Met Les once in the Empire bar during pantomime season. I was a serving PC in Liverpool at the time in charge of the kids of serving officers from F division. I was in the bar and he came in dressed as Widow Twankey. Just the two of us. Ever stopped laughing for 30 minutes!😊 Anyway when he went back on stage he told the kids I was in charge of to get their heads down for the night as their chaperone was pissed in the bar!!
Maybe one or two minor details might be wrong, I’m old now, but i will always be proud of that memory. A wonderful man.

23:50 "Have you had the shish kebab?" "Ever since we arrived". Completely classic!

Les had so much skill and so much presence; he could just stand on the stage and, without saying a word, with just a look or a glance, make you laugh in anticipation. His performances on The Good Old Days are absolute classics!

Absolutely, he's still good now we're awash in middle class biege safe bast&ds at the moment.
But, yeh, presence he was the ideal choice for blankety blank.

Dawson: the face that launched a thousand expats!
With his piano playing, it wasn't just that every fifth or sixth note would be off key, but that the deliberate choice of ''wrong'' notes were perfectly crafted to garuntee a laugh. Genius.

As a young lad I would wait in great anticipation for Les to come onto the telly, or listen to his Radio show on a Saturday. He was my most favourite comedian of all time, and still is. His passing was as though a member of my family had died. I was gutted. A genius. A legend.

My parents were born in collyhurst …My father was the youngest of 15 and they lived in a two up and two down,,, coal fire ..no hot water…and my mother came from a family of seven……. They were all immaculate …that all went out into the world and achieved great things…. Unbelievable..How things have changed…..

One of my all-time heroes of comedy :-) He also wrote a very nice science fiction novel, too, was a boxer in his youth, a pianist in a Paris brothel and so much more. Loving seeing him again, with his wonderful sense of humour and that wonderful face that could make you laugh without him needing to say a single word :-)

Roy Barrowclough was actually a shirtlifter in real life, so this role suited him.

Superb, old school comedian, without being racist or sexist.

I met him in Wolverhampton many years ago at the theatre bar. the matinee performance of a Pantomime. and just wanted to say how much I loved him as a comedian.
i timidly touched him on the shoulder and said, ''Mr. Dawson? '' He turned and said, ''Do I owe you any money?''I said No.... and he replied, '' Do you want to borrow any money?'' I said no..''In that case, I AM the right honorable Les Dawson.''and asked if we were coming to the afternoons performance.
'' Take my advice and don't ! I have no idea who I am supposed to be, and I make all my lines up in the afternoon anyway.. '' it was as if I was talking to an old friend.
Well we did go of course, and he was superb... as usual.

I'd take this mans comedy before any comic alive today. it's just not in the same class. We thank the internet for hooking us up with the classic comedians of yesterday

Dawson, Dodds, Manning, Freddie Starr, Cooper, Benny Hill, Milligan, and Sellers, you'll never see their likes again. We all now live in a PC world. Todays comics in the main, with the odd exception, are rubbish.

100%. I’m only 57 so was very thing at the height of most of these but I live in the past. Today comics are so afraid to offend their comedy is often talking about one subject - themselves. And that’s an act that gets old very very quick.

Honestly. Bit tacky of this doco to term Les’s wife as ‘widow’. Why not just ‘wife’
