That used to be the case, way back when, but in regards to domestic disputes between a married couple, as in domestic violence. The police wouldn't interfere in those situations, as the law saw it as a personal issue between a husband and wife. But that was a long time ago! But, in these days, it doesn't matter how you're related - if you coot a crime against a family member, you can/will be arrested and charged for it!!

I'd have filed a police report AND gone to the charity shop with proof of ownership and demanded my DVDs and box back and sue them with receiving stolen property if they didn't return them. As someone who used to be a mover and move furniture an the like for people I know damn fucking well that not all furniture can handle moisture like for some kinds of wood an metal used in furniture you can't let get wet/soaked because for some kinds of wood used in furniture depending on how well/good the wood used was treated some wood can actually warp an expand when it gets wet because the water would seep into the wood making it weaker an can cause the wood to splinter an crack after some time(it doesn't happen instantly it happens gradually) and some metal components can actually rust if they get wet
