- In this episode of Red Cards, a fender bender gets carried away, leading to the death of New Orleans Saints defensive end, Will Smith. The perpetrator claimed self defense, saying Smith was the aggressor. Renowned defensive end Will Smith was leaving the French Quarter Festival when security cameras show him lightly rear ending another vehicle.
An altercation ensued, culminating in the other driver, Cardell Hayes firing shots at Smith and his wife, killing the retired football player. Smith family publicist, Lauren Renschler, called it “sick irony” that a New Orleans icon would die in the most typical New Orleans fashion - murder by gun violence. When Hayes was convicted, some rejoiced, while others wondered what would have happened if the roles were reversed, and “Saint Will” was the one claiming self defense.

This whole story is unfortunate. Smith should have pulled over once he bumped the car. But even though he didn't Hayes should have never bumped his vehicle in retaliation. Lives forever changed over a vehicle bump that probably did little to no damage, smh.
And people shouldn't try to be vigilantes like Hayes. Call the cops and let the law handle it for you, maybe following Smith just enough to give the police the information they need

@henree simp True but how he retaliated after Smith just left is classified as Vehicular Assault and Smith was justifiably upset as a result of purposely getting rammed into. I'm not saying what either one of them did was right, but committing multiple crimes including murder means you need to spend some time in prison. There were other options.

Hayes shot him EIGHT TIMES, with most of the bullets striking Smith in the back. Hayes may not be responsible for initiating the altercation, but you can't damn near empty the clip into an unarmed person and still claim self-defense.
Smith couldve been going back to his car to get his gun, hence the shots to the back. If some drunk dude that was swinging at me goes back and reaches into his car you can bet that id put eight bullets in his back fearing for my life.

With that in mind, Smith got shot on the left side of his body, glove compartment is on right of the car. Smith could have put his right side of the body inside the car could be perceived as someone who's trying and retrieve his weapon.

This is a systemic issue in the possession of a firearm without proper training and situational awareness. Proper training in the use of and possession of firearm and for self defense should always emphasize the defense in removing the "threat". When a law is written to emphasize that self defense is allowable to "kill" in a particular state, it now renders the jury to look at the shooting as "shoot to kill" as opposed to "shoot to eliminate the threat". So if it was one shot or two and he neutralized the threat, he might have been acquitted on self defense. Without proper understanding of the use of the firearm in self defense and cause and effect...which we see all too often with concealed carry (mind you I am concealed carry self defense advocate)...people cross over past the point of no return and in the heat of the moment it was too late! It was said once that you train and educate on the use of the firearm 99% so when you cross over to the 1% you have made every assessment and effort necessary before doing so. Sad because as a die hard Saints fan it was a sad day. As a human it was a sad day for this man because I don't believe he was a killer...but everything was stacked up against him the second he engaged a New Orleans Saint and unloaded most of his pistol's "magazine" into the back of a man. Tough situation!!!! Wish it never happened for all involved!

You have to shoot until the threat is gone. People have been shot 7 times or even more before and still survived long enough to shoot back. Legally, even 20 shots would have been justified in that situation. Also, real life isn't like the movies, where one or two shots creates a huge explosion of blood and an intense bodily reaction from the person being shot. The MOST COMMON thought in the heads of police officers who legally shoot in self-defense is that they are missing their shots EVEN THOUGH THEY AREN'T because they don't immediately see the reaction. Hayes probably didn't even realize Smith had been hit by all of those shots.

I've always said that people who feel powerful while carrying a gun shouldn't be carrying one. I understand Hayes mother being heartbroken but come on you’re son did something horrible and unnecessary. However, Hayes stayed at the scene, that’s rare. He might’ve been railroaded but he put himself in that position. He should’ve gotten the plate number and called 911

I feel for Cardell's mom/family. I believe the ppl in the barber shop when they say they knew him to be a good person. But 3 things bother me 1) When Smith hit and ran- that car bump was not serious enough to chase Smith down and violently hit the back of his car. This New Orleans. Why would u do that? 2) Smith was walking back to his car and was shot in the back at close range- 8 times. EIGHT. Times. That's not fear, that's anger. 3) He shot the wife. She saw him shoot her. He shot her. The F&%K why? This took a lot out of our city. Sharply divided. Prayers for all the families involved.

Did you watch the video? He didn’t shoot the wife, Smith did. They covered that up. As far as the initial accident, of course you go after the car that just hit your very expensive car and ran-I would. You are also forgetting that Smith was drunk off his ass and very aggressive to the point he went for his loaded gun where he accidentally shot his wife. I do agree with you about the eight shots though-very excessive.
@Marco Miranda Smith's gun was found still in the holster tucked between the seats and had not been fired. Hays shot 9 shots that night. All 9 casings were from his gun. The court documents are online. It is what it is.
Wait for Smith to come back out of his vehicle. If he's got a gun, shoot. Hayes opened fire too early, which makes him guilty.

NO the question to ask is why did Hayes abruptly stop his car abruptly and for no reason! He did that intentionally to lure Smith out his car! Hayes was stalking the police officer that killed his dad saw Smith having dinner with the officer and decided to seek revenge!

The fact that they found a loaded gun in Smiths car changes things for me if you are already drunk, have threatened to fight me, then you are making a B line for the car thats self defense.
Shooting someone in the back 7 times is never self-defense. Secondly, he had already shot him in the chest before he was moving to his car. It is not self-defense to kill an unarmed man and shoot his pregnant wife because you think he's gonna do something.
LeadAntagonist if he was already shot in the chest as you say and still able to move to his car he could still be perceived as a live threat plus he was the aggressor and also had a gun in his car. I think people are just getting caught on the amount of times he shot but these aren’t trained shooters if I feel my life is in danger I can’t shoot you enough.

Will's crash was an accident and the crimes surrounding it would have netted him jail time if reported, but instead of doing what any normal person would do. Hayes chases him down and smashes into him. He initiated the altercation, has a gun on him, but suddenly he fears for his life?
My heart breaks for both families. If Cordell is rly a good man, this will haunt him forever. I don't understand how Smith had gun powder on his hands. They made Smith look like a saint but he was drunk driving & hit & running, it's a tragedy but I believe Cordell panicked or truly feared for his life or he wouldn't have pulled that trigger 8 times

If Smith was going for his gun, I ask myself, would I wait for him to grab it and begin emptying the clip into me? I don't think that I would empty my clip into his back first, but it's easy to say that. I wasn't there under that pressure.

This was very well put together. Never knew the details of this case until I watched this. I always thought cardell was dead wrong but after watching this I kind of changed my perspective. Though I still think 8 shots was unnecessary.
