The only way a person or nation can improve it to look back at mistakes and try to correct. What a great song of a great guy... It was in the summer of 1989 when I went with a few friends to an open-air concert of Bruce Cockburn in the city "Karl-Marx-Stadt" (GDR). (Today this city is called Chemnitz again...:-) Live concerts with musicians from Western countries were still a minor sensation in the GDR back then. It was a great concert - even though it rained the whole time. After the concert we walked along the barrier fence because one of us had the crazy idea of breaking into the backstage area to see the musicians up close. It's hard to believe, but there was actually a loophole that we crawled through and quickly we were at the large container that Bruce Cockburn was about to go into. The "FDJ" stewards - a kind of security guards back then - had of course noticed us and wanted to intercept us, but too late, Bruce had discovered us (and protected us) and invited us into the container where his musicians were already. We were offered hot tea and Coca Cola, sat down with them and talked for a while, maybe 15 or 20 minutes (for us it was an eternity) - so we talked (with our limited English) about the political situation in the GDR and of course also about music. We were totally over the moon - we were backstage with our star and were able to talk to him, get autographs written on the tickets and posters - it was unbelievable that this was possible!!! When I listen to his music today, I always remember this experience with a smile...😀

A friend of mine told me that, at the Rio Lacantun (border between Mexico and Guatemala), people trying to swim or wade across the river where shot at from helicopters. So people were stuck on the Guatemalan side where they had fled to escape the massacres, and there by the river some of them "fell down from starvation", or were orphaned. (The original video shows little kids sitting aimlessly by the side of a river).

Underrated guitarist, singer and songwriter There's only one Bruce.
The drummer is outstanding. Reminds me of Omar Hakim or maybe Steward Copeland. So clean and methodical but exciting at the same time.

Lyrics are great, but it's the incredible instrumental performances that make this a favorite version of mine. Makes me wish I could play guitar or at least drums.

You know, I've tried to learn multiple instruments, but failed.. Then I discovered the ukulele and now I'm in a band, am learning to sing, and am having a blast. The ukulele was magic for me. Try it., you never know.

Really nice guitar work, Bruce has a good tone, pretty tight sound too. I remember this song from the mid-80s and loved it then and this is an even better version.
Loved this song when it first came out, loved it when I saw him live 20 years ago and this version is AWESOME!!! Truly a fantastic singer/songwriter
Where was he? He's Canadian, that's the story. He was here and has been going for forty years, and has more than a dozen albums out. Truly one of our great guitarists, songwriters and a force for social justic. Very privileged to have played with him, way back in the seventies. What a great soul!

I loved this song the first time I heard it and I love this song still - very powerful imagery in his words that is, sadly, still true today and maybe even more so than when it was written - my prayers are for peace, love and truth - may the world know them someday instead of war, hate and lies...
The way Bruce plays, 90% of the time you only see his thumb moving. But man o man those other 3 are going crazy. And his fretwork is peerless.
