Exactly. I'm sorry l only came across him this week. He was very talented. I don't normally follow stand up comedy but l just can't get enough of him. Makes my day. I love his sense of humour and his accent. I'm an Aussie. I'd pay to see him. I know he's past now but his memories are with us forever. I've actually shared a few with my kids. RIP Bernard. You're a legend. Thanks for the memories.

I'm glad I watched these vids. They gave me a good honest insight into who B M was. I used to take it to heart in the 70s as a young black guy, and loads of racists saw this as an opportunity to offload their hatred. But now, I don't believe in any way that B M was racist. There's absolutely no doubt that he was funny. He was very funny, and quick with it too. When I look at his charitable works and generosity then that's enough to speak in his favour.

You can tell the way he comes across off screen and audio how his family comes across. It's a shame it's so PC now. My take on humour is that it strips away the taboo on any subject, and forces it into the light. Nothing, and I do mean NOTHING should be so sacrosanct that it can't be the subject of humour. A great example would be Chris Brass's Brass Eye mockumentary on paedophiles; it addressed the hysteria that surrounds the subject matter without belittling the seriousness of it.
There's also a distinct line between taking the piss out of someone, and belittling them. I'm a white man with a black fiancee, and neither of is shy about cracking a joke about our respective racial stereotypes. You can always 'choose' to be offended, but you're missing the point entirely.

    • @herseem

I've been in similar situations; the intent is also a big part of it. If you're close to each other you can make jokes - like banter at work - about things that you wouldn't accept from people you aren't already close to.

Anyone with a objective mind should be able to see that he was a gag king. Anything for a laugh that doesn’t mean to say his morals and values reflect his comedy. He was right he was born and brought up in a far less political correct society than we have today. Is he a bad man? no he was making a living and hearing those close to him all speak highly of his generosity to those he cared for. I don’t think he meant any of his gags they were a revenue stream that’s it!

The jokes aren't based on, 'hate.' Humour is a great leveller in that no-one is above having the piss taken out of them. It's far better that people have the humility to laugh at themselves, as well as everyone else, than to have, 'untouchables', who are regarded as above such things. It creates division within society, whereas accepting that having the piss taken the same as everyone else makes us truly equal.

Looking at all these comments MR Manning would be delighted that his fans are still laughing and still united in humor . I had the pleasure of seeing MR Manning in the Isle of Man at the Villa Marina 1988 and he literally brought the house down , We missed the next 4 jokes laughing ourselves silly at the first 1st joke …..To this day his humor is still misunderstood and as his son rightfully stated , it's an act . MR Manning made fun of everyone , none more than himself .God Bless you MR Manning .PS , Fuck Off Esther R .

Loved Bernard Manning. Just pure Quality. Esther Rantzen is a Pure Hypocrite knowing herself what Jimmy Saville was up to and her being the mother of Child Line.....
