You have the two dressers from Ikea that you took the wheels off. You said you were running out of space - you have the drawer with note books that could be used and the notebooks moved, maybe to the top drawer of the first two drawer you showed us.
That was great fun to see -- thanks for sharing! I have an unusual storage system for some (not all) of my pens. I keep them in 6-pen rolls from Rickshaw, which I leave flat and stack in a drawer. Most people would not prefer this because you can only see the tops of the pens, but I know what's where, and the pen rolls keep them secure. I have a few 12-pen rolls that I fold in half for the brands of pens I have more of, and a shorter roll for pocket pens. This method dramatically increases the capacity of the drawer. I have 12 pen rolls in one drawer (total capacity 84) plus a 12-pen Penvelope from Franklin-Christoph for my Sailors. This system is space-efficient and colorful. It wasn't an intentional choice at the beginning; I just started accumulating pretty pen rolls. 😏
Good timing with this video - I’ve just started looking at pen storage and given I enjoy working with leather I’m looking for ideas of things to make. I actually made my first pen storage two days ago - kangaroo leather outer, suede lined single pen roll. All these storage options give me ideas though.
Just came across this video, and I can only say that I would love a 2 hour version on this where you go into more details with some of the pens and inks. 10/10 video!
I have the Ikea Alex and all of my inks are grouped by manufacturer. I purchased the bamboo silverware tray and it fits perfectly inside but you can use any pretty cardboard box lids to create more structure and stop things sliding around. Having my inks grouped and lined up is very pleasing and I also add stickers to the top swatching the color.
Thanks for sharing. When initially looking at the video description, I was thinking I'd start this but would likely skip. NOPE! I loved seeing both the collection and the various storage options - it's great to see that you don't just have 20 ikea shelves full! You have quick a different, ecclectic, and wonderful storage system that both means something to you and is also liberating to me to know that my current rubbermaid tub is appropriate now and gives me hope of eventual future upgrades. Thank you so much for sharing, David!
Thanks for showing your pen related storage containers. I really enjoyed the video. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who uses a variety of storage containers. Great video! :)
Very nice tour of your storage. I am more pedestrian. I use cigar cases that are lined with velvet from Gurhka, pen portfolios that hold 48 pens, each and a storage box that hold my pen cases and supplies like nibs, pen sleeves, syringes, eye droppers and silicone grease.
Great vid. And very helpful,as I have arrived at (again) the point at which it is the time to rethink an implement a net pen and paraphernalia scheme. Thank you.
That was a fun video to watch. I have been storing my pens in a variety of soft cases including two similar to the zippered pen case you purchased from Amazon. I may have to get a wooden case at some point. If my spouse complains about my pen and ink collection, I'll point him to this video 😂
You have some really nice storage boxes David! Some day you should put together videos of all your pens, like a video for all the Pilots, one for Sailor etc. I'd love a tour of your pens. Your ink collection is amazing too! I would never live long enough to even use 1 drawer of yours up.
Awesome display. My ink selection is about half of yours but I’ve never launched into Asian inks. And I have most of mine in Ashton zip cases on my bookcase.
You have some very nice storage options. With so many different boxes, do you ever forget where a pen you want to ink up is stored at. Watching the video, I kept thinking if this were me, I would always get confused as to which box are my Pilots in, and is this pen with my Sailors, or with my favorite pens, etc.
I'm pretty good about knowing where everything is. With my 48-pen cases, there are several...so I might know it's in one of them, but not remember which one.
Thank you for sharing this with us, picked up some great ideas that I'll be checking out (especially the Ikea ink storage, as I'm having difficulty fitting some of my bottles in what I use now). A quick tip for folks looking for some available, inexpensive (usually), and to my mind good looking storage - I use an old wooden cutlery holder / canteen (rosewood in my case), depending on the inserts you can fit most small to medium size pens for sure, and some of the slots / trays will take larger, only cost me around $20 at a flea market.
I have any number of cases, rolls, cabinets, and sleeves that I store my motley collection of pens. I am humbled to see your thoughtful and well-organized storage solutions. I have much to think about...
Great storage ideas. I really like the hand made cases. If I find the right box I plan to make one. I was wondering if you keep the manufacturer’s boxes the pens come in? I’m somewhat new to the hobby so I’m curious about what other people do with all the boxes.
In my bedroom, I have a chest of drawers, which pulls out to become a dressing table. Ignoring the fold up mirror, it makes a great writing desk/pen workbench. I have a somewhat more conservative ink collection than you, so it doesn't take up space, and I keep most of my pocket pens in small side drawers, and larger pens in a series of 6-pen pouches, though I'm forever reorganising them. Most space is taken up by tools, spares, cartridges, nibs etc. And I manage, just about. But I'm thinking of evicting some clothes from the cabinet to make more pen space. 😄
Oh my!!! What a hoard!! You will never use it all in your lifetime, ha ha!! I want to come and play at your house. Thank you for sharing with us. I love the harbor freight box and your writing desk. How many people do you write to? Family? Friends? Pen Pals? So many questions. Again thank you so much for sharing. Great ideas for pen storage.
Mainly viewers and friends. I have always said that if anyone writes me, I promise to write back. My P.O. box address can be found in the notes below every video.
@@FigbootonPens You are such a neat man. Sounds corny, but I really enjoy your channel. You just aren't around enough. Maybe writing to you is an idea? Thanks for being you. God bless
I’ve been wanting the Galen pen case in green but I keep buying pens instead! I have some old Montegrappa presentation boxes so I store them in those. I also have a Monte Blanc zip pouch for single pen.
What do you do for long-term storage? Ostensibly, you rinse them clean; but, is there anything you can do to prevent the nib or fill system from going to rust?
Did you do anything extra to reinforce the drawers you store ink in? I tried to store my ink in these exact Alex drawers, but I found the flimsy cardboard bottom would kind of sag down into the drawer below and eventually get dislodged and cause issues.
Great video. I know you have a Pilot Custom Urushi which is a pen I also own, and I am having a heck of a time finding a case for it. I would like to find a case just for this pen and I was hoping that maybe you could suggest one that you have used. Thanks.
Hi, I love the 5 pen leather case you mentioned early in the video. But, I can’t quite tell if you are saying “Launcher” or Mauncher?. Do you have more info on that specific case? Thanks!
Found them! Wancher. Sadly, all the smaller cases are totally sold out. Sigh. Back to the drawing board! Great video. I will certainly be ordering some simple pen slots from gopens! Thanks for that lead!! You have an incredible collection! 💚💚💚
I only wished you mentioned which pens/storage are inked. I assume that most of the pens are clean and empty. The 4 your load up on Sundays are inked. Do you empty the ones you remove?
I have significantly reduced the number of pens inked. The 5 pens for the week, as well as a couple on my desk are inked, but other than those, everything else is clean.
@@FigbootonPens Thanks David. Makes perfect sense. I probably have too many inked and will have to think through which I really want to keep inked. Currently, I have a mechanical pencil, an inked Decimo and two Tactile Turn rollerballs on my desk that are used every day. I just don't have a daily need for writing. Being a graphic designer.
That's a lot of pens. I only have about 75 pens and about 20 bottles of ink. Pens I'm likely to use are stuck in a thingamajig I rigged up from 6 cardboard tubes and some tape, which sits on my drawing table. Everything visible and instantly available. The pens I don't use are in a little cardboard box on the shelf. And I have another little cardboard box in which 20 square Noodler's bottles nest together nicely. I do have other brands, but decant them into Noodler's bottles for convenient storage. All this works for me because I am indifferent to likely surface damage caused by pens clanking together. And quantitatively my needs are fulfilled with
I very much like the Noodler's ink bottles. They're a great size and they store (nest together) in such a nicely compact manner and their caps are easy to label to be read from "above."
I find it surprising that you’re the only one who made a comment about the cost of such a collection. Others had to have thought the same thing. I wondered to myself how one could afford such a collection; going with the Occam’s Razor philosophy I hypothesize that David has a really good paying job combined with the fact he probably gets to keep a lot of the pens he reviews or gets them at a very steep discount. I do believe David has integrity so I don’t think it’s a quid pro quo situation; good review for a free pen/huge discount. However, I don’t believe he has addressed the subject so one can only guess. However, if you want to look at the situation deeper. Let’s take a look at we know about David shall we… he is from San Diego, he has golfed on some of the finest golf courses in the world, enjoys Rubik’s cubes, loves Fred Rogers red ink, is a master at slight of hand, has tangoed with the A.T.F. and finally travels abroad and to “pen shows”. Option 1: He comes from extreme wealth and it could be a trust fund situation. San Diego is an extremely affluent area especially La Jolla. Golfing those courses is very expensive and he has a lot of shirts if you catch my drift. He had access to the finest education which cultivated an interest in puzzles and the finer things in life such as magic, premium entertainment (Mr. Rogers, Alfred Hitchcock etc.) and travel. As a wealthier person he rubs shoulders with a lot of politicians and had issues with a government contract for the A.T.F. Option 2: “David” is a hitman (a good one though like John Wick who doesn’t intentionally target innocent people) who gets paid a lot of money. After serving overseas on a special mission he was sent to a military prison for a crime he didn’t commit. He promptly escaped from his maximum security stockade to the North Carolina underground and has been hiding in plain sight ever since. No one will suspect a fountain pen enthusiast. Southern California is major military hub for which he trained as a military sniper at the naval base in San Diego. Golfing is a precision sport. A skill that he has in spades. Which is further confirmed by his job as a data analyst. Rubik’s cubes and magic require high intelligence as well as very dexterous eye-hand coordination. Traveling is something he must do for “work”. The A.T.F. has been trying to catch him for a long time. By his own admission they couldn’t catch him at his “old job”. And we finally come to the smoking gun, Fred Rogers Cardigan Red. I mean c’mon, David says this is one of his favorite inks. Everyone knows Fred Rogers was a sniper and the color “Cardigan Red” seems very similar to the color of… well, you get the point. Like a Hitchcock film, people are not always as they seem so you make the call.
