A great big thank you to the Opinionated Quilter! I have watched some of your videos and you are very precise in your instructions. You always get me wondering when you start a video about not liking this or that. I always find you interesting as to what your point will be as you move forward with your video. This is a good one! thank you!!! And I will admit that I do enjoy crumb quilting as I have about 50 years' worth... Uh huh! I've made only four while working on grandkids' stuff and finishing 50-year old quilts. COVID helped in this regard! Sew long my dear and see you in the next video!

Crumb quilts are only ugly when your colors are garish and loud. In muted or neutral colors, they're the most beautiful, homey, comforting things ever.

Maybe - if possible - they should be just in one colour, blue, red... that it doesn't look chaotic.

Looks just like a crumb quilt. I like crumb quilts just fine. Generalizing and saying ALL crumb quilts are ugly is not something I would say. The one you made in this video is basically, we could call it a "crumb quilt style" and it is nice. Not all crumb quilts are ugly, of course, IMO! If I have lots of scraps that are different sizes and angles I would rather make a crumb quilt than throw them away. I would rather make a blanket a homeless person could use, that is where quilting came from, USING what we have. If others think it is ugly, that is fine with me. I would rather make it and give it to a homeless person, and there are a lot of them where I live. "Ugly" is relative. Of course, everyone has a right to their opinion, even me!

You have some great ideas for using small scraps... BUT I don't agree that all crumb quilts are ugly. I always use a consistent solidish fabric when setting crumb blocks together, much the same as you do with your blocks. "Each to their own" when it comes to opinions, just don't call MY quilts ugly!

I'm in the camp that thinks MANY (not all) crumb quilts are ugly - and to me, that kind of "ugly" means too "busy", with no unifying element - especially with disparate color combinations (some of which I find almost gut-wrenching). So THANKS for pointing out a practical way to make a lovely quilt - easily and at a relaxing pace - with scraps on hand, AND with a unifying element that allows the eye to rest. After all, don't we want to rest under our quilts...?

I whole heartedly DISAGREE that crumb quilts are ugly. I love crumb quilting! I find it very relaxing and enjoyable, and I like the finished results. I have used crumb quilting as a way to build fabric from pieces that most people throw away. I saw an amazing video where a woman used monochromatic crumb quilting as the basis for applique. The results were absolutely gorgeous. I will say this though, the crumb quilts that I make are not 100% crumb pieces. I will alternate a solid block with a crumb block. I do agree that a solid crumb quilt of any kind (even the small rectangles you used in your quilt) is too much for me. For me I have to have some break in the chaos.

    • @SandyS.787
      @SandyS.787 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Agreed. I generally make crumb blocks somewhere shy of 8" square, then trim them as large as possible and sew them to background pieces (usually white) on all four sides (sometimes only 3 sides). This is not a precise method, but the white framing pieces can be trimmed to make square or rectangle block (haven't tried hexies). Then the blocks go into a grid of some sort (my fav. so far is 10X15" blocks, some vertical, some horizontal) to create the quilt top.. They leave plenty of room for creative quilting in between the crumb portions. Happy quilting!

I do so approve of your attitude toward small scraps--they are so much fun to work with, but only if the result is worthy of the effort. My brain doesn't handle wonky well at all and I am drawn to the orderliness and ease of construction of your video quilt. And I love that you have a hierarchy of scraps for the different scrap quilts you want to make. You set aside your longer pieces and only use the genuinely small pieces that are true leftovers. The addition of strips makes for a stunning quilt!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what one person loves another will hate.
Quilting is much same. Different styles for different people. I am not fan of log cabin but I take my hat off to those with the patience and ability to know how to mix and match fabrics, tones, colours etc.
I have had a go at strip quilt blocks, log cabin to make me face my bias against it, and I continue to try new styles just to see if I can do it not to make an entire quilt out of it.
Made quilts with printed fabric one side and fleece on the other and precut purchased binding. All three went to charity as lap quilts.
As someone already mentioned, each to their own.
Opinions stated are just that opinions. You don't have to agree with an opinion just accept that is how others see things.
    Happy sewing

Most quilters have a large square ruler in their arsenal (12x12)... each corner is 90 degrees, so one can just use their square ruler, instead of the Strip Tube Ruler as well...to make a 90 degree 'triangle' template.... and remember, it takes just as much time to make an Ugly Quilt as it does a Pretty Quilt!

Crumb quilts don't have to be ugly. In fact, I made one using 10" squares with the drop shadow, and it turned out great, if I may (humbly) say so. I'm working on one now that will be similar to the popular Hanging Gardens pattern, and I'm looking forward to seeing the results. I personally think it's unfair to say that crumb quilts in general are ugly. If you think outside the proverbial box, they don't have to be.

I prefer to call them 'Busy', rather than 'Ugly'. Someone put thought and effort, into them, just maybe not the way I would.
But who am I, or any of us, to really call someone else's creation, and work, Ugly? 🤷‍♀️ We all have our own tastes. Mine are just a bit quieter, pattern wise, even though I use different scale patterns, and many colors, I do like to coordinate them, and put in visual breaks, in the overall project.

I like the way you consider what colours go together. When you use all vivid pure colours, or all fall colours. Too many people throw every scrap they have from any colour family into their quilt, and that is ugly, whether it’s crumb or chip off the old block. I just heard someone call this an ‘original’ scrap quilt. It’s only original if you have nothing else. But there’s no excuse for it in this day and age when scraps are widely available. People need to not be so lazy. They need to consider whether this red that they’re putting beside this purple enhances it or dulls it down. Take time. Think about colour!!!

I had to chuckle to myself, when you said to use 2 1/2" squares for the centers. Lately, if I can get anything that size, it goes to my hexie project! I wrap, and baste, the entire 2 1/2" square around my hexie cardstock, to be put with others, to make my motifs. I am making diamond shapes with mine, to make as many different combos as I can, from the scraps I have. Some have 9, a center, with 8 surrounding it, or 4, with 2 different prints. It isn't a project I plan to do in any specific time frame, just something I can work on while camping, or between chores when I need to take a break. But, I guess I could call this a crumb quilt of a different type, using small pieces to make a beautiful quilt.☺️

Best video yet! I like your solutions to the ugly problem. I hope that you will also do a quilt on using up triangles trimmed from other projects. I especially want to know what your minimum is to keep for a triangle. The one exception I have found to ugly crumbs is where the quilter strategically uses crumbs in a color way to build up a fabric size and then uses in a traditional block, giving the effect of one fabric in the crumb part. I've decided that's mostly too much work for me.

Hello.. my concept of crumb quilting is making new fabric from small left over pieces.. how you construct a quilt block from that is up to the quilter. There is no rule that says you have to use them as a huge busy in your face type of quilt. You can easily make pinwheels or stars or half Sq triangle blocks or even center square of a churn dash . You can make I spy child quilts using them or even a rag quilt or patchwork quilt using repurposed denim or old sheets.. the uses are endless. There was a recent posting from quilting marine about how he made a skateboard quilt for a young man using crumb quilting..it's stunning.. I mention this as examples of ways to use your crumb blocks. For contrast you could use the crumbs as binding , borders sashings or on totebags. That's the way I see crumb quilting.. making new usable interesting fabrics from scraps.
    I agree about rulers..
    Happy quilting everyone

A straight plane piece of plastic without measurements is enough. To cut triangles or hexagons i draw a shape out of cardbord and use it together with my clear ruler. It works well and costs nothing.

For my eyes, I would have to insert Sashing horizontally I can’t do just vertical Sashing. My eyes were having trouble focusing on the blocks.

I likt the pattern at 8:03 best, because the middle and the stips build a unit. Better to sew stripes horizont and vertical to make it less bussy.

You could cut your centers the size and width of the three middle blocks and it would greatly help calm it down. I do have to disagree with you about crumb quilts being ugly. I love them.

I think that the term should be "chaotic "instead of ugly. Crumb quilts are very busy to some. I am trying to use solids among the prints to calm down and rest the eyes.

Yes! I made one and hated it - too big. But scaled down, as shown here, is much more pleasing to me. Could one not also do a log cabin sort of construction for a block from crumbs? The strips would have to be pieced, probably…

The point of crumb quilts is that there is no measuring. You just sew two pieces together. I'm working on a crumb quilt now but I am sewing them together by color so I will have blocks of a single colorway.

I don’t care for certain types of quilts but would never call any quilt ‘ugly’ if it’s not my taste. That’s mean, unnecessary, thoughtless and doesn’t value someone else’s work. Why is is necessary to say anything that negative? So disappointing. But I’m sure you’ll find plenty of people to ‘hate’ right along with you.
I think the quilt on the left is nice. Though I wouldn’t cut all those tiny blocks to make it. The quilt on the right, with the ‘columns’ is not my taste. I would’ve just sashed the blocks and made them squares. The rows don’t appeal to me (at all). Squares would be much more balanced. But that just MY opinion.
I do agree that we don’t need to buy ‘new’ rulers when we have ones that can do exactly the same thing. I’m sure I’ve been guilty of that. But people like to reinvent the wheel, to sell products. We just need to be aware.

Your video just showed up this morning in my suggested videos. I have to say I agree with you about the rulers (I have three), but totally disagree about crumb quilting. I love crazy quilting...the crazier the better LOL. I just did a grocery bag last night to get rid of some ugly fabric, figuring who cares if it's ugly - it's a grocery bag. I can handle ugly fabric in small pieces, used more as a background for pretty fabrics. But, as my sister used to say, that's why they make chocolate and vanilla LOL.

What a great idea. But until you pointed it out, I never stopped to think that - yes it's true - most crumb quilts are actually ugly - I was just in love with the idea of using up all my scraps. There is some balance and order to your quilt, and it's much more pleasing to the eye.

    • @theopinionatedquilter
      @theopinionatedquilter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is from Quilters Rule. It is 36" by 72". The problem is, the interview I saw with a woman from OLFA said that kind of mat dulls blades faster than the self healing mats. I am trying to find one big enough for the cutting table.

There is a lady on TH-cam named Brenda who calls these potato chip blocks (Conquering Mount Scrapmore). She uses 2 x 3.5 or 2.5 x 4.5 pieces because she wants 12.5" blocks for her guild's charity quilts. I like yours but do not have the patience for the tiny pieces. I agree that the sashing helps the quilt be more organized and less chaotic than the earlier one. Also using a consistent center helps.
    Tks for your videos. Informative.

Tells you you’re dumb and wasting money if you buy the same ruler that does the same thing as others… straight-faced pulls out a box of 50+ square rulers she owns that do the same thing AND admits she has also has 5 of the same type of triangle already…. 😂😂😂 Thank you, that made me laugh my @$$ off! (I too have 50+ rulers… “cos I’m addicted to them and I haven’t even quilted ‘til recently and only 1/4” and 1/2” pixel picture blocks because I’m a sucker for punishment, like a challenge and thought some quilts are old-fashioned, ugly BECAUSE they look “homemade”…. and not worth the money thrown into them😂😂😂 ***edit*** Subbed! ***Incidentally, I also found your video because I specifically searched for “ugly quilts”*** 😜

This presupposes the your leftovers are strips, rectangles or squares.
I have very small pieces of shapes and nothing as big as a quarter of 1/8th.
Many quilt demonstrators show beautiful quilts made with scraps. These scraps can be anything like 1/4 or even 1/2 a yard. To me and many others this would not be a scrap.
I recently go 3 and a half quilts from my scraps and took ages.
In saying all this your quilts are beautiful.
