    Excellent! I didn't even know about the default hidden 10% mitigation every player has. A lot of information crammed into 12 minutes. Well done! There is just one thing and it's a major one regarding Battle Spirit. You say the new Battle Spririt will make a 9% difference. That is technically true and I used to think about the math in the same way until someone corrected me. Not a technical correction, but a matter of perspective. You see, in PvP we never take 100% damage. We only take a fraction of the damage an NPC would take, because of Battle Spirit, because of the default 10%, because of a minimum amount of armor we wear. Our baseline for the damage we take is therefore hovering somewhere around 50% of actual damage at all times. When viewed from that perspective, the 9% Battle Spirit change is not 9%. It is more like 18%. This is why people from the PTS are reporting everyone is really tanky.

    Great video and very informative. Can you do a video digging into impen vs reinforced and explain why (mathematically) impen seems to be best in slot? Maybe using examples like vs ganker and vs stamcro so we can see the tradeoff of choosing impen/ reinforced relative to each other.

  • @fredeso7844
    @fredeso7844 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Of course another perspective that I've come to believe recently is that it's not ZOS who determine the tank meta. It's the players! Nightblades usually drive that point home and are possibly on the cutting edge of how the game is balanced. There is only a certain amount of ganking power players will tolerate. Experienced players need to build tanky so they can 1vX bad players. Once you pass a certain threshold into squishiness your attack collapses. You get too busy with active defense. That is expensive too, so your sustain collapses. On the other hand, if you are an inexperienced player, you just want to survive and you may build tanky without having a good offense (yet). No one likes to be killed excessively.
    On PC EU people are just tankier again. Give a few weeks or maybe 2 months and the playerbase actively chooses a certain level of tankiness as a whole. The gank build outliers, the crazy 1 shot stamsorcs, they even seem to have subsided, probably from lacking enough targets or because of the extreme squishiness of those builds. I could be wrong ... I play less now ... but that is how it seems to me.
    So what will change? What will change are the builds and armor sets. Instead of half the population wearing Pariah, more aggressive set combinations will come back in vogue. What will also change are the outliers. If the meta as a whole is squishier like now, that favors nightblades, but also stealth and damage avoidance (movement / speed based) builds in general. If it is tankier, those builds will be blunted and extreme (werewolf or whatever) tanks will be possible again. The people who are not playing the extreme builds however, which is probably 90% of the population, they will just settle on the same level of tankiness they always had. It will only take a bit of time and different armor sets.

      Perfectly stated. My current magplar is too squish atm to be competitive so just as you stated I am constantly spamming heals instead of jabs.

    • @flextime6349
      @flextime6349 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What would that threshold of squishiness look like in numbers?

    • @fredeso7844
      @fredeso7844 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@flextime6349 Hahaha, I wish I could answer that. I first encountered this phenomenon years ago on my stam DK, when I always lost against a mag DK friend. This turned around drastically, much to my friend's consternation, when I build a little tankier. I could stay on the attack longer and suddenly I was pressuring him and I won every duel thereafter.
      I kind of think you need to maximise your attack to defense ratio. It doesn't matter whether you do high damage or low damage, whether you are tanky or squishy. In a duel the person with the best damage to defense ratio wins - assuming you are not both so tanky that you stalemate. This is best exemplified by, say, a stamblade versus a stam DK scenario. Leaving aside the ebb and flow of the duel, either of these characters may just be plain stronger than the other. The nightblade typically achieves this by having very high damage, so they can seriously put you on the back foot until they have to Shadow Image out for some reason. A stam DK, on the other hand is typically a much tankier setup. This might seem obvious, but the question is, when you plot a characters damage against the damage they can absorb, how wide is the gap. The character with the widest gap is likely to win the fight.
      This is a very simplistic argument that ignores damage avoidance versus healing, shielding and just plain passively tanky playstyles. However every now and again you really feel that damage versus defense factor seriously being tilted to favor one party.
      The most obvious class that illustrates this issue is magplar. The typical way to build one is to combine tankiness with high damage. Indeed, I think the reason the Sweeps and Jabs tooltips were designed by ZOS to be so insanely high is that these are pressure classes and need to be played really agressively or be backed into a corner. Magplar is especially known for the difficulty of getting off their back bar when you start spamming Honor the Dead. You could say that's down to a bad playstyle or a bad build or both, but it precisely illustrates the point. Pirate Skeleton was the go to set for magplar in the past, unless you were really adept at dishing out the damage, which probably has to do with your positioning and movement when you spam Sweeps.

      @@flextime6349 Sorry, I was rambling in my other post. It's a hard question to answer. I can only see, by how hard it is to kill players now versus the beginning of this (and the last) patch that people adjust. They build for a certain level of tankiness, if they can.

I was also a long time under the impression that its 68, this comes from some threads i think but for crit we can easily check it by the tooltip from warhorn: "You and your allies gain 1320 Critical Resistance for 10 seconds, reducing incoming critical damage by 20%." 1320:20=66. Thx and cheers.

    Nice video, thanks!
    Let's give an example for NORMAL DAMAGE;
    Our damage gonna be %75 mitigated (include everything, battle spirit, our penetration etc.) and our skill tooltip says 10.000 damage. So we hit for 2.500 damage.
    Example for CRITICAL DAMAGE;
    We have %170 crit damage and enemy has %20 crit resistance. We are gonna hit for %150 damage when it is critical. Skill tooltip says 10.000 damage. Our damage should be 15.000 now but enemy has %75 damage mitigation total (include everything, battle spirit, our penetration etc.). So we hit for 3.750 damage.

    I have a question….what?!
    Lol. I’m kidding. Great video and seriously needed. It’s still a lot of numbers to crunch from build to build. The most helpful info is the figures that equal 1%. Armor and crit resist values are not easy to find out there. The rest people just have to know is that it’s not adding numbers. That I always knew.
    50% of 100 is 50. 50% of THAT is 25. It’s sorta like that. It’s not zero.

  • @silver1surfer69
    @silver1surfer69 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another interesting thing that i realized at some point is that mitigation in general is multiplicative yes, but stacking resistance up to the cap (which is in my believe 33100) is additive!!! So from stacking armor you get the full value without substraction!!

    • @TheRealGodzilla
      @TheRealGodzilla  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's 33000, 50% mitigation. Meaning you can't get anymore that 50% from armor BUT it's subtractive vs other ppls penetration. So like say you have 38k resistance, but someone has 5k pen. Well you'll still be at soft cap of 33k

    • @silver1surfer69
      @silver1surfer69 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRealGodzilla Yeah but the great thing is, that when u lets say increase from 31k to 33k u get the full value, but if u add eg potentate u dont get the +3%. because potentate is multiplicative.

      @@silver1surfer69 correct

    • @silver1surfer69
      @silver1surfer69 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRealGodzilla So to give a specific example, if you add an armor set piece bonus of 1487 thats 2.2% mitigation its very likely that you gain more than adding potentate which gives 3%, but the more mitigation bonuses you gather (vampire, cp and so on), the less you gain, thats how multiplicative works (not considering the fact that pure mitigation cant be bypassed by penetration, or things like hrothgar).

    Math proves, your not just guessing and know what you're talking about.
    It's hard to find people who can do a math break down to everything so you know exactly what's going on.
    You did a Good job at explaining 👍
    I'm not sure about this but I've heard a rumor block migration is caped at 90%, from what I understood block mitigation when blocking gets factor in first then the sea of mitigations.
    When I found that out I block build since it seems to behave additive of half of the percentage that gets added. I tested this myself that it does, since its added to the 50% of base block
    Why I switched to a stam sorc for tanking for its bound Aegis(gives 40% more block which is actually plus 20% to the base 50%) so with S&B passives, in 5 medium armor, cp , I could at reach 90%.
    When resistance got added, at 33000 I noticed my mitigation was at 95%, which made me think resistance weren't as great as I thought since block mitigation did 90% of the work and Max resistance would give 5% mitigation.
    I haven't tested or tried but with footman from VDSA set and some cp you could get the block mitigation to 100% for no damage taken but I've never test it out , most I've done is up to 90%.
    Idk I thought it was interesting, not sure if there is an exploit there to be found in blocking, maybe you can further look into blocking 🤔

    Great video, I tried to figure out the math myself and was pleased to get the exact same results as you except for regards to crit resistance. I believe 1% crit dmg to be equal to 88 not 66 crit resist as you stated.
    My evidence to support this value comes straight from the sturdy war horn tool tip, it states “you and your allies gain 1320 crit resist for 10 seconds, REDUCING INCOMING CRITICAL DAMAGE BY 15%.” If my math is correct we can figure out what 1% is from there. Take 100/15= 6.66667, multiply that by what we know is 15% crit resist which is 1320. 6.66667*1320= 8,800

      It's more complex than that depending on who's inflicting the damage. Some buffs and debuffs cancel altogether like major protection and major berserk so they get removed from the overall damage calculation. I am not sure if the CP AOE buff is canceled by shuffle in this way 🤔 but it may. Being off balance or stunned also increases damage taken quite a bit promoting combos that do extreme damage per tik.

      On the real, thanks for putting this up. I found myself asking this question earlier in the week and realised I needed a refresher on mitigation

    Thanks Zilla, but....let's be honest here, alot of these guys are here looking for an out of the ass whooping they have coming to em! No amount of mitigation is able to mitigate the real problem here...BAD BUILDS, LACK OF SKILLS AND POOR DECISION MAKING!
    LMAO, with that said, if I catch any of these guys out at Davons Watch wayshrine; Haunting Curse, Streak, Pap! (Dizzying Swing), Pap! (Dizzying Swing), BOOM! (Haunting Curse), PAP! (Dizzying Swing) ...you're dead!
    Have a good day though everyone! 😊🤗

    So, to make an advanced build of your own creation (not some TH-cam tutorial build), you have to have a fucking math degree?

    • @itaxevasixn8808
      @itaxevasixn8808 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bro im literally retarded and i make solid builds. You dont have to be good at math at all to build in this game… you just have to learn mechanics and how things interact with each other in game. This video is just a very specific mathematical explanation of how eso resistances work.

    August 31 2023.The whole TRUE is: TESO PROFESIONAL PVP IS ALL GOOD BUT NOT FUN. You need take a boring math university degree to slighty understand how it works (i understand now why after every patch pvpers scream like crazies, cuz after whole nights trying to understand how put together a set up, Beth just turn down all numbers and they need again start to study what the hell that means to they and thier toon set ups). If U WANT TO GET FUN, just wear what u want, die a lot, get some tickets, and enjoy when ur silly set up help ur alliance big moguls to kill someone. Don´t waste ur time trying to understand what can not be understood.

    Ngl they should not change your stats from pve to pvp it’s so dumb also monsters should be able to hit crits. Health recovery basically nothing 😂
