I think most people let the popcorn dry off a good bit before it goes in jars. The other thing about popcorn relative to other grains people use is that it's very clean. So much so that you can get away with not even using a pressure cooker, and just steaming the jars in a pot for a few hours.
Excellent question! Many of us use grain water to make agar. I would not suggest using it at full strength, and to also dial back whatever youre using as a glucose supplement in your agar recipe. Too high of a nutrient profile in your agar is toxic to mycelium. Hope this helped, and Happy Cultivating
Thanks. White popcorn is smaller? That's what I have been using and it keeps coming out much too wet. I'm going to try yellow this time. Maybe white needs less time in pressure cooker?
You have to lay it as a fine layer to dry a bit, along with that, being smaller consider what species you are growing. If it is a slow growing species it’s going to take that smaller grain and eventually turn it to rotten mush. Is it mush right off or later on? Sooner than later is more than likely a moisture content issue, later than sooner a slow grower issue for the type of grain. Hope this helps and most importantly makes sense. 🍄💚
Here's another thing you might experiment with: How does the moisture spread through the corn kernel after pressure cooking and being placed into jars, etc.? I just wondered if anyone has ever just put un-inoculated corn into jars or bags and then observed if the corn gets softer as the corn sits in its container?
Yo 190 min for popcorn already sterilized from the factory because it’s for human consumption, unlike other grains we use, is waaaayyyyyy long my guy. Definitely only need the ole 90 on popcorn no?
yes, you can substitute the Karo with just about any glucose supplement. Some favorites are: raw sugar, black strap molasses, sorghum syrup, and honey. It is also advantageous to use the same glucose supplement across all your mediums: agar, grains, and LC broth. This gives the mycelium a familiar food source across all your mediums, "training" it on what to eat. This makes the "jump off" time from medium to medium easy and effortless when changing between mediums, theres not adaptation phase. This helps reduce contamination by allowing the mycelium a head start in outpacing any possible contaminants. Hope this helps, and Happy Cultivating!
No micropore tape is not even rated to stop contamination...that's why I use two pieces. Look into self healing injection ports....that's way to go for needle innoculation.
The syrup is added food for the mycelium, and the coffee grounds when mixed into the corn acts as places for the mycelium to catch onto, and start growing a bit easier.
The reason for the pressure cooking is to replace soaking. The kernels need to absorb some water as the mycelium won't efficiently (or at all) colonize dry grain, but you don't want excess water, hence the draining between the two steps. As JF mentioned, the other components are just readily available nutrients that will coat the grains and help the mycelium establish.
I'll mix in gypsum into the substrate. Considering you strain out the kernels, most of the gypsum and coffee just end up down the drain anyway. Unbroken popcorn kernels aren't known for their absorbency, y'know? If you're using karo along with gypsum or coffee, I think that helps out more. You're making the kernels a little tacky so the nutrients stick to the grains. More nutrients will make it into the jars along with your kernels.
They hydrate at different rates, so unless you did each separately you may run into issues... Not to mention a lot of transferring going on, upping the risk of contamination.

I THOUGHT my jars were too wet... lots of water on the walls of the inside. But the popcorn will suck some of that back up. I dried mine to what i thought it should be and ran the "wet" vs the "dry" side by side and the "wet" one colonized way faster, and the dryer ones dry out before full colonization. long story short just try it out and see what happens, might not be as wet as you think
