I’ll never understand people that go out into the deep wilderness without a firearm for protection. Me and my friends don’t even go fishing or to a cabin without being armed to the teeth.

You get used to it. I own 54 acers in the mountains and bears are around. I carry a sig 9mm 7 rounds. I still don't build a cabin. So I sleep in a big tent. I have my cot away about 2ft from the walls. I have things around the tent so I can hear if anything is around the tent. I am more concerned at night. I have become a light sleeper. I the tent I have another 9mm 17 rds and a ar15 30rds just in case. When it rains at night I don't like it because I can't hear. During the day I take a light nap to be more alert at night.

I think people didn't understand the dangers back in 1976. I remember back then people always told me "oh, don't worry about bears. They're more afraid of you than you're afraid of them." Seriously, that was the culture back then. A lot of people laughed at me for being silly because I wasn't about to go anywhere near bear country without spray and a gun (though now I realize I was woefully under armed). I was lucky, never encountered a bear, but if I had, all the wrong information would have likely gotten me killed (climb a tree, play dead, run, etc). It's only in the past couple of decades that better knowledge and information is readily available. In 1976, though, most people really believed that bears were more afraid of us than we were of them.

@@coffeepot3123 The fact that you actually believe bears are more of a threat to your safety than the things you live with daily is pretty amazing. Illustrates just how out of touch people have become. You basically remark how much of a threat they are, and then admit you have no real world knowledge of them. That is the definition of ignorance.

It wasn't mentioned in this video, but one of the items they found among Alan Precup's remains was a camera. When the film was later developed it contained two photographs of a small, undernourished looking bear. It was believed at the time (and still is I presume) that was the bear that ultimately killed him, and that the last thing Precup did before he was killed by this bear was take its picture. Precup was also a recent graduate of MIT. Just goes to show that even really smart people can make dumb mistakes, especially in the woods.

When it jumped off the fence I shot at it 2 times , then it speeded up towards the calf so I poured the lead at it. After hitting it 2 times it turned on me so I started working its chest over then about 20 yards from me it turned so I pour more lead into the chest. If one were told that in a certain area in the wild there was a crazed killer who is a cannibal? Would you go and camp, sleeping unprotected alone in the middle of the night where it is known that the killer is lurking about? Probably no!..Well, consider that some bears can be that killer, who will tear you apart and eat you. But somehow naive animal lovers gloss over these traits in bears, lions sharks, and other predators. When you go into the wild, go with at least two others, and go with the knowledge of the area and its wildlife and armed with bear alarms, bear spray, and finally rifles. Don't be naive, the reason it is called "The Wild" is that it is.

It was the summer of 1973 and we were all going camping in the true wilderness, and reading a bear attack book before going into the woods so deep and dark was the dumbest thing I have done!! I didn't sleep a wink in the whole 5 days!!! Even a chipmunk sounded like a giant grizzly ready to tear my flesh from my bones as I watched him devour me bit by bit!! It is amazing how pin point your hearing becomes when you are scared out of your mind!! I could hear a field mouse fart from a half a mile away!! I have had many camping trips since that trip, and I have run into many bears and other wild critters who could have eaten me, but still I can't get enough of the bear stories. No ghost was ever more terrifying that a pissed off black bear with 3 cubs!! No demon could instill the kind of horror a hungry grizzly bear can offer you as you run for your life! Had a very close encounter with a big Cinnamon Black Bear while bowhunting Elk in NM. I had backed into a blowdown and was well camoed close to the elk wallow. Ten minutes went by before a large bear appeared. I had evidently walked into his living room. With just a bow and arrow for defense I just froze as he was ten yards from me, sat down and roared. I stayed frozen until the bear walked down the trail I had come in on. He then came back to repeat his roar. He then walked back down the trail and didn't return. I had to walk out that same trail that night shining my light and singing. My conclusion is this. This was my second bear encounter but by far the closest. A bear has an amazing sense of smell but doesn't see any better than a human. If the bear has not seen you then hide yourself and do not move. You can't outrun or out climb a bear. I later learned the gulch i had hiked up was named "Bear Gulch" on the topo map. Go figure.

Do they even have black bears, let alone Brown bears/Grizzlies there? He was a complete Cheechako who had no inkling of what, where or how he was doing in that wilderness. Another BIG mistake was being alone. People are not allowed to bear firearms in Glacier National Monument and so one MUST be hyper-careful and cautious as to where one camps and how one manages the food. Having another pair of eyes and ears, as well as someone to help defend you (even with rocks and branches) means a higher chance to survive something like this. Too sad and horrible. People who don't live in the back-country just have no clue.

Foolish to go without a firearm or at least bear spray! But they did handle it well. I'd bet the biggest thing that saved them at least a fight, was the fact he had recently eaten a huge meal sadly. That guy alone. Smh. At least the others were in a group. Also I think he was a bit tired and decided to just hangout near them. Corralled his snacks for later... 🤪I hate when animals are mistreated but this bear really needed to be put down. Wonder what else he got up to? Of course you said that was a very remote area. At the very least bear spray. However someone in the group should be carrying a weapon that will stop an attack that ends in a member of their group becoming a meal in a bear attack.. No one connecting with nature wants to kill any animal. However common sense goes a long way in preventing bear attacks and deaths.

Most you'll do is injure it and make it "frenzied". The statistics are 50% of people dying with a firearm, 6% with bear spray. That means half the people thinking a gun will protect them will end up bear food.

And I hope this bear stays away from other campers \ hikers but we all kno that this bear will more than lilely do this again cos once they have a taste for human flash tjis type of preditor will do it again . And will end up being dispatched .

Being stalked by a bear has got to be horrifying . 2 weeks ago my dog and I , were being stalked by a coyote . It's breeding season and I think a mama coy was being territorial . You would have thought I owed that bitch money . The way she was pacing , weaving , and keeping her eye on us . My Amstaff is 90lbs and not animal friendly . I had bear spray and my walking stick . My heart was racing , though . Anyway , she backed off once we got to the road . I probably would have been screaming and crying , if it was a bear . 😬😮😂

Of all the people who have been killed by a dangerous predator while hiking or camping, how many would still be alive today if they or someone they were with, would have had a gun? Sadly, many people have negative views on guns and don't believe in bringing one in the woods. It is NOT about violence or killing animals, it is about YOUR SAFETY and safety of those with you. Bottom line, a gun will SAVE YOUR LIFE. Period!

You have more chance of dying in a car accident compared to being killed by a bear in bear country. Do you wear a helmet and a racing suit in your car?

to camp in bear country without major lethal weapons is just plain stupid. I would go in with several people and be heavily armed.

When will people learn wild animals are not the cute and cuddly things you think they are. Leave them alone and know that if you go into THIER HOMES, you are free game. They only do what they are made to do. They are not our friends and are " pretty boys or pretty girls" Like you think if you shout that, they will be happy. They are also NOT PETS!!

Very scary situation, sounds like they did all the right things and all lived to tell the tale except of course Alan RIP God bless your family left to grieve🙏 ! I wouldn’t hurt ANY animal UNLESS personal protection and family and any other human I could help! Definitely keep and have this very important protection for situations like this , they were very lucky !

I live in an area where bears or other wild animals are not the norms. However about 10yrs ago a black bear somehow was spotted by some young teens. The police took it seriously and investigated. The bear somehow wandered in a busy thoroughfare and climbed up a telephone pole. They got Wildlife Service to get it down by firing darts to put it to sleep. They prepared the ground for its fall and transported the bear to I believe the zoo.

I was a land surveyor for the entire 80's in Alberta, Canada near The Rocky Mountains. I spent lots of time alone in the deep bush with nothing but a hatchet for protection. I encountered everything from Moose to Black Bears and Grizzlies. I'm still here today because I'm bush smart and know what to do when encountering wild animals. As far as camping in bear country goes, your taking a risk that may cost you your life! You can have 20 guns in your tent but if your sleeping when the bear attacks or taking a piss, its all over but the dying! You might have a chance if your sleeping with a pistol ready to fire in your hand with no safety on but your probably gonna just shoot yourself or buddy when you have a bad dream....lol An 800+ lb Grizzly can rip through any tent in less than 5 seconds! Good luck with that! That's why I don't sleep in a tent in bear country and never will.

I'm a big fan of the series Alone. I've always thought that the one thing I would do is make a platform to elevate myself as much as possible to feel safer from predators even if it wouldn't be an actuality.

I knew 3 girls that went on a 'girls camping trip' near Banff, Alberta. The fish & fur cops went through the campground they were in warning everyone about a grizzly being sighted in the area. They already had their food hoisted into a tree and decided to sleep in their car rather than in their tent.
A couple of hours later the grizzly attacked their car with a vengeance and caused a lot of damage before they could start the car and drive away. They were then discussing what could have had the bear zeroing in on them in particular. As it turns out one of the girls was having her period.
I have a small 5th wheel trailer with a 'bear hatch' (20" X 20" vent) above the bed at the front of the trailer. A big selling point to me.
A bear with a head cold can out sniff a blood hound on its best day.

Good advice but what about all the time you aren't sleeping or peeing? So it seems to me that a majority of the time a very large gun would be handy.
