A newbie fountain pen user - using the Platinum Preppy... bought the multiple pack from Amazon after watching one of your older videos about them! I actually enjoy the process of using the needle to refill the cartridges with different colored inks. Great video as always, Teoh. Two thumbs up!! :)

This is so informative. I too love to use my fountain pens with converters, but have a Pentel brush pen with cartriges. What ink do you use to refill that? Does is matter what kind of ink it is? Thanks for making these great videos!

I have the same question! I heard that some inks might mess up with the barrel of the Pentel brush pen so I'm scared. Also there are few inks where I live. I only can find Rotring rapidograph ink and Pelikan drawing ink (in the small square bottle) easily. I just buy a bundle of cartridges for my old trusty brush pen and hope I can make them last but I'm on my last one and haven't been able to buy another bundle. Hmmm. So, I was thinking if instead I could try ordering something online that is guaranteed to work great with my Pentel without damaging it. What can you recommend?

  • @Donna_G

When I got my LAMY Al-Star, I chose to get cartridges instead of the offered converter. The reason was that the converter held less ink than the cartridge. I can always refill the cartridge as I have been doing with my Platinum Preppy.
Have you ever eyedropper converted any of you plastic pens? My Preppy isn't and I'm not so sure that I will in the future. I use my TWSBI Eco much more often and it is a piston fill pen. When filled, it holds a lot of ink.

    • @teohyc

Great insight, Teoh! I'm quite new to fountain pen, so I bought one that's fairly affordable--a Pilot Kakuno. And I'm still using ink cartridges up until now since I'm not sure how to use ink converters 😂 so thank you, this is very informative and helpful!

Hi Teoh. Thanks for the information ^_^ I use converters mostly, but like cartridges for travelling, but have found that most of them are not waterproof. I do have Pentel pocketbrush cartridge refills though, which are perfectly waterproof. How can I test if this cartridge fits other pens that I own (not Pentel ones) - do you just size it up manually? What should I look for when testing the fit?

    • @teohyc

Great video...I've watched a bunch and look forward to watching more!
I have a couple questions ... hope that's ok 😳😬 I'm just learning out how to use a fountain pen (probably too old at 49 i know🙄). I love to sketch, ink and watercolor...I've always used the microns, but the tip is very sensitive and doesn't love the texture and I have to be extra careful and they dry up....I also have rheumatoid arthritis and in doing research I've seen that you don't have to hold the fountain pen straight up like I do with the micron and that there's no hard pressing, even if I'm just writing, so less stress on my hands. But, I know nothing. I need waterproof ink, which seems to not be what comes in the pen cartridge, so a friend just gifted me an inexpensive fountain pen to try (Amazon basics) which came with cartridges but reviews said the universal (think that's the term) converter would fit so she got me a set of 2 converters plus platinum carbon black ink.
One of my questions is this...when I went to put in my converter, it is really tight, but I am also terrified of breaking something so it scares me to use force. But I finally got it go on and the bottom black part of the converter (it looked clear of yours but is black on mine) went in but then there is a band of silver after the black and I'm not sure how far I should push it on and don't want to break anything but also don't want to fill and have ink go all over :/
So any help is greatly appreciated!!!!
    One more question...
I just LOVE the look of sort of messy loose ink lines with my watercolor. The nib it came with is fine, I'm wondering if I should also get (only when I can afford it) a pen with a Fude nib? Or are there better, but still very affordable, pens with all those nibs? Sorry for so many questions...I'm super excited but SUPER nervous to do it wrong :)
    Thanks again for the help!!!!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ink converter is supposed to be tight otherwise the ink may leak.
Don't worry about damaging the ink converter. You can't push it beyond the point that it's allowed to. And even if you damage the ink converter, a replacement is inexpensive.
That ring of silver is just for decorative purposes. As long as your ink converter isn't loose, and doesn't fall out on its own, it's tight enough.
You can use waterproof inks in ink converters and with fountain pens. Just make sure the waterproof inks you buy mention specifically they are safe for fountain pen use. For recommendations, watch this th-cam.com/video/5StYNJi7-hU/w-d-xo.html
And for fude nib fountain pen recommendations, watch this th-cam.com/video/YtN1V8-YnZQ/w-d-xo.html

@@teohyc hi!!! Thank you SO much for your help! I really appreciate it!
I've watched both of those videos you suggested a ton...an embarrassing amount😊 I'm older ad my brain doesn't retain to well.
I had asked you in another video which pen you used, just to get a frame of reference of what it looks like sketching and you said the Duke d2 fude nib...so would that be the same as the Duke 209 with fude nib? I just haven't found one with that exact d2 title and again, just don't want to mess up my choice as money is tight, well, real tight, but my husband knows my love and need for art so will find small ways to splurge for me when he's able, so don't want to buy the wrong one. And they seem to change color or look so what I see now seems to be a bit different. But I'll have to look on ebay as well, didn't think of that.
Ink that someone gabe me is the platinum carbon black...is that ok??
I just over your videos, your art is amazing and you explain things well and give so many options.

Some useless but interesting information, I was told by Cult Pens this was for the same reason as the smiley face on the nib, it's an entry level pen to encourage younger teenagers to use fountain pens. They decided teens would not use a converter but only easier disposable cartridges, so made it cartridge only. Other sketchers were already using it though, so it could easily be different now 😊

These little piston converters waste half the volume with the screw and piston mechanism. They only hold about half a ml which is tiny. Why not just large empty plastic tubes? You can get empty international long converters that I believe hold about 1.5ml. It just seems completely absurd to me that the empty plastic tube is not a more common system. About the only such system I've seen for sale is the Noodler's 308 empties, which hold a wopping 2ml - which is about what most piston fillers hold. But they only fit the Noodler's pens with push piston fillers like the Ahab. I mean, an empty tube is dead simple, no seals or fancy moving parts, can be refilled with a syringe, and like with prefilled cartridges you can carry a handful of them and swap them out if you ever run dry. And unlike piston, vac, or eyedropper pens, the ink cartridge is insulated from your hand heat, so very unlikely to warm up and burp ink.
