My dad grew up with a rotary phone and he tell us "You kids are so lucky. I never want to even *look* at one ever again. You know how hard it was to re-enter a number after you fucked it up?"
No sympathy lmaoo i grew up in the 90s with an old pay phone as one've our primary home phones. Entered the number wrong? Hang up and start over my good bitch lmao. Also dialing a rotary phone is soooo satisfying lmao.
6:27 I really need old people to understand that the reason those “don’t try this at home” things exist is because people have tried it at home. In the past. In their generation.
And also, not every "old fart" state of mind is an " ok boomer" state of mind. There's a difference between complaining that people have it too easy today, and just being confused by the new tech and frustrated with everything you're expected to keep up with. It's the difference between HATING change, and just being _stressed_ about change, and afraid of specific changes (for example, I wouldn't call someone a boomer for being afraid of the anger in social media or the childishness in politics)
7:00 The funniest thing to me is when they pull up the “Car manuals used to tell you how to adjust your valves, and now it tells you not to drink battery acid” 1. Technology has advanced (unlike these people) so you don’t need to adjust your valves anymore. 2. Those warnings are added in retrospect and my car from 96 already has the warning which means that the generation that still had valves that needed to be adjusted also drank the battery acid.
6:54 Safety precautions are always written in blood. The fact that the “don’t try this at home” message is even a thing is specifically because some people tried it at home.
I promise the "men aren't persuasive anymore" girl isn't like all of us. Most of us want to be respected, not chased. Women like her are not worth it, people who lie about what they want because they want to get you to "try harder" are displaying the red flags of dishonesty and playing with people's feelings for their amusement.
Bullshit. What women SAY they want and what they actually want are different. Women SAY they want a nice guy. Multiple studies have been done which found women rank sociopathic and psycopathic men the hottest.
I mean, toxic mentalities don't evaporate overnight. At one point as a girl, she learned that men being persistent and pursuing women was the way things were supposed to be. With something like that ingrained from childhood, it's hard to change perspective and expectations.
11:10 do they mean they paid €12 *EXTRA* to be placed in a window seat? Because then that’s not fair they didn’t get a seat with a window, even if it’s a cheap upgrade. It means they paid €12 extra to be furthest from the aisle

18:09 can confirm this, when i was in sophomore year of high school, i did a research paper on how taking breaks is really good for people and found out that Americans, on average, are more overworked/do more hours of work than Japanese workers, who are notorious for being overworked.
@azeplayt4546 Idk how it is in other countries, but in America, a lot of jobs aren't work until certain tasks are completed. It's doing a certain task(s) for a required amount of time and you get paid depending on your time working. The problem is, wages are decreasing so much here, that working overtime is basically required.
the most surprising thing about that part is how nobody in the replies seemed to get the joke???? bro already did the conversion, this is the math equivalent of not being able to rember the name of the cat from Garfield
“Internet ruined the kids”? In that case, I’d like to introduce you to the Dewey Decimal System. The equivalence of “Error 404 file not found” is going to the librarian for an inter-library loan because your library doesn’t have it. And if you don’t know the exact book you’re looking for, then even God himself can’t help you.
If you do academics this still exists btw. If you are looking for a specific local graph/study you know actually exists but cant find the title, I’d advise to just forget it.
"Times have changed. I don't have access to encyclopedias with truly up to date information." Trust me, Robin. No one did. I was a teen in the 80's and my mother's encyclopedia was printed while I was still teething.
I was a trainee teacher in a public school outside of London england(That's the really expensive very exclusive kind). The encyclopedias were from before the seventies. This place charged seventeen thousand per student per term, multiply by three that's a lot of money. It was in an old Georgian estate but if you're picturing Hogwarts don't, it was more like Dachau.
The ones we had at my high school were like 20 years out of date, but we only just got early DSL in the late 90s at my high school and we couldn't got to just any website then. Plus, I don't think Google was out yet. It was Yahoo!, Web Crawler, or Ask Jeeves.
6:56 Also they didn't say "Don't try this at home" for stuff like the Road Runner image the meme is attached to because most children don't have easy access to a firework big enough to tie themselves to, so they couldn't try it even if they wanted to.
And there was an assumption, true or not, that parents would be there to prevent such stupidity Not that this assumption was significantly more true then than now, mind you, but it's still worth note
My late great uncle couldn't open his right hand all the way. He lit a firecracker in his hand and the fuse burned nearly instantaneously blowing it up in his palm. He was a dentist for 50 years. Youth is often foolish or reckless. If someone had told him to be careful around fireworks, he might not have done that.
@@Craxin01 My mom likes to tell the story of how she met my dad: "We were at a New Year's party, and I saw a boy with a firecracker in one hand, and a cigarette in the other. He lit the firecracker, threw the cigarette away and stared at the firecracker in his hand with the eyes of someone who suspects that something is very wrong, but hasn't quite figured out exactly what. When it exploded, I knew for sure I would have to marry this boy, or else he would not survive." How much of that story is true, I don't know. But it's still hilarious.😆

16:16 I lost all respect for PETA when they seperated a homeless man and his dog, clearly against the will of the dog AND the homeless man. Diogenes wouldn't give you the time out of his day to spit on your boots, PETA.
Oh I remember that. Yeh I think it might have been the widespread story of theirs that made me realise that they weren't just an animal rights group but a bunch of control freaks masquerading as an animal rights group
@@alexshinra6722I just looked it up. I can't send links in a YT comment because TH-cam doesn't like that and auto deletes any comment that includes a link. Basically what happened was there was a homeless man in Paris who had a little Puppy and the Activists said "the group had decided to act after receiving a report from a member of the public that the dog appeared to be drugged" and that their own observations seemed to reinforce this. Obviously this isn't true as the dog didn't react like it would if it was drugged and people knew that. They said they did it to prevent animal cruelty and thus brought the drugging in. In my opinion all they wanted to do was take his dog away because the man is homeless and therefore can't take care of a dog and that's animal cruelty (in their logic) which is probably one of, if not the worst, interpretation of animal cruelty to ever exist. They then put the dog up for adoption, meanwhile a petition gained over 50 thousand signatures to return the dog to the homeless man and in the end the dog was returned but as far as I could find the Activists still defended their actions. (Oh also the videos of this that got posted on TH-cam and Facebook seem to be taken down but it said they got over 1.5 million views) Ridiculous. I couldn't find any link to PETA tho. The name of the group is "Cause Animale Nord " and it's French so I don't know if it's linked to PETA in any way but since they also seem to be doing shady stuff that isn't the best thing for the animal they would be right at home with PETA.
Well.. they also put down a dog that was stolen, that day, out of its own, fenced in backyard... Note: They were sued by the parents and PETA lost in court. My sister and BIL also hate PETA... they went after their "profession" with a bunch of lies... they equated sheep shearing to torture and threw cow's blood all over a sheared sheep and used _that_ image to say "shearing sheep leaves them bloody, don't buy wool products!"

My go to response to an argument where the person making the dumb claim tells me to do my own research is to say "You obviously didn't. I'm not here to do your homework for you." Especially when I know the top 2 Google results would prove them wrong.
And does that work? Yeah no. Because in their mind, regardless of you bring objectively correct, they will never admit being wrong or truly think they are never wrong. The only response to them is to call the gay and leave.
27:40 finally someone with common sense. I have had many experiences where I have told someone from an older generation how I think having one of the most important times of my childhood during a global pandemic has negatively affected me and our generation in general but they always respond with something like “we had to live through 9/11” or “we had to hide under desks from bombs” (which we now have to do too because school shootings exist). Yes Ik we may not have the toughest childhood but that doesn’t make it any less mildly traumatic or life changing.
One problem doesn't cancel out another one. It is just like when people say "think how people are doing in Y country" That said, having lived my childhood under the overhanging umbrella of total and utter destruction of eveything, sets a couple of things in perspective. Not least that life is too short to care about bitching.
A *globa, deadly, long-term* pandemic is on par with as traumatic as a targeted, deadly, short-term attack. The people who suffered and died slowly deserve to be just as remembered as those who died near or in the towers, or on those planes. And we as humans who are still here today have to be the ones who prevent these disasters from happening again.
Ikr? People say "Think about X problems" and tbh, this might come off as cold or/and asshole-ish but I don't give a fuck. Others problems have nothing to do with mine, and their situation isn't going to make mine any better (hell, thinking about it just makes me feel worse)

23:09 “Men look at history and learn from past mistakes” had me laughing. Maybe because I live in a country where our last emperor (a man) started an obviously unwinable war, then about 30 years later a man *does the exact same thing* and proceeds to try invade Russia, fails at the *exact same tactic* as Napoleon. People still say that if he read a book maybe we would’ve won ww2, or at least lost later than we did.
@@MayoOverlord Not sure why OP is trying to suggest that WW1 wasn't winable for Austria/Germany from the get go, that's certainly not how the situation was. The problems only really started when the war stagnated and everybody was too stubborn to admit that it was only going to go downhill from there. The reality of WW1 is that the war in itself was pretty much unavoidable since the political climate had been tense for quite a while. Since the crownprince got assassinated (while trying to allevate the tension too) Austria was never going to just let it sit. Nothing at all suggested going to war would be an auto loss.
28:05 I get so mad when people pretend washing your hands is such a big deal. It takes 20 seconds. You do it after you take a shit, after you come home (because there IS proof that most buses/trains/shopping carts/etc. have faecal matter on them), before you eat, when you shower, if you had to clean your toilet or whatever... it's literally 20 seconds. Ten hand-washes take up four minutes tops of your daily 1440 minutes. Cop on, people.

And, amusingly: People are VERY offended by that. And actively try to censor and delete anything that goes against the strict gender norms in that area. I do A LOT of stuff that breaks gender norms. And I can confirm: Prawn sites and "famous people" within prawn are VERY aggressively against it xP Very much like those old movies where "I TOLD you not to compete in this race..." was a big thing.

25:51 - Someone else can probably better explain the Japanese side of this since I don’t know the language, but OP is complaining about a tutorial of naming the days of the month that some are formatted differently than the rest, making it difficult to learn/remember. The responder then demonstrates that English has the same type of issue with ordered numbers, in that a few of them (first, second, third) don’t conform to the conventions the rest do (fourth, fifth, sixth, etc). That’s the “Murder” here.
The Japanese names for the days of the month have similar kinds of issues. Some of them use the native Japanese numbers. These numbers are not commonly used any more. Some of them use the Chinese derived "Sino-Japanese" numbers. These numbers are what is commonly used for counting in Japanese now. Two use a weird mix between the Chinese derived numbers and the native Japanese numbers. Then the first just uses something completely different. I wonder if there is any natural language that doesn't have any quirks like this. One other thing I really love about English numbers is 444. Written out as words, this is four hundred and forty four. Why is forty forty, and not fourty.

23:26 I also want to point out that most people who do wish happy holidays do so using the plural, given that there's two special days, almost in a row (for Christians, at least, I don't know enough about other religions) : Christmas and New Years, seperated roughly by a week.
Exactly this! The other religious holidays I know of are: Hanukkah (Judaism), Kwanzaa (African American culture/African diaspora), and the Winter Solstice / Yule (Paganism) Edit: Spelling and fact-checking

I think it‘s wild that washing your hands ten times a day is considered to be a lot. I mean an average person goes to the toilet about 6 - 7 times a day. After each of these visits, if you don‘t wash your hands, you‘re gross - no matter if you are a germophobe or not. Also an average person has at least three meals a day. Before each of which you should wash your hands. That makes at least ten times a day. And we have not counted washing your hands when you come from outside.

13:54 as an explanation for this, (i heard) there was a study where they found that AC is more geared towards men's body heat rather than women's, making it sexist. It isn't sexist by intention, people don't think about it that much, it just seems to happen. I think sexist is a strong word for this due to the lack of intention tbh
Due to the tendancy for men to have higher positions in a company, and the bosses controlling the AC, when the boss turns the AC to what's comfortable, the people whoa rent wearing as much clothes get colder than whose who are.
That and the fact that women seldom wear enough clothes to work, in fact they often don't wear clothing to suit the weather in general. Of the women who complain about the temperature where I work, zero percent of them are wearing jumpers or long pants.
There's also the postmodern branding of "gender hormones", from the same era as when john money invented gender theory in 1953. Women's decreasing amount of testosterone was downplayed, on account of women doing no wrong if they spend evenings at home eating ice cream. For that reason they lost a lot of the regulatory function that NORMAL amounts of exercise helps ANY human body to develop, including body heat management, circulation that affects the possible complications with menstrual pain, and quite possibly their basic ability to birth sons that won't suffer from accumulating effects of low testosterone. But calling testosterone deficiency universal is of course SUPER sexist. Because equality is admitting that women don't need it, what are they gonna do with MALE hormones? Like a fish with a bicycle, well, what good is a FISH?
Something can be sexist (favoring one sex over another) without it being some form of chauvinism. Take dry cleaning. Women's blouses cost more to dry clean than men's dress shirts. Why? Standardization of men's clothing allow a form factor to be used on the dress shirts but not the women's blouses. If women did like men and wore something nearly akin to a uniform without any special style, it'd cost the same. Pink products that are otherwise identical to a blue or gray product often cost more to make because of the pink dye being more expensive. Some of the "pink tax" is ridiculous crap foisted on women by corporations, but some of it is pure selection bias.
@@Craxin01 Saying it's sexist has the inherent implication that it's done for the sole reason of one's sex, and doesn't have an underlying condition that can explain it. So i'mma have to disagree with this take due to the idea that 'if it can be explained fully without being directly linked to one's sex, it isn't sexism.'

(Oh also the videos of this that got posted on TH-cam and Facebook seem to be taken down but it said they got over 1.5 million views)
Ridiculous.
I couldn't find any link to PETA tho. The name of the group is "Cause Animale Nord " and it's French so I don't know if it's linked to PETA in any way but since they also seem to be doing shady stuff that isn't the best thing for the animal they would be right at home with PETA.
Unless they tried to do that TO Diogenes, at which point things could get ugly

The Japanese names for the days of the month have similar kinds of issues.
Some of them use the native Japanese numbers. These numbers are not commonly used any more.
Some of them use the Chinese derived "Sino-Japanese" numbers. These numbers are what is commonly used for counting in Japanese now.
Two use a weird mix between the Chinese derived numbers and the native Japanese numbers.
Then the first just uses something completely different.
I wonder if there is any natural language that doesn't have any quirks like this.

25:50 In Japanese, the days of the month are just named (number)+nichi, which would be the equivalent to saying "let's meet on 15day" in English, but the 13 days highlighted in orange on the picture don't follow this rule and instead need to be learned by heart. The first user is complaining about this, and the second user points out that English numbers have a similar number of exceptions.
So i'mma have to disagree with this take due to the idea that 'if it can be explained fully without being directly linked to one's sex, it isn't sexism.'

and the reason the internet isnt used in schools is because there is more to it then just information. kids use the Internet for information only when they need to find something about a game, a video or a TH-camr, and rarely anything else. using it is possible, but only if it is under the control of the SCHOOL, and NOT the Students. i grew up in this generation, so i have seen the how's and why's of it not working. use it sparingly and it wont be a problem and will in fact instead be a very useful tool. but as long as kids are allowed to just do whatever they want, it will end in catastrophe.
