  • "WBCN: The Last Broadcast" captures The Rock of Boston's final hours at 104.1. Bradley Jay, Oedipus, Juanita and a handful of staffers give WBCN it's final sendoff at CBS Radio in Brighton, playing the music and telling the stories of an iconic radio station that will forever be missed.
I'm Geno Knight and I shot most of this footage. An hour before he went on the air, I asked Bradley if I could film the show, never thinking he'd say yes. Part of me wanted to shoot it to document an important moment in radio. But the bigger part of me just wanted to be in the room. I took the job at CBS Boston so I could be a part of the WBCN story. Unfortunately, I came in during the final chapter.
The editing and second camera work that joined in during the final hour was done by the incredible Roger Moore. I gave Roger a general idea of what I wanted... he turned it into a masterpiece. Enjoy!

Lots of memories for me from these stations back in the late 70's early 80's . . WBCN, WCOZ, WAAF, and WBRU :)

I've lived a life of regret and I never regret a minute of the time I spent at WBCN, I wish I could have been there longer. This was a poetic send-off and Bradley J did it right. RIP WBCN, you are forever missed.

An amazing radio station. One of the best rock stations in the country.

March 15.1968 the start of a new era in radio. The date of my 17th birthday and here 51 years later tears as the loss of one of the joys of having grown up and matured in Boston. The "Rock of Boston" ruled the airwaves.

I just watched WBCN and the American Revolution! Loved the Documentary and lots of vintage footage! I live North of the Border in NH and we used to listen to BCN alot up there. Sad that it's gone. I got a degree in Broadcasting in Florida in 1995 and always interested in coming back North to Radio and maybe BCN. But ended up in the Transport business instead. It's hard to find good music on the Radio today that doesn't sound all sound the same and written by Ai. The Alternative Music stations of this Country seem to be the best and have real talent unlike most of the Top 40. I still have some BCN stickers, I might put one on my Car to memorialize the Station!

BCN did everything right. Always two steps ahead. Their programming was second to none. The industry's north star. Their final broadcast was nothing less than everything they did for 40 years.

Wow. So great. I had no idea this was out here. I worked on the Listener Line for Bradley, Albert, Raz, Carmelita... Sad to see the end but so great to look back. I STILL have the little Listener Line yellow card in a drawer -signed by Chachi. Great memories. Enjoyed all of it.

A little embarrassed here -- late for another party again. So glad I bumped into this as I did not know it existed and when BCN went off the air I had not listened to it in years. My boy Bradley J did it right and I was so proud of myself when I blurted out "I FEEL FREE" for the final song. It had to be...right? Except when I heard that extended opening note of The Final Song I knew he got it right. Just surprised I didn't spill a tear. If I was not such a confirmed Christian, WBCN would have been my religion. Of that I have little doubt as I listened to it all day and more often than not nights and weekends. Just loved it -- always groovin to the music and laughing along...and for those who don't know BCN was Top Shelf in comedy and humor. Just brilliant stuff by the boatload. Thanks for switching format back in April? 68, a little before my time, but once I grabbed hold I was hooked forever (or at least til whatsisname arrived). I'm now recalling all the awards BCN won back in the 80's - successive years I believe and the more I travelled around the country, I realized that they were the best= hands down.

I thought this was fantastic from beginning to end. Seeing all the people that work there, the celebrities you have met, the music everyone loved so much and counted on hearing in the best and worst of times. Great people. I am amazed at how everyone kept it together. And Bradley having to be on mic doing this last show without breaking down. I got so sad watching this and I really felt your deep feeling for the loss of your WBCN. It was done so well, but it's very hard to know how this must have had everyone feeling so empty. In studio and listeners. People who love music , really love it, have big hearts and deep souls. Thank you.

Yes and commercial radio is dead. We got great memories if this place the decline happened in the 1990s and a bad recession didn't help.

Irreplaceable - radio now is decades behind where WBCN was in the 70s. Morning Mattress with Charles Laquidara (wittier on his worst day than Howard Stern's best), Duane Ingalls Glasscock - the Six Dollar Clone, the Mattress Mishegoss contest, the Mighty Lunch Hour and classic lunch songs, the on-air talent striking in support of employees laid off when the station was acquired and Charles Laquidara playing "Everyone's A Winner" when they prevailed, and most of all the unprecedented freedom given the DJs and exposure to groups (Squeeze, Ultravox, Cars and countless others) not heard anywhere else before BCN
I left town before Bradley Jay but he did the Best Radio Station ever justice. Kicking off with Road Runner - perfect. The last song - hit it out of the park (best if no one spoils it)

So many memories... listening to them at work, on the way to school, skipping lunch with my friends and listening to Charles & Ken Shelton on the Big Mattress... meeting the Big Mattress crew as a local chef when the restaurant I worked for provided breakfast... Heading over to the Channel for a BCN lunch to see Bim Skala Bim... THE best DJs in the universe... Such a huge part of my life. There will never be another one...

Charles Laquidara is so correct that radio has changed. Big Business has changed the entire scene. Everything, EVERTHING sounds the same today. In a way, Satellite radio plays a variety of music with "DJs" but it is still not close to WBCN. Miss that time and radio.
