So, what would you consider a bad game then? Like, just because a game is playable doesn't make it good. I can play Sonic 2006 just fine and I actually 100% it back when it came out but that doesn't mean it's good. It's full of awful, objectively bad ideas and is a mess. Same goes for Bubsy 3D. That said, the Bubsy game on the Jaguar is far worse to the point where I'd say it's easily one of the worst games I've ever played and I don't say that lightly.
I agree Bubsy on Jaguar is one of the worst platformers I have played as well. A bad game to me would be something like Bugriders on PS1. A game that is mechanically broken but also a game that I get zero enjoyment out of. I can enjoy games even if their gameplay merchanics have problems.
PeteDorr " I can enjoy games even if their gameplay merchanics have problems." I can as well, since I actually mostly enjoyed my time playing Sonic 2006, but I don't think that really stops a game from being objectively bad. Maybe we have different opinions on what makes a game bad or not, but I personally don't think a game deserves a free pass simply if I can get some enjoyment from it. If a game has numerous problems with it's gameplay/controls/general design, then it's probably not good, at least imo.
Another thing to consider is what time period a game was released in, and what the context of that time period is. For example, I personally do not enjoy Mario 64. I don't think it's aged well, I find the controls frustrating, and so I don't play it very often. I subjectively think it's not that great based on objective elements of the game, such as the poor controls in comparison to today's standards. Does that make Mario 64 bad? Don't think so. So then by that standard you have to be able to look at a game such as Bubsy 3d and understand the context of the time it came out in and not let your personal enjoyment of the game get in the way of your objectivity, much in the same way that I try not to let mine get in the way of appreciating Mario 64 and understanding that it's an amazing title no matter how poorly it has aged.
I totally believe that the Internet Gaming Community has developed a bit of a Hivemind mentality when it comes to some things; and Bubsy 3D is a perfect example of this. How many people thought this was a bad game before being TOLD they were to think of it as a bad game? Few, I'd imagine. People seem to have a need to be told what to like and what to dislike, instead of trying these things out for themselves. Some of the best memories I have of games involve "going in blind" to a game and finding out it was fantastic!
I don't think it's unreasonable to look up what people think about a piece of entertainment and why before going into something, and not want to try it after hearing horrible things about it. Because honestly, there have been cases where people are saying certain games or movies are really bad, and I went out and tried them, and while on occasion, I can enjoy as guilty pleasures, more often than not, I found them to be tedious wastes of time, so naturally, due to past experiences I'm going to try to be careful in which movies or games would be worth it for my own sake. A lot of times, I try not to go into a bad game just for the sake of it unless it looks like there's a potential amusement factor for me. And unfortunately, I apply that reasoning to why I don't want to try Bubsy 3D. It just doesn't appealing or fun to me. :/ By the way, I think the approach of 'going in blindly' works really well with music samples.
If more people approached "bad movies" and other "bad video games" with the same open mindedness there would be a lot less infighting in the community. I don't agree with all of your points on Bubsy 3D, but I commend you for giving the game a chance and actually examining it to completion. Now that you knocked Bubsy 3D out of the park, it would be cool to see you do an assessment on Final Fantasy: The Spiirits Within.
Before you comment that my opinion is wrong, ask yourself the following questions: 1. Did you watch my video in its entirety? 2. Have you ever actually played Bubsy 3D before? 3. Are you basing your opinion that the game is bad solely on the opinions of others posted online in reviews? I look forward to reading the varying degrees of love and hate for this game in the comments, just keep it civil, thanks.
1 yes watched the video 2. yes I have played the game 3. I have my own opinion Acting like anyone who does not agree has not played the game and just read reviews is pathetic and its childish to act like anyone who disagrees with you can't think for themselves.
I can't figure how you would come to this conclusion from what he said... Of course you could answer the way you did to all those questions and still hate the game. He just wants people to have a decently well informed opinion and not just "This game is garbage because X said so, you're wrong Pete!!!"
"Before you comment on my video "Why drinking gasoline is healthy", ask yourself the following questions: 1. Did you watch my video in its entirety? 2. Have you ever actually drank gasoline before? 3. Are you basing your opinion that drinking gasoline is bad solely on the opinions of others posted online? I look forward to reading the varying degrees of love and hate for this in the comments, just keep it civil, thanks."
Bubsy 3D is actually my favorite game in the series (and the only one that has never frustrated me), and I consider it the best game in the series alongside Paws on Fire! (Which came out recently). I hate when people say is a terrible game because just it isn't. I've cleared Bubsy 3D seven times, and I'm planning to do a series on it. EDIT: Playthrough series has been finished months ago, and I've beaten 100% Bubsy 3D around 12 times, turning it into the #1 game I've fully beaten the most times ever.
I've always enjoyed Bubsy 3D and thought it has a real charm to it. Tons of respect to you for giving the game an actual chance and not jumping on the bandwagon of internet reviewers. You're being honest and fair which is so refreshing to see and you seem to have a genuine passion and respect for video games which I really admire.
Hey Pete! Congratulations on the speedrun. I happen to think it's a wonderful game. At the time of release, Bubsy 3D was well-received by critics and its graphics looked great, especially on the standard TV's of the time (it's not gonna look as good on an HDTV, because of the resolution differences). Bubsy 3D definitely has a unique world and people need to realize that at the time of release, the idea of having a fully-3D world that you can walk around in was amazing back when it released. It would've been seen as amazing back then, when people were still used to playing 2D Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis games. I've never played the game, but having watched your many run-throughs of the game, I can already tell that they really did put a lot of creative effort into it. It's not a game that was slapped together. I enjoy watching the alien characters, the use of Mario-64 like platforming style, and the weird angles that the game makes with the walls and floor as you move around. It creates a weird funhouse mirror effect that makes the game stand out from not only the games that were released at the time, but also from games that come out even today. It basically is a game that stands on its own and is so unique that it doesn't have many other games like it. I'm sure Bubsy 3D probably did have its influences, so I don't think Bubsy attempted to do everything new, but nevertheless, the style in which the 3D graphics and roaming abilities were handled in the game were short-lived and most PS1 games ended up doing 3D graphics and environment planning differently. There is a lot to like about Bubsy 3D. I actually liked the weird voice acting sounds that Bubsy makes. I enjoy the sound effects and the entire space theme itself is great. It's wacky and it provides a justification for all the wacky colors and mechanics in the game. I also enjoy how the bosses look and act and (SPOILERS AHEAD) especially in the end when we see the cheering crowd of people when you beat the game. It looks so over-the-top and overly-emotional and yet so endearing and heartfelt. You rarely see such crazy excitement in characters. It really brings them alive. (END SPOILER) So, what I'm saying is that Bubsy 3D is really an example of something that is retroactively labeled as bad, because the current generation just doesn't understand what was happening in the previous generations. At the time of release, Bubsy 3D had great graphics and also as strange and jumpy as the game is, people at the time had a lot of time in their hands and enjoyed getting good at the game, so much so that even a 6-year-old could get the jumping mechanics just right. In other words, gamers back then had no problem playing these games and would quickly grow accustomed to the controls, which nowadays a lot of people are not so willing to learn, because controls have become so much simpler today and there is this expectation of just playing games for 10 hours and then not playing them again. I feel like Donkey Kong Country is another such game that has gotten the same retroactive bad treatment. At the time of release Donkey Kong Country was seen as an amazing game with outstanding graphics and I remember game stores at the time holding competitions of just Donkey Kong Country and at the mall you would see huge Donkey Kong Country kiosks with full labels and everything. The reason why people don't like Donkey Kong Country today is because the controls are a little weird to get used to (using Y to run, and jumping with X and holding down Y the whole time and using that as a gaming mechanic to allow for long-distance jumping), and a lot of people playing today don't figure out how the game was meant to play and also don't take the time to learn the game. People during the 90's used to play these games for multiple playthroughs. Getting back to Bubsy 3D, your really did play the game as it was meant to be played. That is to say, when you did your Speedrun, you were playing it over and over and learning the mechanics and that's why you were able to enjoy it and you became good at the platforming. You became connected with the game, because you took the time to learn about it. Along the way, you discovered a lot of the interesting quirks and decorations that surrounded the game. That provided you with the experience that the game designers clearly meant to present to the player. That's another thing that these games provided. There is an an entire world that has been crafted and specially designed by hand, that is so uncommon in today's world of open world games in Xbox 1's and PS4's auto-generated, generic forests, hallways, cityscapes. We're capable of great designs in games today, but the focus is more on size and grandness (which is great), but less on the art. Bubsy 3D truly is an artful experience. I love that it attempted to create a new world, and the entire theme of Bubsy in space, just shows that they really wanted to go off on a tangent and provided a quirky one-of-a-kind escapade into a fantasy world that would be hard to recreate in a movie or book format. It's almost like pouring into the imaginations of game designers of the 90's who were very excited about using the 3D environments for the first time, and obviously had a very unique take on how the angling and camera and look of the game should be. Bubsy 3D is a great game and I'm glad you played it.
I actually played Bubsy 3D when I was a kid and found it at least good enough to complete, definitely not something I remember fondly but definitely not unplayable or close to the levels of something like Dr Jekyll. I still don't think it's good though, average, yes, not good.
I only owned a demo which had Bubsy 3D's first level. I played the crap out of it. I wanted the full game but the one time I went to Gamestop to get it, they didn't have it. I knew the many things that were wrong with it, but I didn't care I liked it for what it was. Also enjoyed Croc: Legend of the Gobbo's.
Thank you for hitting one of my BIGGEST Pet Peeves Pete - And that's when people review games without playing the entire game. You can truly tell when someone has actually played a game when they review it or not and it irritates the hell out of me. I've always wondered if Bubsy 3-D was overly hated, because I also like some games that fall under that like FF Mystic Quest. I never have had a chance to play Bubsy 3-D, but if I ever do I will go into it with an open mind. Good video on calling people out on their BS!
Game Galaxy That's kind of like saying that a food critic shouldn't give a restaurant a bad rating because _only some_ of his meal had literal dog shit in it and everything else was just bland and suffering from varying degrees of mediocrity.
You are drawing the entirely wrong conclusions imo. The game is still absolutely and in many cases objectively awful. You just enjoyed parts of it. I enjoy plenty of terrible movies for one reason or another, that doesn't make them good movies in the classical sense though
Pete has always had a disposition towards enjoying "underdog" aspects of video game culture. He seems very counter culture when it comes to this industry as a whole, and that is very important to consider when watching this video.
DigitalAnthony so essentially hipster logic. Listen, not that i don't think some games get bad raps and think they are great games and all, but the way he went at it was just so pompous and hipster in nature
That's why I don't listen to Reviews and form my own opinion by playing the game for myself. Like a game on the Wii called Gunslingers. There are only a few reviews on it and they said it sucked even though they only played through the first stage. I have almost beat the game and it's amazing fun with great graphical style and great music. The game play is also amazing with some of the best 4 player co-op I have ever seen. I never have played Bubsy 3D that's why I don't hate on it. Bubsy for the SNES though I have beat and that's a pretty good but very difficult game.
Railshooter's in general get the shit. Ninja Assault on PS2 didn't have the worst reviews but it did get mostly low ones eventhough it's really fun. It's probably most hectic railshooter out there and it will really kill your fingers but it's still a blast.
I'm going to have to give a hard 'You're wrong' on this one. I have played it, and it is bad, even by the standards of it's time. You essentially have a platformer that uses resident evil tank controls to maneuver around a blank, empty, personality-less world with an incredibly annoying character. If you like him, that's fine, be he is truly nails on a fucking chalkboard. And your argument that it's justifiable because 'there were no other 3D platformers at the time!' doesn't make it excusable. As has been stated before, Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot came out at the same time and did literally everything better in every way humanly possible. Nearly any game is playable if you play it enough. The Slaughtering Grounds is playable if you play it enough. It doesn't not make it bad. The point with the lives should have illustrated what I'm talking about: You shouldn't have to sit there and farm for lives to make the game 'good'. That is, at best, poor game design and, at worst, symptomatic of a lot of different elements of bad game design. They may not have had a point of comparison, but that doesn't automatically mean their attempt to innovate was functional, much less good. In addition, you're being really condescending. You state repeatedly that you think everyone's been brain washed and it's just insulting. We're not brainwashed, it's just garbage. It isn't the worst game ever, but it is by no means good.
Codex Entry As was stated, Bubsy 3d was in development before sm64 and crash were even announced. Hopefully you hate Croc and first Tomb Raider as well, which used "resident evil tank controls" as well.
Croc and Tomb Raider were built around tank controls, Bubsy 3D wasn't, Bubsy 3D was open world like Super Mario 64 and as a result, the Tank Controls are terrible in Bubsy 3D specifically I never played Bubsy 3D and I'm not touching it
I am one of the few that liked Bubsy on the SNES. I remember before getting my SNES I use to go into the Game Exchange in Kitchener and would watch gameplay and try the first level of the game over and over and over it's one of the games I wanted the most on the SNES with Super Mario World. When I finally bought got the SNES Mini I was like I need Bubsy. I have never played Bubsy 3D I didn't have an N64 or PS1 I was still rocking out the SNES. I am glad you decided to make this I feel so many reviews on youtube can be people just puling a game and never really experiencing it. What I mean by that is people are not sitting down and enjoying the game but focused more on reviewing something because it's talked about. I watched a review today where someone say that Trails in the Sky on the PSP didn't have much of a story and just laughed.
Thanks Pete for inspiring me to give this game a try. I beat it yesterday and agree with pretty much everything you say especially about the unwarranted bashing it receives and the brainwashed attitude from those who haven't played it. I also lurked in your stream after beating it and watched you take 2nd place in the speedrun world record. Congrats! One thing I'd like to point out though is that in the previous Bubsy stream you mentioned that this is the first 3rd person / 3D platformer. It's actually not. Floating Runner was released before this in January 1996. You might enjoy that also if you haven't played it. It's much harder than Bubsy though and has a very SEGA feel to it, like it would be more at home on the Saturn even though it's a PS1 exclusive.
Same goes for 3D platformer Ninjabread Man. I bought it just so I could say that I'd played one of the most hated games ever made, but it wasn't terrible. It was boringly mediocre, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it'd be. The controls were okay, the levels were okay - it was all just okay. Still not GOOD, but I don't get why people say it's the worst ever, because it really isn't. Like Bubsy 3D, I feel like it's one of those games that people hate because the internet hates it. It's a vicious cycle of perpetual hate of like "people hate it for a good reason, so I hate it too!". It doesn't deserve any love whatsoever, but not that much hate.
I think a game can be enjoyable even if it has technical issues.. the reasons for which somebody enjoys a game can be so many and different, and that's the reason why we all have a subjective point of view about games (and about everything). On the other hand there are objective problems in the game that cannot be denied, but in this case Pete doesn't say "they don't exist", he says "they don't ruin the gaming experience", or at least, "they don't make this game the worst game of all time". So THANK YOU Pete for this video. I really appreciated it!
I have now bought the game a played a lot of it and have to say that the gameplay is pretty good, very impressive for an early open 3D platformer. The only broken thing is the enemy hit detection. However, even though the level design isn't too Bad either, it's completely lacking when it comes to atmoshere and personality (in most levels, excluding the pretty good water levels). Bubsy has personality, but the levels don't. There are no evironents, just shapes thrown into space. It's a pretty enjoyable platforming challenge, which I like. No fancy atmospheric Forest Levels, just jumping on platforms. Most people seem to dislike the simplicity.
"I actually enjoyed this game" "NO YOU'RE OBJECTIVELY WRONG" I'm glad Pete's making videos again. I don't think I'd enjoy this game but if Pete did then why are so many people mad about it.
Glorious way to return. Welcome back and some famous guy once said that every unanimity is dumb. im not sure that i agree 100% with that but when its about ideas and opinions, its always good to have a counterpoint.
I actually found this game in a charity shop for £2 (about $3-$4), and I'm playing through it myself, currently, and so far, I wouldn't say the game was bad or good, I'd call it average, I could get used to the controls seeing that other games of the time used the same tank controls, like Croc and Tomb Raider, but I feel like the controls were really clunky and feel delayed, and I've had some unfair deaths thanks to that. I also kind of like the style of the graphics, but it does look unfinished. Also, it seems only some copies of the game have a load/save feature, mine only uses passwords... =/ Those are my biggest complaints, though, I really like the jump camera, and, like you pointed out, how you can move while in mid air. I also like the music because it just sounds really quirky, and I like quirky music... The whole thing just kind of has that weird 90s feel to it, and I love that, and is the main reason I'm still playing through it! One thing I'm sure about, if I got this game as a kid, I would've played the heck out of it, and maybe even loved it! Also, to those that hate the voice of Bubsy (I don't, personally), you can turn it off in the options, just saying...
Cobradabest Yeah, played it as well on an emulator (getting ps1 with working optical drive these days is impossible where I live) and the main problem is that Bubsy has pretty high inertia so you need to let go of the control quite before the place you want to stop at. But you can get used to it.
this game is nostalgic as hell, this exact day in my life, I just found this game again, and my whole life I knew this game existed and it wasn't just in my head, I smiled when I found it. I had fun with this game, AS A KID, I probably won't play it again but it was a good game to me.
Group psychology is a terrifying thing. Civilization probably couldn't function without the drive toward conformity and groupthink, but it's also been at the core of some of the most horrific shit in history. Just be glad we're only talking about games here.
I'm happy to see something i strongly i agree with "it's unfair when someone call BAD a game after playing the first 2-3 levels". It has been always so disappointing seeing also channels i'm really fond of, simply giving up on games that are surely not excellent, and turn the episode into a comedy trashtalk. There are so many yters capable of wonderful videos that show all their love for many games, but when it comes to review something that is laughable for some reason, everybody takes the comedy ruoute and call it a day without even putting the effort to go further.
Dude, I HAVE to catch your next stream. School has been kicking my ass but once I'm caught up with my studies I'll finally have the free time I used to have. Stay awesome bro!
Y'know, this is exactly the kind of video i wanted to do about this game. I agree with you on everything, but you should have mention the swift of platform from Sega 32X to Playstation and Sega Saturn (Planned to release in 1997, but cancelled), and yet the graphics give the idea of a distant, alien world as it should be.
I am glad Pete is back. Some people have to take breaks from things, and being in college while doing TH-cam must have been stressful. I am saying this as a high school student.
I've really been enjoying playing Bubsy 1, 2, and Woolies Strike Back. I've played a little bit of Fractured Furry Tales. I'm not ashamed to say I love Bubsy. I haven't had a chance to play Bubsy 3D yet but something tells me I'd enjoy it too.
Groupthink. It's unfortunately a common trait with humanity in general. It's far easier for people to just go along with everyone else's opinions rather than to form their own. I think most people grow out of it eventually. Not entirely, but mostly. And those who don't, well, it's easier to just ignore them and preferably remove them from your life. It's not worth the stress. Thank you for making this video, Pete. Maybe some viewers will start to learn to think for themselves a little earlier than they otherwise might have.
Well after watchnig this whole video, I am intrigued! I never tried because I "knew" it was complete shit. now I will go grab an iso, fire up emulator, and ee for myself!
I haven't played Bubsy 3D so I can't really say an opinion specifically about that game but I would like to say that I am really glad that you made this video as a similar thing has been on my mind a lot recently as well. In my opinion, there is no definition of what a good or bad game is as everyone has their own varying preferences to one another. After all, this is the reason why some games are catered towards certain people but not others. In a nut shell though, I don't think that anybody should feel like their opinion is less valid just because the masses don't agree with it. Thanks for a very thought provoking video, PeteDorr!
Interesting video. I personally have never played Bubsy 3d but I have the same thoughts about Devil's Third on the Wii U. It gets so much hate and the people that say negative things about it have never actually played it.
I'm much the same way: I go out of my way to play the games that people think are mediocre or terrible, looking for those instances in which factors like hype or launch timing and price made people be unfair to a game. Just in recent years, titles such as _Rise of the Argonauts_, _Venetica_ and _The Bureau:_ _XCOM Declassified_ are a prime examples of this.
Love the video Pete! I agree with the TH-cam brainwash. I do not know to much about Bubsy 3d. However, I think this is happening across a lot of games these days. I think indies today are a perfect example. A lot of people turn them down because they give off a more retro feel however there are some great games out that get bad raps because of youtubers. Thanks for the videos you have recently posted.
Pete i have to strongly disagree, Bubsy is not the worst game ever, not unplayable but is a mediocre game, is not by any means a good game. great video buddy, like to see you back.
It's good to hear people speaking out against the internet hive-mind. I'll admit, I assumed Bubsy 3D was a bad game, and I'm not convinced that it's not yet. From the reviews I've seen and the gameplay I've seen, I don't expect to be impressed; but that said tank controls aren't an issue for me (I enjoyed, 'Croc: Legend Of The Gobos'), and I often find I enjoy slower paced 3D games more than most (I really like 'Sonic 3D Blast' or 'Sonic 3D: Flicky's Island' as it was called here in UK). Maybe I'd find Bubsy to me more mediocre than bad; though that would ironically make it less interesting I feel. When it comes to the internet hive-mind, I find the entire concept annoying. I'm sick of hearing how some things are great and some things are terrible from people who've never experienced either. The amount of fanboy pandering there is for 'Ocarina Of Time' or 'Shadow Of The Colossus' from people who've never played them is pathetic (whether they're right or not). Likewise, I'm sick of hearing how "ET on the Atari 2600 sucks", from people who've never played an atari game in their fucking lives! Good on you for challenging the accepted narrative on quality. I've recently been doing the same after seeing 'Suicide Squad' in the cinema. After hearing endless bashing and people claiming it's one of the worst films of the year, I went to see it anyway expecting to hate it and was shocked to find I actually loved it. It's currently my favourite film of the year and I've seen it 3 times. Most of the complaints can be boiled down to; "this person clearly didn't pay attention, or possibly didn't even see the damn film and is parroting someone else's review". People would complain about plot holes that don't exist, get character motivations completely wrong, and make blanket statements that on examination don't actually mean anything or make sense. Most reviews of 'Suicide Squad' spend more than half their run time/word count on discussing the industry expectations, the director's previous work, comparing the film to Marvel Studio films, explaining it's importance to the DCEU, discussing fan reactions and backlash, commentary on Jared Leto's interviews or referencing his Oscar win, complaining about Harley Quinn's shorts (particularly if it's a SJW feminist cryfest review), or literally ANYTHING other than discussing the actual fucking film. It's all done in a vein attempt to sound knowledgeable about the subject and build credibility, but in reality it just shows that they don't trust their opinion on the film to carry the review. These people want to hate it so that they fit in and can claim the popular opinion... and they will do so, regardless of facts or reasoning. It's rather sad how quickly group-think spreads. Great video. I hope to see more like this.
This is why it's important to curate who you take advice from when looking for games and also why it's important to actually complete a game before putting up a review. I HATE 3D platformers but watching you play this actually does show me that there are tons of worse games out there than Bubsy 3D.
This is how I felt about Knack on PS4. So many people bash the game and just say it is so bad. But I played and beat it shortly after launch and I really enjoyed it. Sure it was difficult at points and had random really high difficulty spikes. But the feeling of accomplishment after beating a hard section was great. The story is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be either.
Pete, this was really interesting to watch. I agree what you stated near the end of the video "Just because the majority of people say a game is bad or not good or one of the worst games of all time. Don't take their word for it, play it yourself" Truly do believe that. Also I'm sorry that you're getting a ton of dumb comments here, stay awesome Pete!
If you liked Bubsy 3D, I advise you to try Spawn, Indepence Day, Batman and Robin. I'm sure you will enjoy those "good" games too. You can thank me after you beat them.
I do want to add though that bubsy 1, encounters of the claws kind, on snes is actually not that bad either. The controls are little floaty, and bubsy runs way too fast for how the levels are designed. But if you put a little time into it, it's actually pretty fun.
That makes me think: What if someone actually played all the other "worst games of all time" elected by the internet's public opinion? Will that person discover that some of those games are not as bad as previously stated? Games victims of our hunger to over-judge and laugh off of bad games?
I LOVE that you have done this Pete. Ive never played Bubsy 3d so ive never really passed judgement, but then that is the point isnt it? I have however played other games that, for some reason is hated almost universally but I really enjoy it for what it is. This "brainwashing" is so annoying and over the last frw years, due to the age of the internet and social media is so much worse. I wont mention any specific games but the amount of times ive chatted with friends only to have them say something like "OMG you play...?! How sad are you" and yet when I ask if they have played the game they always reply with "I dont need to. I KNOW the game sucks". I hate this kind of idiotic, sheep comment! So well done for actually being your own person Pete. Much kudos to you.
Someone silently whispers, "Please, dare to try the game(s) yourself and create your opinion(s) based on your own experience(s)". A valid argument for every situation.
I genuinely like Bubsy 3D. I first played a demo of it back in the day before I knew anything about what people thought of the game. I enjoyed it and I went to buy the full game. I enjoyed playing it. I sometimes liked playing it more than the first Crash Bandicoot but that is because I didn't like the first Crash game that much as a kid. Bubsy 3D is not one of the best games ever made but I still find it enjoyable. I think a lot of people online were brainwashed into hating it. I also like the music in the game. The last level music fits perfectly and it connotes a sense of danger and peril.
Bubsy 3D is a really good game and I'm glad there's people who agree. I remember people would be bashed on for a stupid reason such as liking Bubsy 3D.
I'm a big fan Pete. This is my first comment ever on your channel but I have been watching your videos for a long time. I just wanted to tell you that I respect you for giving your honest opinion on Busby 3d even though you knew you might take some heat for stating it. I've personally never played Bubsy 3d but I did watch your stream on twitch and I enjoyed what I saw. Keep up the good work dude and keep streaming.
I think this has been an idea that's steamrolled over the years, because Bubsy 3D had the misfortune of coming out in the same window of time as Super Mario 64, so the immediate comparison really buried it. Over time, it's never escaped that.
I like Sonic R.. Not everyone does, and there's been plenty of reviews bashing it, but I still enjoy it! It has a certain charm about it that I like! It's not a good racing game, but it's still rather enjoyable in it's weird, cheesy 90's way!
Good Video Pete. I think most reviewers just use games like this as fodder to get hits on their channel. I never played this game but as a fan of the game Deadly Towers I know what internet reviews do to some games. Thanks for actually playing something and then giving a fair review. (holy crap someone just used logic and reason!! Run away run away LOL)
No, Sorry Pete it was shit when released and shit now. Lets not fall into the trap of going against the grain just to seem like you are better and have more of an insight than everyone else. Some games do get an undeserved rep, Bubsy 3D fully deserves its bad rep.
Well, I have played the majority of games that are considered bad (E.T., Superman 64, Club Drive, Bubsy 3D and many more) and thus I can say that the majority of them suck, including Bubsy 3D, while others (such as Big Rigs) will at least give you a good laugh at least. Sure, the clips in between are funny, but the stiff tank controls, boring layout and cheesy one-liners are just atrocious.
It’s a shit game but it’s sad why. Accolade lost all their money and their offices and their computers so it was finished in one persons basement with a laptop as a last ditch effort
Bubsy was an alpha prototype, it doesn't even has textures on surfaces, every level still has the squares necessary during development to define space in relation to design and movement. It's just not finished...
Hey Pete great video it was refreshing hearing another person's opinion on the game I've never played any bubsy game but if I ever see it for super cheap ill get it :) great video keep up the awsome work man :)
I've always wanted to play it, mainly because it looks so clean and the jumping doesn't seem too bad. Finally bought it in ebay, because I've never seen it in stores. I'll see if I like it.
I love it when people find bad games enjoyable! There are some "bad" games out there that I enjoyed growing up as well. Have you ever seen Cygnus Destroyer/LJN Defender's videos, Pete? That's kind of his "thing" on youtube. I feel like you guys would get along haha
Funny thing about Bubsy 3d, it was the development studios first game they ever made, guess what their second was? Syphon Filter! I found it kind of hilarious that Sony would contract out such a developer to make a 1st party game for them but they did and Syphon Filter is one of the most loved PS1 games out there. And on that note, the ET bashing is ridiculous too, yeah it is kinda sucky, but the same guy made Hat's Revenge, surely that at least cancels out ET.
ET was the publishers fault not the developers. They gave thr developers under a month to make and test the game, which even at the time was ridiculous.
Something kind of prophetic about this review is that nowadays a lot of very good games are being released to mixed or even negative reception, simply because they were rushed out to a competitive market and reviewers gave inauthentic or even misinformed takes on the game. I hesitate to call it brainwashing so much as a status quo. It's really cool how this guy doesn't actually need footage of the game to be able to give a sincere and believable assessment of a game, that goes against what we all normally expect from a review. In fact, something you really never see anymore on TH-cam is one reviewer calling out other reviewers (even if indirectly) for not engaging with a product enough. It's great that even those who still disagree and think Bubsy 3D is bad can watch this and come away respecting Pete for his opinion.
I feel like a lot of reviewers hated on Bubsy 3D simply for viewership. I think a lot of them don't really care about criticizing the game and just want to make an entertaining video about it, even if it requires making the video untrue.
It's easier to follow popular opinion, plus the perk is you will be more popular if you do it. However if you think for yourself in life, you will always find things that are great that no one else knows about, and don't deserve to know about it.
As if an aesthetic object has a "right" or "wrong", the whole point is that humans are attracted to different aesthetic things, otherwise we would have nothing to say to each other about these matters. The gaming community is also not particularly known for well educated, respectful and objective discussions.
It's amazing compared to Superman 64
i wouldn't
maybe you just like eating shit?
are you comparing shit, to shit?
It's not April 1st Pete
Haha savage alpha
Lol
I was waiting for this comment. Never figured you'd be the one to post but I'm not surprised either.
Bro WTF? We share the same name lol
+AlphaOmegaSin It's not just that, but this is not a good game... THIS is: th-cam.com/video/D4KIeAY9hHI/w-d-xo.html
This is exactly why I like reviewers like you. You *ACTUALLY* finish the game and give out honest opinions.
It's the greatest game of all time.
I hope this a joke
if this is not a joke IM GONNA EXPLODE WITH ANGER OK?.....wait THIS IS NOT A JOKE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Regardless of me disagreeing with you on this, I gotta give you props for having the guts to make a video like this.
How does Sonic 06 have objectively bad ideas?
1 yes watched the video
2. yes I have played the game
3. I have my own opinion
Acting like anyone who does not agree has not played the game and just read reviews is pathetic and its childish to act like anyone who disagrees with you can't think for themselves.
I can't figure how you would come to this conclusion from what he said... Of course you could answer the way you did to all those questions and still hate the game.
He just wants people to have a decently well informed opinion and not just "This game is garbage because X said so, you're wrong Pete!!!"
+Joncryan That is the majority of haters unfortunately, similar to the FF13 hate. Ever heard of a bandwagon?
+Joncryan man you're such a narcissist. Obviously he's not directing that comment at you personally
Bubsy 3D is actually my favorite game in the series (and the only one that has never frustrated me), and I consider it the best game in the series alongside Paws on Fire! (Which came out recently). I hate when people say is a terrible game because just it isn't. I've cleared Bubsy 3D seven times, and I'm planning to do a series on it.
EDIT: Playthrough series has been finished months ago, and I've beaten 100% Bubsy 3D around 12 times, turning it into the #1 game I've fully beaten the most times ever.
Another underrated platforming starring a cat: Blinx the Time Sweeper
Yeah, I love that game!
(END SPOILER)
So, what I'm saying is that Bubsy 3D is really an example of something that is retroactively labeled as bad, because the current generation just doesn't understand what was happening in the previous generations.
Avarage is not bad
I only owned a demo which had Bubsy 3D's first level. I played the crap out of it. I wanted the full game but the one time I went to Gamestop to get it, they didn't have it. I knew the many things that were wrong with it, but I didn't care I liked it for what it was. Also enjoyed Croc: Legend of the Gobbo's.
You're damn right its good, approved by me, Bubsy! Nothing possibly went wrong.
I'm still cool, right?
Bubsy The Bobcat Very cool.
No,
Nope
people need to think of the context when games come out and not use games as a punching bag for easy jokes
This game is awful, just because it is somewhat functional does not mean it's good. I feel you are too generous in your praise.
Good video on calling people out on their BS!
go fuck yourself
You go first.
I enjoy plenty of terrible movies for one reason or another, that doesn't make them good movies in the classical sense though
i agree with this statement so much. Just think Pete is sort of talking BS.
he just likes the game and took offense to the negative reviews. lots of people are like this.
My thoughts exactly.
Pete has always had a disposition towards enjoying "underdog" aspects of video game culture. He seems very counter culture when it comes to this industry as a whole, and that is very important to consider when watching this video.
DigitalAnthony so essentially hipster logic. Listen, not that i don't think some games get bad raps and think they are great games and all, but the way he went at it was just so pompous and hipster in nature
no
That's why I don't listen to Reviews and form my own opinion by playing the game for myself.
Croc and Tomb Raider were built around tank controls, Bubsy 3D wasn't, Bubsy 3D was open world like Super Mario 64 and as a result, the Tank Controls are terrible in Bubsy 3D specifically
I never played Bubsy 3D and I'm not touching it
Wasn't bubsy 3d originaly meant for the 3zx or jaguar cd before Mario 64
is someone who had 100%ed this game, i can totally agree
But Codex Entry, it's a good game because I have (been granted the power of) Stockholm syndrome with it, therefore everyone but me is wrong.
I watched a review today where someone say that Trails in the Sky on the PSP didn't have much of a story and just laughed.
go fuck yourself
sega should make sonic dream collection canon
That game was great! Great Wii game :)
I love that your uploading again. Always enjoy hearing your thoughts on games.
Micah Buzan micah
"I actually enjoyed this game" "NO YOU'RE OBJECTIVELY WRONG"
I'm glad Pete's making videos again.
Those are my biggest complaints, though, I really like the jump camera, and, like you pointed out, how you can move while in mid air.
I remember loving the series when I was a kid. Bubsy 3D was no different. I enjoyed it.
This is the petedorr I always loved watching. Makes me inspired playing games. Thank you
I've really been enjoying playing Bubsy 1, 2, and Woolies Strike Back.
LAV mic, something every TH-cam should be required to wear when making any video with talking.
Hey Pete, glad to see your little Marty pencil holder you talked about on HCG's channel.
Pete! Well said friend! I'm very happy you are making videos again!! Welcome back. I hope you enjoyed Arizona whilst you were here.
I can name a bunch of psone games that are worse than bubsy 3D really
name them, and explain why individually
Should he cite using MLA or APA standards?
either way
not gonna lie you have me wanting to give this game a shot. and it's awesome to have you back pete!!
hey dude, it was good to see you in arizona. thanks for sitting in on my panel
man I wish I was there for that
yo mo sat on my face.
I remember playing the game as a kid found it way too hard but still had fun watching my sister play it.
I think bubsy games as a whole get unjust hate.
Absolutely!
The Jaguar game is genuinely awful, but 1, 2 and 3D are decent.
@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 And the new ones are just meh. Although Paws on Fire! is quite decent.
Someone silently whispers, "Please, dare to try the game(s) yourself and create your opinion(s) based on your own experience(s)". A valid argument for every situation.
I'm glad I got this game too. I does a few things right, like the lack of warped and twisted textures, something that PLAGUED PS1 games.
Glad to see you making these types of videos again
I never played a game in this series and currently have no plans to play this game in the series
Nice having another two videos so close together!
I was really digging your gex poster :)
But is it playable? Yes. Is it enjoyable? Depends on your experience. It doesn't matter whether it's finished or not.
Petedorr is calling out alphaomegasin with this video!!!
Been great watching you stream this!!
hello pete! love ur streams, nice to see vids again, cheers!
Some interesting points. Watching some of what you have played it doesn't look up my alley, though.
Yar's Revenge, stupid phone autocorrect!
ET was the publishers fault not the developers. They gave thr developers under a month to make and test the game, which even at the time was ridiculous.
Damnit man.. Now I need to try Bubsy 3D.
It's great that even those who still disagree and think Bubsy 3D is bad can watch this and come away respecting Pete for his opinion.
what a video???? since when did pete make those
it's called being busy and having a life, dipshit.
DawnOfThaDusk I was joking Pete has been streaming on twitch instead of focusing on TH-cam.
yo bro youre so kool dawnofthabitchass
@@DawnOfThaDusk r/woosh
Bubsy 3D is still better than the $60 Switch Pokémon Games.
+Pete Dorr You can blame the AVGN for making the majority of the gaming community to think it was bad.
Wrong you can thank Jontron
Your thinking of Sonic 06
i mean TheJonTronShow said that the game is bad and it got muuuuch views i think like 5 million
oh
he's not wrong. he's just also right. the avgn video has almost 3 million
I like to see your fresh perspective.
I feel like a lot of reviewers hated on Bubsy 3D simply for viewership. I think a lot of them don't really care about criticizing the game and just want to make an entertaining video about it, even if it requires making the video untrue.
How would you compare it to Kingsley's Adventure? That game also is for ps1 with tank controls and I dont think I'll ever be able to beat it
It's easier to follow popular opinion, plus the perk is you will be more popular if you do it. However if you think for yourself in life, you will always find things that are great that no one else knows about, and don't deserve to know about it.
Pete have you ever played Deathtrap Dungeon on the PS1, if so what do you think?
As if an aesthetic object has a "right" or "wrong", the whole point is that humans are attracted to different aesthetic things, otherwise we would have nothing to say to each other about these matters.
The gaming community is also not particularly known for well educated, respectful and objective discussions.
