    One thing to mention about cotton ito is that it shrinks over time with changes in humidity etc, so it will actually get tighter and less likely to be a problem than the synth silk. It also absorbs oils from your hands, self-lacquering into a very disgusting (to anyone else) and very functional wrap. It also has just the right amount of friction, synth silk often being way too aggressive. Ok, that's three things, but hey, whatever.

    Really enjoying your channel! I'm a newbie who recently discovered the world of Katanas by way of my fairly new WWII-era military firearms collecting hobby - decided to purchase some WWII Shin Guntos and that started me down the rabbit hole and expanding my interest into Katanas in general. Learning a great deal from your channel. Recently purchased an entry-level Katana from Lyuesword and another entry-level model from Murasame. Happy cutting!

    Yours is my favorite sword channel. I have a few pieces (two on the way) that you haven't reviewed on your channel before. One is a HuaWei Unokubi Zukuri, and one is a Balaur Arms type XIV arming sword. If you're interested in reviewing them, I live in St Paul so it would be pretty easy to get them to you.

  • @shanewright344
    @shanewright344 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Good vid Matt! Very informative 👍
    I know you mentioned some vendors in the video, but I just want to reiterate for new sword buyers that online vendors such as Ryan Sword, Swords of the Northshire, and JKOO do not actually manufacture the swords they're selling. The swords are functional "imitations" of Japanese katana swords, using a variety of modern steels, and they are manufactured/forged in China - not in Japan.
    This doesn't mean that they are inferior blades, it just means that they are not authentic Japanese swords that have been forged using traditional Japanese smithing methods, materials, and iron ores.
    Japanese katana that have been forged in Japan using historically accurate (traditional) smithing methods are considered national treasures, and getting one can be very difficult, and very expensive - some of these swords have a price tag of $10,000 or more.
    So, if you're new to sword buying, and you don't have a lot of money to spend, online vendors like JKOO and Swords of the Northshire are great alternatives for the average buyer. They're affordable, the swords are functional, their customer service is great, and they provide plenty of options that allow a person to customize the look and performance of a blade.

    I recommend and also sell knives on the side myself and I often get the same question about apocalypse or this or the other and people seem to be dumbfounded by the Majesty of the magical katana. I usually look at them smile and tell them to go buy a cold steel sword machete because they're made out of pretty tough steel and they can take a beating or any reputable tactical sword made out of the right types of steel. Of course most people still have the heart set on katana so I generally them ask them what their budget is and go from there. Also, what they actually plan on doing with the sword including if they're going to be whacking stuff in their backyard what they're going to be whacking and the do's and don'ts of basic sword stuff which some people seem to still think that in this day and age you can still cut through a solid 2 x 4 with one stroke with a magical mythical katana or any other magical mythical sword for that reason which I tell them very plainly they're going to be severely disappointed in and out some money if they try.

    I would love to see more videos on Katanas. I just had my first custom Katana made. The look of it is from a dark era. It's plain and simple with an all black handle a 1095 clay tempered steel blade with hamon and a HM-10 design. The Fuchi & Kashira is all black no design. Habaki/Seppa is brass, TSUBA is all black no design, and no menuki. I wanted this Katana plain and a dark feel but beautiful.

    Stumbled across your vids yesterday and have been going through the vast majority of them pertaining to "functional" Katana. I thank you greatly for the enjoyable "rambling". I also appreciate the work you do to show what the blades you test are capable of and to impart your experience with these swords. I was looking at a Hanwei Practical Plus Elite to start my cutting/tameshigiri learning and, after watching your videos, I am leaning now toward a Ronin Dojo Pro. I already have respect for the blades from Iaido practice so no need for the $50 "learn what I can whack" blade, but still need something that will be forgiving with my beginner cuts into an actual target (ie mats). When I get better and more confident in my strikes, I will likely move up to a Tori Elite. I am now a subscriber :-)

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those cheaper 50$ blades can still be useful in learning things related to cutting even with respect for the blade.
      However the fact you have respect for the blade does mean you can spend more to start.
      I'd say figure out a budget route you're willing to spend on where you can get a mono tempered sword and a clay tempered one. Ones that are rather similar to each other.
      Beaters are still useful for certain times. But having a blade that bends is also useful.

    • @excalibur3311
      @excalibur3311 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're looking for something ideally accommodating and forgiving for bad cuts, look into getting a blade made of 5160 Spring Steel. Spring Steel is highly flexible and will do a considerably better job retaining its shape versus the Carbon Steels after performing a bad cut on a hard object or surface. Further note: If you're going to spend sub $1500, don't get a blade made of folded steel, just get a well known and respected model like Hanwei's Bamboo Mat - it's well liked in the sword community for cutting and tameshigiri.

    I wish totally plain square tsubas were more popular. I like the simple iron too. I would rather have a polished simple tsuba that is strong. There are so many options for ornamental but ironically not a lot for simple shapes. Or even a diamond tsuba like the square since a diamond shape is actually how your knuckles and hand are shaped below the blade, it just makes sense. I like the simple brass ones too. Im not against ornamental ones at all some are even pretty beefy looking. But most just look tacky and youre paying more for tacky bullsht.
    Itd be smart if they used a wrap cloth material than shrunk over time.
    I hate how fuzzy the cotton is and the black is never black. It only looks good tan and brown maybe green like earth tones.
    I just want the sword to be better it doesnt have to be traditional its already not traditional so its like youre skipping all the traditional stuff for looks but also not going to skip traditional stuff for functionality?
    The samurai would 100% not use this bullsht system if they could. If its done perfectly it works anything short of that it doesn't. You could have an amazing blade then lose it all on the thing youre grabbing the fckn blade with lol. Its not smart. At all. It holds the katana back by a lot compared to longswords and rapiers. Traditional $20,000 katana are 100% fine with me. Making a $5,000 95% traditional katana is cool too. But like....were faking traditional and its not done right then the whole thing is just shtty time and time again.
    Eliminate the fckng problem.
    I love cold steels take on grip with the katana machete. Im not saying it has to be that but like have some balls and make something different that works. Im not a fckng 14th century Japanese ARCHER. The katana is a backup sword. If it was a main primary weapon im sure they would have act created a more practical system for its grip.
    I dont see the problem with just having a wood grip and wrapping the wrap INSIDE the wood like shoelaced in a boot, tighten the fck out of it, then cover the knot with the end cap piece whatever its called. If it comes loose you dont take a bunch of sht apart you just retie the very end knot like stitches its like a slip knot style over the whole grip.
    The metal palm thing under the wrap could have metal pins that goes in the holes of the grip holding thd grip to the blade instead of those little two pieces of bamboo or whatever.
    This would keep the palm pieces static as well as the grip. No sliding around. And the whole thing would look essentially the same.
    Also why does no one use nylon strap? Nylon is silky and durable and cheap. Like backpack strap. They have really really nice nylon now.
    I just feel like they knock it out of the park 90% of the time then ruin the whole thing on a giving a sht issue or effort or small %5 non traditional thing like the ENTIRE blade is already not traditional and most of the time doesn't even LOOK traditional? Why is everyone so fckd up about the GRIP lol. Make life easier, fix it ha.

    At the very least at the lowest end of the scale you should at least go 10:45 still that's the weakest and if you go 1060 or steel or 1095 or maybe even 1095 t10 or maybe even some 92 60 that's some good s*** but you want something tough what you can wax something with and it ain't going to break

    I just like a good strong tough sword what's good for fighting because it's better than a baseball bat or a crowbar it is somebody has one a baseball bat or a curbar and you pull out a sword they know that you about the f*** them up anyway I like the use of sword for home defense along with my pistol because once I run out of the six shots out of my pistol I got that sword to whack m************ up with that they break into my home that I live in the hood so I like good steel recently I got a 1095 but I plan on getting a 9260 spring steel one too I think swords are cool as hell and a great weapons and works of art

    Hi Matt, long time follower here. Thank you for the video as always! I bought a kanmuri-otoshi tantō from jkoo last year and I'm very satisfied. My next piece of steel is going to be one of the high end Huawei katanas. I like their tsuka shape better as opposed to CAS hanwei ones. Thank you again for these videos. Keep them coming.

    Personally what I want out of a sword is a good hard beautiful blade what's good for a secondary and battle I mean obviously the guns going to be the first but when you run out of ammo what are you going to do spend 15 minutes reloading or grab your f****** sword and go at it when somebody breaks in your house and you got five n****** trying to come at you it's good to have a backup plan especially when you live in the hood

    Plus instead of lifting weights if you swing that thing about 200 times a day a real sword you going to build some serious muscles for fighting or something you know it's a good alternative to lifting weights

    I’d rather have no hamon rather then a fake wire brushed hamon. If it’s done well then maybe , I recently purchased two Plum Blossom katanas for $107 from Amazon made by handmade sword, they go for over $500 each on the Handmade swords site and after I purchased them from Amazon they jumped up to over $500 on Amazon . Someone clearly messed up . They look like a Hanwei Bushido katana

    I purchased a tanto with a red blade and it looks amazing. Got it for home protection since I’m in a small space a tanto works better for me compared to a katana. For people curious what a red blade tanto looks like, I got it from True Katana and serial number of the tanto is TK-JP-XY20106.

    Well done. The informative & simplistic language used in this video (including your personal preferences) are of "eye-opening" value. One sword, with so many individual components to consider!
    Well done.

    Well I a Martial Artists (karatedo, Aikido, and Taekwondo) and my next blackbelt I want to get is in Japanese sword so I do want something I can cut mats with but also looks great on my wall but I like the look of the folded steel and I don't like a real thick Suka. What would suggest for this scenario?

    Isn't it a plus to get a proper hamon even if not as "durable", as then your sword will be able to bend out of shape, rather then snap/helicopter into your shoulder/head/friend :P Then you can use a tool to bend it back into shape.
