The fact the devs got licensing for ALL those heavy metal songs is amazing all on its own, seriously you could turn the game on and just listen to the ultimate collection of heavy metal they've assembled. It actually helped me discover a number of classic heavy metal bands I had never heard about before.

I don't care what people say, this game was so good. I knew it would be one of my favorite games from the moment I saw the first commercials, and I loved every second of playing it. It needs a sequel!
All the best games from back then really deserve sequels we may never get. It's a miracle that we got Destroy All Humans and Battle for Bikini Bottom. And thanks to Actiblizz and WoW, I will never see a Metal Arms 2 again in my life.
It does...but unfortunately Double Fine has stated that they will NOT make a sequel. Eventho Jack was fully onboard with making a sequel. Edit: just found that Tim Schafer has stated that there is a possibility for a BL2, but it's a very tricky situation for them to be in wether to make a game HE wants, or make game that the FANS wants. This was an article from 2021.
The fact no game has picked up the formula this game laid out is crazy to me. So much Character, so unique. So metal. Sequel is much needed. I just hope we see it at some time in my lifetime, kind of like the Blade Runner sequel.
The licensing was so expensive with the music and not including the dialogue costs for the actual singers they brought in. I would love to see a sequel with perhaps more bands like Five Finger death punch and stuff but I don't believe it'll ever happen sadly.
The most memorable thing about this game was the videogame awards show of 2009. Jack Black won best actor and tried to give his GotY speech, and when realizing they werent nominated for GotY he destroyed the podium with his trophy and was escorted out by security
Did you not play the first doom from like 2016? The whole track was done by metal guitarist I believe and he custom made the music to rest to whatever the player is doing prolly one of the most badass soundtracks ever made for a game. And I never even played it and I know that.
To this day, 13 years later, it's easily still my favorite game of all time. It was 100% perfection. Fuck it, I'm installing it again and am going to complete it again for the 6th time
I still play it , and didn't realize till like last month when you play online with people on your team they're literally just you but in a different outfit which is a cool concept with extra detail into a character with an already pre thought out design
Bro pls answer me this. I started replaying it for like the 5th time and I noticed when escorting lars and ophelia to the kill master you can see severed arms stuck in the webs and all the arms are the exact same as eddies. No one else in the game has the bracelets and arm bands as Eddie so im curious as to whether or not it was intentional and means something else or if it was just them re using assets. What do you think?
The concept has prospect even if it had a few rough edges here but you feel the love and passion of the devs. Very unique concept and cool ideas even if not every one of them landed.
@OLD____yeah this. I was shocked when it became an RTS. Nothing against the genre but a game like this demands some hack and slashery and the fact it isn’t made super clear from the get go feels… a little deceptive.
@@AnimatedTerror it was made clear. Tim from day 1 was developing action/RTS, it's in all interviews. When EA bought over the studio, they started making demands to turn the whole game into GoW clone and based their false marketing on that. But you guys always love and trust EA😅
@@TheArklyte I don't think anyone has ever loved or trusted EA. I certainly didn't. I didn't even know about this game till after its release and got bummed when I heard it was a RTS.
Ah yes the golden times, times in which game devs still dared to take actual risks. A time in which a game with a stupid concept like this could have a whole lotta love poured into it. I really, really miss those times
Omg finally someone covered it, i grew up with this game and in my opinion its one of the best underrated games of all time and its voiced by Jack Black im so glad you made a vid about it i tought it's been lost to time.
This games soundtrack is fucking incredible, I had never listened to Heavy Metal before I played this (I was 14). It had a significant effect on my taste in music throughout high school
As a Metalhead, the cameos from Metal Royalty were a treat in this. I've completed it a few times over the years, and it's been a few years since I last played it, so this has gotten me in the mood for another blast of METAL MAYHEM!!!!!
Seriously, not having music hurts. The soundtrack is amazing, and it changes in real time to different segments of a given song. For example, the opening area with the cultists has Children of the Grave play but only the opening guitar until you grab the axe. Then the whole song kicks in. Rock of Ages plays during the revolution, and it plays as if it were being broadcast over a loudspeaker. This game freaking rules.
You see the inspiration for this game is that one day Jack Black and his brother Kyle were hitchhiking down a long and lonesome road when all of the sudden, there shined a shiny demon in the middle of the road.
Oh, absolutely. "Realistic" games often lack personality and sometimes even substance. As a matter of fact, the RTS sections in the video reminded me of another good game with its own style - Overlord series. Had interesting gameplay, too, albeit nowadays it's a bit dated, but that's an old game, after all. Or Deep Rock Galactic - simple, stylish and memorable, but that's one of the newer ones. Hand-crafted animations and unique style can give so much personality to the project it's quite amazing
Stylized intends to aged pretty well since it’s about the artistic portrayal, rather than the full on realism. Remember that game years ago, Heavenly Sword? It looked good when it came out, now it’s all ugly as sin.
And this video is only a tiny fraction of the artistry that went into this game. I remember even grabbing all the collectibles and there's a whole Ormagoden creation myth sequence in another art style. Not to mention all the unit designs with so many fun little details. It also has really impressive environmental design - each area looks very distinct and beautiful yet has similar elements, like relics of ancient rock music aesthetic lying broken or overgrown all over the place.
Yeah it's much more charming imo. Up until unreal engine 5 all the "realistic" animations even in high budget games like RDR2 gave me weird uncanny valley vibes at times.
a weird game gameplay-wise, a beautiful game world- lore- personality- and MUSIC-wise. The love for the world shines through like the blazing fires borne from the Hot Rods of the Titans.
Well lets look at it this way... Would you prefer a "perfectly safe game" like whatever the lastest assassins creed was... Or this game.... Thats what i thought. "perfect" games are seldom "AMAZING" games...
Ahh, that was such a good time when I discovered Brütal Legend and Metalocalypse at roughly the same time. It's a shame that there isn't so much anymore with this over-the-top Metal humor, both really have their charm
Kev, cant thank you enough to cover this underrated gem of a game with your unique charisma and style. But damn is it an ABSOLUTE crying shame that to avoid the tyrannical copy strikes and demonitizations you have to leave out the absolute best feature of the game: it's soundtrack! it's one thing for the legendary tracks selected, but another with when and HOW they're implemented! I mean, damn, the intro with Children of The Grave being played in increasing levels was the best intro I ever saw. to have it on mute....ah, my soul doth weep tears of sorrow.
@@Kevduit also need to mention that in the RTS phases each stage/faction has its own tracks, that get louder as you near the stage but also spreads at the same time as the territory controlled by each. Meaning you can know if an area is under enemy control just by their soundtrack taking over when you enter their turf.
@@Kevduit just Google the list of songs 107 I think Best soundtrack ever You definitely have to play it with the music on Sometimes I would just drive around aimlessly to listen to songs 😂
So many moments are better with it. I won't say what the scenes are but the scenes with Mr Crowley and Through the Fire and the flames are just amazing
I used to play this game with my childhood friend, we would play after school on multiplayer and have crazy battles, army vs army.. it was insane. This game is awesome.
This game is so freaking good! The humor, the setting and the characters are all spot on and the whole game really embodies and exudes the true spirit of metal🤘
@@glowdonk Haha that's fair😅 Personally I've yet to play a game I dislike from Double Fine, they are great at creating and including captivating stories and interesting mechanics and ideas in their products!
I loved all of that The RTS gameplay killed it for me. I was all set for a hack and slash adventure, but the poorly implemented RTS portions made it aggravating to continue the story. I enjoy RTSs, but the way this was implemented felt horribly sloppy, which really sucks for this game. Pretty much everything else about this game is AWESOME! I really hate that one mechanic ruined it for me, but it was a core mechanic that was not allowing me to continue and basically every single fight after the first half of the game is an RTS, so I couldn't continue. I'm used to the Command and Conquer series (never was able to play generals. I couldn't ever get it to work on my computer) as well as planetary annihilation, so maybe it was the extremely different control scheme that killed it for me. This game feels like Jack Black's version of "Army of Darkness" though lol, and I love it.
@@CreativityNull Sad that the RTS parts didn't click for you, but funny enough it started as a multiplayer game and the single player parts were added after as an tutorial and then it just grew into it's own thing, so the single player parts are actually just the after thought and not vice versa 😂 haha It even still have a somewhat competitive online community and the creators still play it online every year on the anniversary of release from what I know. The RTS parts are actually somewhat solid mechanic wise when you play online since the other "factions" (Ironheade, Drowning Doom, Tainted Coil) have their own strengths and unusual units. Although the first tutorial fight with General Lionwhyte before you get the ability to fly with Eddie/JB can be a bit of a drag since your bound like all other the groundwalkers which lower you visibility of and movement on the battle field significantly😅 In single player you can cheese those parts a bit if you got the facemelter solo outside the spider queen lair first, because that insanely kill most enemies around you so you could just drop Eddie into the enemies like a hot knife through butter.
Ophelia’s poem still gives me shivers Through the woods a girl came sadly. Something broken in her chest. She had dared to love another. Alas, no better than the rest. Up my path the girl came gladly. Something opened up my doors. I longed to stop her bleeding heart. And so I called her to my shores. Those you trust will hurt you badly. Something now I'm sure you see. So drown your tears in me, my dear. As you drown, my dear, in me… Game was great & it had the best soundtrack ever Shame you couldn’t play the music
Probably having to get the versions of all those license to do a 'soundtrack CD' like GTA did for its radio stations would have been prohibitive. OTH, there's the quick & dirty solution of just parking the Plow someplace quiet and letting the 'radio' run while you do something else.
@@_Tzer oh yeah most definitely I only referred to it as Ophelia’s poem cause that’s how it’s known but the poem itself is Aetulia calling for her to drown her tears (& herself) in the sea of black tears
I’m so happy you enjoyed the “Experience” that is Brutal Legend. They were gonna have DLC, but it didn’t sell well enough. Which I hoped would mean a 2nd game… Someday.
No, we got dlc, just not a story expansion. Just more online maps. Allegedly if psychonauts 2 does good enough we might get one. Sucks double fine is so tight budgeted.
Psychonauts 2 did pretty great, and there was a few Brutal Legend easter eggs connected to one of the characters, so I'm pretty hopeful for the sequel's chances
Yeah it does. Probably for the best though, Lemmys gone, Ozzy is getting on in years and showing it on a mental level, plus with everything going up, can you imagine how much it would cost to get another setlist of Heavy Metal tracks together?
I just don't think it'd be nearly the same. Double Fine's team has changed so much since this game releases, I feel like it would just end up a shell of the original. Too many investors and publishers fingers in game development nowadays.
@@TheClosch I don't then the Double Fine team would really be the issue, it would be how do properly follow up Brutal Legend? The game is absolutely amazing but it didn't really leave itself open for a compelling continuation, which isn't a complaint it is great that the story of Brutal Legend wraps up it's story well enough the only compelling story to explore is what happened before but a story on the Black Tears Rebelion would feel like a copy and paste cash grab.
I dove into this when it came out and I loved it. Don't care about any of whatever shortcomings people think it had. It had a great story, laugh out loud humor, awesome musical soundtrack, and metal music references & themes all over the place. Honestly, if anything deserves a sequel, it's *BRUTAL LEGEND* .
This game is truly the work of Örmogodden himself, for only the true strength of metal shall withstand the fire and blood created by the noise within it's sick as hell soundtrack. 1000/1
This game shaped my music interests when it came out, that sound track is genuinely insane I still can't believe they got the licence for all of it. It's honestly a good game still to this day! Glad you got around to playing it
This game holds a special place in my heart despite feeling a little cheated at the time due to the RTS stuff being heavily glossed over in marketing and promotion. The idea of a heavy metal world where locations are inspired by album covers will be forever cool to me. The world building was so fun and the driving was pretty satisfying too I wish there were more ambitious passion project games like this nowadays
Man, all these years later but I just realized, you could say that the characters were inspired by Tim Burton and I'd believe you. Jesus how much money did Double Fine actually lose making this game with all the licencing and VA work? This game really was special. And gave you a lot really.
The fact youre constantly putting out solid content is amazing dude, honestly its always nice to know that i can look forward to a bad ass kevduit video after a day of some flavor.
This was one of my favorite games during this era of gaming. I played it so much. I really wish they’d do a rerelease of it. I think what killed it was a bunch of reviews from gaming reporters who just couldn’t stand a game trying something different gaming modes, like how it switched between hack n slash, and RTS. Like I even recently heard another TH-camr rip on it for this. Not even whether or not that it was good or bad, he was just mocking it for having a different mode from the straightforward hack n slash. While I wouldn’t defend it as a masterpiece, I do think this game deserved better than what it got because it was still overall fun, even with the switch between modes.
You can also blame actual demo not showcasing the RTS side of it properly. A lot of people went into it expecting it to be a hack and slash and just heard "it's actually an RTS" and thought that meant that the hack and slash part either disappeared or was not a part of the actual game, since the demo ended long before any RTS elements actually showed up. This is unironically why I never bothered with it.
The reviewers killed it... This is the most niche game I ever played and it's incredible it even exist in first place, and even more incredible it's the fact people who liked it don't get why it failed... Never try to make a niche game with licenses specially music licenses...
I'm so bloody nostalgic now. I honestly think this game is incredible. Totally ahead of it's time. Brilliant story, really great music, fun combat. I even like the wierd RTS elements. I honestly would back a remaster. Great video.
With games like this, even if they don't stick the landing I cant find it in my heart to dislike them because they have so much soul and true passion put into them by the creators
You cannot make a game like this anymore in the west. Western culture is complete garbage now. 2009 was a much better time. Case and point this game. Now you have to look towards the East for quality games.
@@mr.dikovitch5524 Because everything is political. Which isn't necessarily w bad thing. Fallout new Vegas is political to it's very core. The difference is the game doesn't tell you which are the "good" and the "bad" guys. Or what side is in the right. It's up to the player. Nowadays games want to tell you what you have to feel. The fact that everything about the story is dogshit is irrelevant. Just look at The last of us 2. What an good awful game this was. But remember you are homophobic for thinking it's a bad game.
@@requiemagent3014 yeah, there's no neutrality or multiple perspectives anymore like in New Vegas, every story is so bland and Black and White that any nuance is removed

@@kamiya4700 to be fair, the "True ending" was supposed to be just the secret ending of the original game, they just added more chapters when capcom cancelled the sequel since the first one didn't sold well, so they used the written sequel to make the dlc
I don't understand how people could hate the RTS parts of this game, you're on the ground with your troops, fighting with your axe, guitar, and car, as well as whatever double teams you bother with using. as far as i know, every other RTS just has you being a camera in the sky telling your group wherever to go.
That's kinda the problem it's too much shit going on to keep track of I never finished this game because I couldn't beat the last rts part I still love it though lol
Thing is most ppl try to play it like a traditional hack n slash and don't spam the fuck outta solos. "Face Melter" is fast af and literally melts the faces off of everyone it touches
@@beershits9340 just finished it today, actually found some good strategies online for the rts parts and managed to beat the final rts part on my third try. pretty much patience, upgrading your basic fighters and stage and then attack the heads with the big tank and your car while everyone else is protecting the fans...and lots of solo uses. Hit me back when you play it and let me know what you think. If you can get past older design and controls, you'll love it. The biggest appreciation I has was there is a band I just couldn't stand and never gave them a chance; I had a tough time with a mission and by the time I finished, it turned into one of my favorite songs on the game as it kept looping until I completed it. @@NPK476 honestly, I think it's the cast that I love the most, Heavy Metal royalty mixed with staples of the VA industry! especially since some of them have passed since the game's release
This game bleeds effort and love and passion from every pore. They didn't need to film a live action intro sequence with a literal live-action immersive main-menu system complete with artwork. But they did. They didn't need to invent a fake boy band of faux nu-metal to annoy us. But they did. They didn't need to license an amazing collection of very expensive and legendary songs along with some niche tracks to intrigue- BUT, THEY, DID. They didn't need to make the swearing and gore settings both immersive and funny prompts, but they did. So many little details.
I love this game so much, I bought it in 2020, 11 years after it came out, I play it now more than any other modern game I have, the gameplay, soundtrack, scenery and world all make it so special. ITs an awesome experience and its a shame that it didn't sell well but in a way that niche and rarity make it even better. Its an underrated one of a kind game and I always get pleasures going back to it every now and then. Rock on!
I actually no joke love this game. Since im a RTS fan but damn was the final few endings utterly Ball crushingly Diffcult, They was So hard! and.... Well Brutal. I also remember how when they advertised the game it was always Clips of the RPG elements Like Eddie in the Mosh pit, The intro Scene, Scenes with the Car. So when people played it and found out it was Really a RTS they was utterly confused xD
As a proud enjoyer of shitty, self aware humor, aswell as good music and Lemmy Kilmister cameos, I really gotta tell y'all, we need more game like that real fast. What do u play it on? Asking for a match up
Bro pls answer me this.
@@chunky_mustard5312 I think it is just assets, I don't thinks there's a secret behind the arms sadly, I noticed it too and thought, huh that's weird.

When I played this game, I had no idea it would slowly turn into a weird hybrid RTS game. But it was a pleasant surprise.

The voice cast on this game is legendary. This game deserves all the praise. Its just so damn fun.

Oh man the animation is good. I love when games decide to be stylized instead of ultra realistic. Hand animations are snappier and I love that
Oh, absolutely.
This game isn’t perfect. But the pure character and love that went into it makes it a masterpiece in my eyes. I will forever love this game.
Did you see the crossover they did?
Try Metal Dead and Deathbulge: Battle of the bands. Both have humor and metal, former is a point and click adventure and latter is a turn based rpg.
I feel like the metal fandom is stronger among millennials and gen x'ers ä.
I ABSOLUTELY have to go back to replay this with sound, honestly hurt my soul to have to mute to make content on it
@@Kevduit also need to mention that in the RTS phases each stage/faction has its own tracks, that get louder as you near the stage but also spreads at the same time as the territory controlled by each. Personally I've yet to play a game I dislike from Double Fine, they are great at creating and including captivating stories and interesting mechanics and ideas in their products!
I loved all of that
The RTS gameplay killed it for me.
@@CreativityNull Sad that the RTS parts didn't click for you, but funny enough it started as a multiplayer game and the single player parts were added after as an tutorial and then it just grew into it's own thing, so the single player parts are actually just the after thought and not vice versa 😂 haha
It even still have a somewhat competitive online community and the creators still play it online every year on the anniversary of release from what I know.
The RTS parts are actually somewhat solid mechanic wise when you play online since the other "factions" (Ironheade, Drowning Doom, Tainted Coil) have their own strengths and unusual units.
Although the first tutorial fight with General Lionwhyte before you get the ability to fly with Eddie/JB can be a bit of a drag since your bound like all other the groundwalkers which lower you visibility of and movement on the battle field significantly😅
In single player you can cheese those parts a bit if you got the facemelter solo outside the spider queen lair first, because that insanely kill most enemies around you so you could just drop Eddie into the enemies like a hot knife through butter.
Ophelia’s poem still gives me shivers
Through the woods a girl came sadly.

She had dared to love another.
Alas, no better than the rest.
Up my path the girl came gladly.

I longed to stop her bleeding heart.
And so I called her to my shores.
Those you trust will hurt you badly.
Something now I'm sure you see.
So drown your tears in me, my dear.
As you drown, my dear, in me…

Probably having to get the versions of all those license to do a 'soundtrack CD' like GTA did for its radio stations would have been prohibitive. OTH, there's the quick & dirty solution of just parking the Plow someplace quiet and letting the 'radio' run while you do something else.
Some say it isn't ophelia but Aetulia.
@@_Tzer oh yeah most definitely
I only referred to it as Ophelia’s poem cause that’s how it’s known but the poem itself is Aetulia calling for her to drown her tears (& herself) in the sea of black tears

That transition from combat to cutscene at 6:15 is actually crazy and something I’ve never seen in a video game before.

Just like the in-game record at the opening of the game Brutal legend appeared in my house without anyone knowing I asked my mum and she didn’t remember buying I told my brother he said he didn’t buy it
the game just appeared am convinced this game is actually magic or a gift from god Himself
You had a missed opportunity with this playthrough of Brutal Legend.
The brutality is amped up to 1000 when a Rock Band guitar is used as the game's controller.
I think 5 years ago I watched a video containing all the cutscenes of the game and only now remember how awesome it was. Somewhat inspired a very small metal phase.
Holy cow thanks for doing this. (Almost a year ago) This got a million people to see this and I'm sure it probably raised the copy sells to go up by a bit. I also cant tell you how thankful I am, this game was my childhood in which I mean I played it like 10 times before I got past the big wormy dude when I was around 5. Its also a little heart breaking to see the hours of fun gameplay put into a 27 minute video...
Studio: What genre of game should we make?
Devs: Yes.
Devs: Hold our skull tankards!
The sheer insanity of this game combined with the fact that it turned out great is not something I think we will ever see again. You can tell 1000000% that the devs poured their hearts and souls into this game. I must have played through 10 times and still kept finding new eastereggs and cool tributes. I dug it out again when Lemmy died as my own personal way of grieving for the legend.
A must play as far as I am concerned.
i have no words, shits so good i just cant utter any words that describe the feeling of nostalgia im getting by just watching this video.
This is why it's fantastic that Tim Schafer and Jack Black are good friends. I 100 percent am waiting/expecting a sequel
An old GF of mine introduced me to this game. As she said "It has Jack Black, Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister, Lita Ford, and Tim Curry as voice actors! And it's all about guitars, cars, and metal! There is no way you're not gonna love this game!" And she was right
