I would suggest... Magnets. Probably either in the blade or in the hilt, and wherever that spot meets up on the hammer. You can get both ceramic and neodymium magnets at both craft and hardware stores for pretty cheap, and you don't want to give the hammer a tgeatrical swing just to end up with the head flying off and hitting someone in the face...

Use fishing magnets, much stronger grip then neo and it would fit nice in the foam.
