My preferred method is finding a good old jewelry box from a thrift store, already has lining, got a big one for my fountain pens and a smaller for the dip pens, got small compartments for everything you need
@@Doodlebud Har. Not all that fancy but as I do like to buy a mug when travelling they include mugs from Vietnam, Iceland, and Switzerland. Fun, or at least funnish.
I don't like either rum or cigars, but the boxes got a thumbs up from me. As a Swede, I store all my pens in an IKEA shelf with a fabric box I can't remember the name of where I keep the pens in their original boxes. The pens I got without boxes I make origami style boxes for. I have an old phone box that just happened to fit a bunch of those, which then makes it about the size similar to other pen boxes. I tend to keep a few too many pens inked at a time, resulting in that they stay inked a very long time. So I usually like the digging and cleaning and changing out my active pens whenever I run out of ink in one.
@@Doodlebud IKEA:s are pretty far apart, so growing up we had about 170 km to the closest one. Going there was an almost religious pilgrimage. So yes, for all other everyday needs, there are plenty of other stores. 😂
Doodlebud is CarpenterBud, EngineerBud,CreativeBud and all around CoolBud! You have great taste with the Kraken rum. If you put your eggnog ingredients into a blender, would it enhance the flavor? Thank you for your presentation. Take care.
@@Doodlebud Personally, I think you've made a superb job! I def would order some of those grooved boards from you. Have you thought about selling them in the future?

Nevertheless, I am a crafter, maker, or whatever you want to call it these days, and I want to try making one of these with cardboard, a cigar box and vintage velvet for the lining. Great job Doodlebud! You have inspired me! Thank you! Lisa
Wow - This is intense stuff which requires carpentry skills/craftsmanship, tools and of course Cigar boxes ! I’m someone with ‘none of the above’, so a $50 36 pen case is serving its purpose !
Hey DB. I started with the cigar box and Kaizen foam. Then evolved to a much larger flap top box from Michaels and again the Kaizen foam. Finally found an old beat up wooden engineers tool chest, refinished beautifully and added flocked pen trays from PSI which holds over 100 pens. I will definitely steal your routered tray technique. Love it.
@@Doodlebud You can buy those "heated knifes" (don't know the actual name) that cuts through foam like butter. I think the cutting tool on a router might make for a jagged edge since foam is softer.
@@Doodlebud The Kaizen foam is layered to remove by gentle manipulation with your fingers. I draw parallel lines 3/4 of an inch apart, lay out the pen centered on the line. I purchased 2 scalpels and a cubic butt-load pf replaceable blades and cut into the foam as close I as I can get to the pen without damaging my lovely instrument of ink dispersion. I peel out enough foam to allow the cigar / phallic shaped object of my affection to fit in snugly. Pen won't roll out of its cradle, great protection and safety.
Hmmm, the “give the man a cigarrrr” box use as fountain pen holders is really cool 😎😎😎! I don’t know if I’ll try it, but excellent instructions on how to 👍🤩. All the best for a wonderful Christmas to you and your family. GB DB 🙏
I'm convinced that you are the same guy from the AvE channel. Your guys voice is almost identical, both Canadian, and craftsman. That would be one hell of an alter ego and id be so stoked if AvE was into fountain pens haha.
Pretty cool setup you have in there :). I don't have a router but I like those cigar cases. Where do you get them from? Personally I like to see my pens. So here is another idea if you want (or anyone else). I'm using the jewellery acrylic cases. The best acrylic 5 drawer cases are at Muji store :) (hint on your last video; whenever you go back there) look for the 5 drawers one! The width is long enough to to accommodate pens as long as 15.4cm. And on length you can add up to 16 pens / drawer... so a box can hold up to 160 pens. I use the thinnest dowels I can find at HomeDepot and thick paper (cheap water color paper sheet is perfect) to create my base and separate the slots; and then from Michael's store I buy the sheets of velvet-ish material with glue on one side and lay it over the dowels and base paper. Results are pretty snazzy and I get to see what pens are where and in what drawer :). I have them put inside a bookcase with square shelf from Ikea with an LED light above them. Makes for a pretty view at night :).
I've made a few similar boxes for gifts this year. I like decoupaging the outside with themed pictures... old maps, flowers, vintage labels, art, etc... I add some decorative trim and hardware if possible. I'm far from creating anything decent with the router yet, so I use a Dremel and and a sheet of polystyrene for the inserts. They turned out great. Thanks for the eggnog tip!
My favorite style is the wooden cigar box, however I prefer the grooved board to stay in its rustic, natural form. Maybe with some brown wood stain 🤔... But I know you can burn your logo into the wood with some pretty basic equipment. What do you think? It can be a much more affordable & a rather easier option (especially if you're planning on selling those babies & manufacturing them in bigger quantities). Love the end result anyways 🤗 !!!
If I get into making & shipping them they're be branded for sure. I have an old mini treasure chest style box I bought at a garage sale for $2 that I want to finish. Think it would be great just with wood and stain as well.
I just picked up a balsa wood box with a window from Dollarama for, I think $3. It's called a memory box and the window is supposed to hold a photo. Just remove the piece of wood that is meant to hold the photo in, paint and you have a nice display box. If you don't have a router, look for floral foam and cover with felt. Also check out the tools section - they have some nice plastic boxes with sections for nibs, cartridges, converters, etc. These are $3-4 for small or large.
What a cool and clever idea! Cigar boxes are useful for all kinds of storage….I keep my makeup in some of them. Could also use unfinished wood boxes too…Joann fabrics has them. A cornice box runs about $20 but you can routinely get half price coupons. And I laughed at the adult beverage tip but damn that sounds right good!!!! There’s a bottle of we’ll aged Puerto Rican rum in my liquor cabinet calling my name now! Lol
I've made one already. Keep it on my desk. I have a GIROLOGIO 24 PEN CASE for the rest of my pens that was gifted to me, and I still have lots of room.
Just a question from my "neurotic" room efficiency/mechanically disinclined mind, would you be able to fit one more slot if you moved over some slots more to the edge and/or left less room in between slots? I say this in all humility as i have no experience with such projects, just a question you sound like you can answer either from failed previous experimentation or actually knowing the dimensions of room to work with, just looks like there's JUST enough room for one more with tighter measuring. Regardless, God bless sir, Merry Christmas & thanks for teaching me so much on your channel!
The spacing is about as tight as possible to keep the ridges from chipping & a smooth enough transition for the cloth. But on on of them in the video for sure, I coukd have for another goove if I laid out the spacing different. Just have to lay out first, then measure the offset from the centre then proceed with using my 1" spacers as in the vid
It's a way of life here 😅. Especially when you work in a machine shop and are constantly dealing with tooling and materials of all sizes. Ask a Canadian the speed limit & distance when driving, it's all KM. Buy a house and its in sqft. Buy bulk food at the store and it is in grams. Ask how much you weigh.... Pounds 😵💫

I actually like the smell. Was sort of the appeal. I even have the cedar piece with some of them to enhance the smell. So no,.... they re not smell free 😜
Yeah no window on them, but I kind of like the look. Gives people a bit of a surprise when I open the box up. But could maybe do it on one of the solid wood boxes as it has enough strength to hold up
I don’t have a wood shop and/or fancy tools … but I think I’m gonna buy some foam pedicure toe separator thingies and hot glue them to a cigar box and drape them with some velvet , et voilà!
Beautiful craftsmanship with ample attention to detail. Looks great. Personally, I find that cigar boxes take up too much space. I prefer leather or fabric cases that hold from one to three dozen pens. Is an Eggnog without eggs really an Eggnog? Seems more like a Milk Punch to me. The Brooklyn Eagle noted in 1873, speaking no doubt from experience, Milk Punch is “the surest thing in the world to get drunk on, and so fearfully drunk, that you won't know whether you are a cow, yourself, or some other foolish thing.” That's my kind of drink. 🥳 Cheers !
