How To Clean/Lube Stanley Ratchet Wrench (89 819 Cr-V)

- I disassemble, clean, lubricate and re-assemble a Stanley 1/2" Drive Pear Head Quick Release Ratchet Wrench (model 89-819 Cr-V). I bought this wrench for $5 at a thrift shop. It worked fine. But I love taking things apart. And I am always interested in seeing the different mechanisms in these ratchet wrenches. So I took the opportunity to make a video. I will probably be keeping an eye out for more ratchets as they are kind of fun to work on. I used Super Lube Synthetic Grease to lube the main drive parts, and Tri Flow spray oil to lube the quick release.
Old, dried grease is the main cause for ratchet wrenches to start slipping or stop working well. And lack of lubrication causes the small ball that holds the sockets on to fail.

I was just about the throw my wrench out cause it was working. So I took it apart and just made it worse, this video showed me I was missing the springs so I was able to find them and fix my wrench. It's working just like new now, thanks

As I understand it, S-K uses the same Super Lube in their ratchets. I picked up some vintage S-Ks and took them apart and lubed them up with that stuff and - WOW - the improvement in the action was amazing. Those ratchets were dry as a bone when they arrived, but now I am sure they will last for many decades to come.
Thank you for the upload. I have this and the 3/8 and 1/4 which all came from a socket set. Unfortunately the plastic part is quite delicate and the 1/4 became inoperable. I understand there is a warranty and Stanley will replace it but I paid a little more and replaced them all with Gearwrench.
Honestly they all break the same I've got a little pile going of 3/8 ratchets of all brands broken at the square. Stanley and gear wrench included

i use mine with a claw type oil filter wrench and it gets regularly soaked in oil and it seems to love it lol :P
no problems at all with the selector, slipping, or anything and runs smooth as butter and ive never had it open

Surprised you didn't use a magnetic bowl for the screws and bearings. Those things have a habit of disappearing even when they're right in front of you.
I just disassembled my 91-930 and springs and ball bearings went flying. I wish I had seen this video before, but I managed to figure it out. Except for the ball bearing springs....which were on the floor.

Left a rachet in the car in the winter and it built ice on it witch melted and ended up siezing it and 5 mins later works perfect
I think adding lubrication to the release button/ball bearing mechanism is important. I've had extensions (they just had a spring with a ball bearing, no release mechanism) actually rust enough to make the extension hard to use, and ever since that I've added a bit of lubricant to them.
It's kind of a shame that Stanley moved over to the plastic mechanism inside the ratchets, I actually remember when they did that, it was only about 3 years or so ago. Before the components inside were all metal. They must feel comfortable making that piece plastic though, they still have lifetime warranties which is nice.
I have a toque wrench where the ball got rusted and stuck inside, so it wouldn't hold the socket on. Dousing it with penetrating oil and Tri-Flow, I got it loose, now it works great again.
Yeah, I was a little surprised to see a plastic part inside there. The wrench looks older than 3 years though.
The new 72 tooth ratchets are all metal inside.
These Stanley ratchet (that all metal mechanism serie) are excellent ratchets.
You can get them on sale quite often and if you keep em out of humidity / freezing / rust and grease em up they are lifetime tools.

Why Didnt You Use The 3-In-1 Lube For The Ball Bearing On The Quick Release Like You Do On The Other Ratchet? Is There A Difference Between The Two?
My Stanley 89-818B 3/8 inch pear head ratchet fell apart and now I'm missing one of the two screws. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement? I am desperate because the only other option is to completely replace the entire unit... thank you
I'd contact Stanley and just ask for some. I bet they'd send you some.

It's a 1/2 ratchet use some more grease just 1/4 is were you use a little grease
What if the ball bearing is stuck the one that sinks in when you press the button? Can that be fixed as well?
AntzBoogie Soak it with penetrating oil repeatedly. And then push it in with a screwdriver o break it loose. Then try to get oil in past the ball.

Almost identical to the 91-930(around 10 bucks at Walmart etc.) The only difference appears to be the selector switch on this is some kind of metal.
What size torque driver did you use?

I have a question. I have a Stanley ratchet that when I'm tightening and ratcheting, it flicks it self into reverse. What is wrong with it? Cheers
You are maybe bumping the lever. Or the spring is weak. Or the mechanism is gunked up and not holding well. Try cleaning and lubing it and see it that helps.
I got it a few weeks a go brand new and nah mate I'm not bumping the lever

I can’t be bothered to go out at night and get a torx to open mine up so I watched this and realised what a shit design it is. The ratchet head is very sloppy and there’s a lot of play. That plastic thing holding the pawl to it isn’t under a lot of compression. Compared to my other ratchets which are tight as a nun’s nasty this Stanley is driving me nuts
I prefer my Craftsman wrenches.
I bought a 1/2” set from a yard sale for loose change. Sockets ect are ok but I thought the ratchet was broken. Nope. It’s just shit 😂
