🇸
What a fkn badass
Why be bad at 1 sport when you can be bad at 3
You don't lose 10 pounds in a race lol
As a pro triathlete I would love to put my two sense in 😂
yeah...
You only have two senses?
Hey, doofus you spelled it wrong.
Ironman = the Race
Iron Man = cartoon character
IM is the ultimate narcistic sport. Its not a social sport. None of the workouts promote socialization.
All IM athletes only talk about themselves and their next PR....
Biggest secret: Its not hard for elite runners.... Its extremely hard for everyone else...
🤡🤡🤡
It can be a very social sport. I swim with a group and the camaraderie is great. Same goes for group runs. It can be very individual if you want it to be.
The guys an animal of an athlete.
