TL;DR: Kanami is a bitchin' composer. Classical music often uses a theme with variations. A blatant example is Mozart K. 265 Twelve Variations on "Ah vous dirai-je, Maman" (which translates to "Ah shall I tell you, Mama" but you know the tune as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" or maybe the "Alphabet Song"). There are dozens of youtube videos; this is one th-cam.com/video/9bK9h12Qdvs/w-d-xo.html Until about 100 years ago, composers developed their ideas this way but the technique isn't used much anymore. Modern pop music cuts and pastes the same four bars and never advances a musical idea. Part of the reason Ryan hates modulation is because it is (perceived as) a cheap and manipulative way of adding interest. That's unfortunate because modulation (in the right hands) is a very effective way of advancing a musical idea. You've all noticed Band-Maid does this over and over. Kanami writes a riff and then immediately starts altering it. Sometimes she adds things to it, sometimes she subtracts things from it. The band plays a verse and then changes the second verse. They change the notes, they change the instruments, they change who gets the focus. It is one reason I think Kanami has a classical background even though I don't know her, I've never met her, and I am unlikely to ever meet her. The other reason is how the parts fit together. Sometimes it is hard to practice your part when you play in orchestra, because it makes no sense without the rest of the group. Classical composers often write on piano and divy up the parts - this part goes to the double basses, this part to the cellos, that part to the violas, these parts to violin I and violin II, trumpets, horns, trombones, tuba, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, percussion, etc. If you play the trumpet part by itself it might seem random, but when you play with the rest of the orchestra you realize your part maybe emphasizes something the strings are playing. Together all those parts mesh because it was written that way. When you listen to a Kanami composition you realize MISA, Miku, Akane, Saiki, and Mincho are all playing ONE thing, even though it might seem like they are all separate. That unity is perceptable even by non-musicians who can't put their finger on it. The theme and development is also perceptable. A non-musician might not detect exactly what happened - they might not hear that something changed - but their brain does and it tickles pleasantly.
From more of a fan's view than a guitar player, I've simply been stunned at the sheer number of great songs - regardless of complexity - that they have put out. You guys read my mind: the big separation is the composition. It's something about the combination of melodic hooks, Kanami's riff machine, genius song structures, the ability to seamlessly integrate just about any genre. And then you have MISA and Akane filling in with their own amazing counterpoint. That's one of the reasons hardcore fans are always saying "you really need to listen to this closely, maybe a few times". Or why musician reactors are usually the first ones to grasp what's going on. Of course, they are all excellent technically as well, but so are a thousand other bands. Thanks, GGs!
Kanami is a classical music buff, so she writes her music like Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, and etc... and then incorporates her guitar heroes into her playing plus the songwriting of the writers of their early stuff. It also helps her that MISA and Akane are also versed in classical music and music theory as well. Miku and Saiki add the mainstream tastes.
Great points and I don't think this gets brought up enough. Especially the part of how much classical music has influenced her writing style for "rock" music.
As a non-musician, I can only say that their music is amazing and it makes me happy when I hear it. The fact that they are also lovely people that care for each other and put so much effort into making their fans happy is just a bonus. Their recent US tour is positive proof that they love their fans more than most bands. I feel so lucky to have discovered them right before the pandemic started. Will we see a picture of Akane for her birthday Ryan? 😀
Also can we talk about speed vs technique vs song writing. Make a long post short, someone wrote that Kamani is not the best guitar player cause someone can shred better than her. I'm 34 years old. Been listening to metal and hard rock since a baby and honestly I'm tired of guitarists playing a thousand notes per minute. Just shredding for the sake of shredding and sometimes the solo doesn't fit the song. So now what impresses me is good song writing and Kamani has this in massive spades. Her ability to write songs is really amazing to see and she's been doing it since I think their 3rd album? Some of the best songs ever have real basic simple song structure that didn't need a gazillion notes being played. Also why Band Maid is one of the best bands ever is cause each member is essential to the band. Each member brings something speical and it all works beautifully time and time again
Thank you for this, and I agree 100%. It seems to fall into two categories: craft versus art. Playing lots of notes, playing in tempo, playing in tune - that all falls into the "craft" category. It's important, but it's only one part. Art is being able to express and evoke emotions - revealing your inner self, and allowing everyone listening to feel like they know you. "Some of the best songs ever have real basic simple song structure ..." Yes, think of the blues. It is a very basic pattern that repeats over and over. Yet the form allows the performer to connect with their listeners and express their pain, and allows their audience into their life. It doesn't need a page full of notes to be very intimate.
That's what I think too. This band is inseparable. However, I'm sure that each of them could make a solo career or found another band around her. I know that's a bad thought. But they never will.
@@surfingasongwave All true what you said. I think you said it even better myself. One of the best Metallica solos from Kirk is the solo from Ride The Lightning. On the first half of the solo it feels like he's playing his guitar in such a way that it displays emotions what the person in the song is going through and Kirk isn't going super fast until the second half. It might be my favorite solo from him or at least in my top 5
I have a feeling on the early albums she did some uncredited “writing” by what she played. Certainly any song the do will inevitably be Maidded up. Like “Honey.”
Can only speak for myself. I enjoy and support many great bands from Nippon. Besides Band-Maid l enjoy Nemophila, Asterism, Lovebites and Babymetal. But the thing is there is much more to Band-Maid than the music. There is a natural attachment that comes from the ladies themselves above and beyond just the music. And, for whatever reason, that same attachment and emotional bond just does not exist with all the others. That does not make the others any less talented musically. It means only that Band-Maid has reached me and many, many others on an entirely different level. That is the magic of five amazing woman and how they seem to have tapped into something that the others have not.
From what I understand, they write the music first and Miku ads lyrics to it later (using the english placeholder words Kanami has already put in). Kanami usually kickstarts the music by programming it in using a keyboard before passing the data off to Akane and Misa, who write/update their parts. So without the lyrics (or lyric melody) in the way it's not surprising that Kanami goes off in tangents in the music. They all speak about constantly improving their skills and pushing themselves, so she does just that. They are quite competitive, and I bet a pound to a penny they watch TH-cam reaction videos to see who picked up what and work out how they can make it harder for people to replicate.
Wave's Kanami / Tic Toc comparison was spot on and insightful -- something you could only derive from breaking down her compositions and then try to play the thing. 👍😝🤘
The Band itself praises Kanami's writing for the instruments but also the vocals parts as well. How she writes with all those constant changes in one song where it could easily be spread out to other tunes. I'd say Mincho is such a gift to have with this Band who's never fails to disappoint
The Band are not a Band but brilliant individuals who each get given a chance to shine through brilliant writing. The music and the lyrics and the personalities just compliment each other. Hi Guys, I agree for Kanami with all of you, I've always said this since I met Band Maid in 2017. I'm from the old school of guitarists who grew up with, Malmsteen, Hendrix, Satriani, Steve Vai, Petrucci etc. etc. and I listen to a lot of them, I see a lot of virtuosity, speed but just copies of techniques. But Kanami a fantastic composer and performer, Alan is right he pushes you to compose and not copy technique. Another one at a high level is Miyaco apart from speed sometimes she introduces unique and fantastic things in solos
Good point about TikTok, Wave. I think it's also pretty noticeable in the 2nd half of Influencer. Honestly, with a few exceptions (like Daydreaming), Kanami's solos aren't even my favorite part of her playing. It's the little nuances and touches she adds throughout the songs.
A lot of reactors used to say that kanami is not as good as session musicians but what she does she does damn good. Because she writes crazy stuff with what she knows. However she is still getting better and better. From now on is some new stuff I've never seen her do

My theory never got any real traction but I still believe Kanami is a musical savant. It explains her genius, her enigmatic character, her sometimes childlike behaviour, her workaholic, obsessive character, her on stage Michu lost in music character and her compositions and playing outside of the box that everyone else uses.
Some people might resist the word because of definition 3 (from Wiktionary): savant (plural savants) 3. A person with significant mental disabilities who is very gifted in one area of activity, such as playing the piano or mental arithmetic. Synonym: idiot savant That's not the primary definition but since the movie "Rain Man" it seems to have an implication in American English, at least. Kanami seems to be very smart in a number of different areas, so a musical savant but definitely *not* an idiot savant with musical gifts.
@@TwinTailSteve Musical Savate? (a tireuse) When you see Kanami moving around on stage, and sometimes kicking to Akane's drums, it doesn't feel completely wrong.

Like, vote to avoid tinnitus from the chatter that would otherwise be. Another comparison could be the conversation about having 4 wives Humprey Bogart had in a cave with a Muslim. (Can't remember the name of the movie.) Bogart was a little jealous. The Muslim replied that the wisest thing would still be to have only one wife. Simply because: 2 wives: They argue with each other more or less non-stop. 3 wives: Even worse, two against one in constant outbursts, pacts that also change frequently. They require you to solve it all. 4 Wives: They unite, and all turn against you. Unclear value of the above paragraphs. Mostly written because I've been waiting for an opportunity to throw in Bogart.

From now on is some new stuff I've never seen her do
There are great session musicians who will never write a decent tune....they're not gifted with the knack of creativity.
@@philproffitt8363 agree. There is musician here in Barbados who flies out to the states as a session guy. He loves Santana style so I keep tagging him on my band maid posts
kanami can write we know this. i couldnt find someone else who might listen to saying that radwimps... a band no one might know... but they were hired to compose the movie "your name" love kanami but give this movie a chance
@@philproffitt8363 That is also not their job. They are session musicians for a reason. Being able to play pretty much everything, no matter the genre or who approaches them.
I'm with you all!!! LIVE FOREVER BAND-MAID!!!
This is how it's like when I was in a group talk with my fellow anime freaks,
Do you guys have plans for Akane's Birthday?
😈👍
You guys are awesome. Said everything I wanted to say. If you go check out the reactions randomly on TH-cam, you, quite often, run into the guys who don't have ears to listen. They normally point out only the superficial things and maybe they don't even realize they're losing potential followers.
My theory never got any real traction but I still believe Kanami is a musical savant. It explains her genius, her enigmatic character, her sometimes childlike behaviour, her workaholic, obsessive character, her on stage Michu lost in music character and her compositions and playing outside of the box that everyone else uses.
Some people might resist the word because of definition 3 (from Wiktionary): savant (plural savants)
3. A person with significant mental disabilities who is very gifted in one area of activity, such as playing the piano or mental arithmetic. Synonym: idiot savant
That's not the primary definition but since the movie "Rain Man" it seems to have an implication in American English, at least. Kanami seems to be very smart in a number of different areas, so a musical savant but definitely *not* an idiot savant with musical gifts.
I think you have the right idea, just not the correct word.
@@TwinTailSteve Musical Savate?
(a tireuse)
When you see Kanami moving around on stage, and sometimes kicking to Akane's drums, it doesn't feel completely wrong.
@@surfingasongwave Musical savants are often difficult or anti social but only because of the total musical involvement. They are not mentally deficient in any way .
@@TwinTailSteve Perhaps she is just a musical genius with a complex personality. Off stage unless involved in composition or arrangement she can be quite child like - unless it is all an act and she is laughing at us.
Great reaction.
IMHO, techniques are just tools. You can master all of them, but without doing anything worthwhile, you just waste them and your time altogether.
Is BAND-MAID your fave band because 3 of you like "Chemical Reaction" so a 3 to 1 vote wins?🤭
Champ has no chemical reaction for this song. But he is very much in love with Kanami.😍
You are absolutely right. A chemical reaction, the survival instinct against strange logic. In this case at the quantum physical level, influence at a distance.
Simply because:
2 wives: They argue with each other more or less non-stop.
@@Kissthetoad321 That's true. Can't say i disagree with him.😁
@@jagjag3236 And what an awesome way to segue into a Bogart film. And you know the correct answer & wisest thing of all would be : Don't have any wives at all.🤪
@@jagjag3236 I really like Bogart but I don't remember that movie you're talking about. What year is it?
Because of the following that provides more views?
Nah, not all of you
Lol true.
