I always like to imagine that someone’s ideal scenario would be based on what they think was flawed in their life as a child. For example, a child that grew up feeling lonely and being lonely would idealize a tight-knit community. And people who grew up in a tight knit community with little privacy or space would be opposed to this by nature. Both ideals would be based on the reality they lived in, but would both be fanciful, and most likely would present consequences very similar to people who plain and flat try to escape reality. It is only the consensus, or at the very least, the combat between these ideals that keeps a balance.

Well, this is from the sequel to this video but ah what the hell here's a sneak peek.
I believe that the show is a representation of how Maxwell Atoms (the creator) sees his own childhood as well as how he chooses to represent his two sides while growing up.
Billy being the actual childhood and ideas of naivety, immaturity and stupidity come together through the lens of suburbia, Mandy being his quiet intellectual side with a developing cynicism of the world, and finally, Grimm a direct enabler and representation of his desires/fascinations for the macabre.
However, I cannot confirm this besides analyzing it through the whole Mark Twain thing of "write what you know".

I really loved that show! It was a satire kid toons, beside Animanics (or some other toons for kids).
It really show you, what happen if the kids made friends with _"The Grim Reaper?"_ It so wholesome! Barely the of the episodes that made me have a nightmare.
Maybe I love they poke fun any stuff in a Kid Friendly Way. It just like Family Guy, but in a kid version way. (If Selth Macfarlane made his original Kid Toons; have the _most_ of the Characters voice be the same.)
I love the movies: Billy & Mandy's Big Boogie Adventures, The Wrath of the Spider Queen.
Also, poking fun at my fears of Spiders! I do wished more kids cartoons could be like this. Instead of thinking be like "always being silly 24/7 hour straight" -type of kids toons.

But in defense of the idealism shown in a lot of newer shows I want to say that kids now are more realistic than ever, they cant hide from the problems of the world or the fact that the world is fucked becouse it's all on their phone. I don't even know how to start, I never realized this hidden lesson in Billy and Mandy, I'm ashamed of myself for not noticing it, because it's a lesson people need nowadays!
You can't force someone to be something they're not, especially if they don't want to. I also adore how you brought up that Steven Universe does the opposite of this lesson, which I totally agree (*cough*thediamondsshouldhavestayedevil*cough*).
I've personally been harmed by both close people and the media we consume when they forced me into being someone I'm not and into situations that make me uncomfortable. I think I finally understand that I loved Billy and Mandy as a child because I might've absorbed that lesson subconsciously. This has become one of my favorite videos, and I thank you so much for bringing up your analysis and conclusions about this show!

I love this show growing up but I got to say and I hope I don’t come off like I in oversensitive manchild, but looking back and re-watching some episodes I don’t find it very funny and I find it very mean spirited but it still holds up as one of my favorite childhood cartoons just out of pure nostalgia and source material. This is the show that introduced me to HP Lovecraft and Cthulhu and for that I will always love it.

Really the reason I more of a fan of western animation as a kid is that they tell me that nothing is perfect and that's ok. while anime and mange seem to take more idealized aprooch. Still, I'm glad that they are a lot grayer now.

The Beetlejuice musical said it best, "Nietzsche was right, you know, to live is to suffer, bro", which was its way of saying just because life sucks it doesn't have to be all doom and gloom but you shouldn't try to force happiness on others.
