Also, Raggedy Ann and Andy are brother and sister. They are very close, each other's best friend.
I just imagine being a child back in 1941 desperately trying to find a few minutes to escape the reality of World War 2 and treasuring cartoons like these as a way to cope with the death and destruction happening around you. God bless the animators who went through with these kind of productions. Not all heroes were just on the battlefields.
Besides the fact that the creator accidentally made them a couple, this film was so wholesome and just down right beautiful. Their voices, the reason they’re stitched together, the animation. All of it is so cute. I wish there were cartoons still like this (Edit: Especially 7:26 it’s adorable)

I loved my Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls I had when I was a little girl in the early 1960's. They and a teddy bear kept me feeling cozy while I slept. I saw the cartoon on a kids' afternoon show on our black and white TV. It's great to see it again in beautiful color. I'm so glad this cartoon was restored for future generations to enjoy.
I had same desire, lol, I'm in my 50's. I grew up reading the books and had Raggedy Ann doll when very young, 3 I think. Year or so ago I was finally able to buy online and now have two pairs. Each are special or maybe anniversary. Both pairs unique, different from the norm. One pair is smaller than normal and were made and faces painted, to look like the art of the dolls from the earlier books Raggedy Ann Stories and Raggedy Andy Stories. The other set looks a lot more like later art in the books, again made to look exact, down to the clothes for both as much as possible. I also got Beloved Belindy from the books that was made by a doll maker. Looks exactly the same as in books, also I have the Snitchnoodle from the popular Raggedy Ann in Cooky Land book. I love these dolls very much and have satisfied my desire to have dolls that looked just like the ones from the books. So I say go for it. I found mine on eBay and find so much happiness in having them. So if it would make you happy then there is nothing wrong with having them. You are never too old for Raggedy Ann and Andy.

@@MASTEROFEVIL Yes! Raggedy Ann is still a decently well-known brand that is still manufactured and can also be purchased second-hand for a reasonable price and still inspires art to this day, the most notable and recent example being Ragatha from 2023 the Amazing Digital Circus.
The shame of it is that it was not expanded into a feature. There is a lot of room for expansion on the story. And the story seems to rush to the conclusion.
In the books they are siblings and I cannot see them as anything other than that, but I do think that Ann and Babette could be a pretty cute couple since I watched the old movie.
I thought they were a couple since they were super touchy-feely through the movie and acted nothing like siblings, then Ann was like 'oh im Raggedy Ann and this is my _brother_ Raggedy Andy' and things felt p weird after that

If you are into the older cartoons like this and if you like Christmas cartoons, there's a DVD called Christmas Cartoon Classics. Those are the cartoons from the 30's, 40's and 50's. It's definitely nostalgic!
I find it interesting how when they are created the painter chose for Ann’s heart to say “I Love You” and for Andy’s heart to say “Happy Go Lucky” not “I Love You” as well. That and the implication that Ann can’t continue without Andy after he broke her “ I Love You” heart even when her life is at stake and Andy only realizes and comes to her aid after he is rejected by another. Somehow all of this is proof they belong together?
That’s the 40s for you, teaching kids that dolls meant for girls were all about love for others ( being a house wife was peak back then ) and dolls that represent boys are all about free to have fun , the whole boys will be boys. You can even notice odd details like how the little girl at the beginning was keeping her money in a tiny woman’s red purse and her undergarments (like a grandma haha) 😅 then crosses her leg , like a grown up, to hear the story .
People talk about Ann and Andy being couples but I think people needs to talk about the scene where Ann and Andy was riding the camel. If you look above, you can see that they left out a measuring tape that they use for keyframes. I think that parts interesting (though it took me out of the movie)
That's the peg bar that keeps the animation art aligned; the rules on it are used to help know where to place characters, objects, and later how to frame the camera. The restoration team missed it when re-scanning the film. In theaters, it likely would not have shown up due to how projectors of the time were set up.

This is great! I'm a big fan of Musical Adventure but this is very fun. It feels like Pinocchio in a lot of ways. The coziness and musical style and beautiful animated acting.
Pinto Colvig had bolted from Disney to work at Fleischer Studios in Miami for a few years. In the Goofy cartoons made during this time (about 1940 through 1942), Goofy is generally mute - this is the start of (and the reasoning for) the Goofy "How To" series with the snarky narrator.

Remember watching this with my dad growing up. I remember loving the part where they slip the heart into Raggedy Ann's mouth lol It looks like at 15:28 that there's a scene or two missing, where Raggedy Andy gets their names and is reunited with the camel. I looked at other versions of the cartoon though, and it doesn't exist there either. Also unfortunately there's a racist "mammy" character at 15:30 that I never noticed before I always cried at the scene where they have their hands sewn together. Just so sweet!
@kayc_x3 According to other comments about this video, the "mammy" character is Beloved Belindy, a character from the Raggedy Ann books. My sister's Raggedy Ann Magic Pebble card game from the 1970's (which is kind of like Old Maid) had a pair of Beloved Belindy cards.
I don't think it was meant to be racist. The doll in window is most definitely the doll in the books called Beloved Belindy and she was one of the most respected of the dolls next to Raggedy Ann and Andy. She was like the mother to everyone and made sure things ran smoothly. Her character was never belittled in anyway. She was treated with great respect. I actually have a Beloved Belindy doll created by a doll maker and she is one of my prized possessions.
It would be strange if it was a mammy because the fleischers were known for being very progressive for the time, painting black characters and musicians in a bright light such as Cab Calloway, either when their cartoons would be banned in some states
I love this heartwarming animated short film and the raggedy twins are so cute… but I don’t like the idea of them as a couple.. they’re siblings and I’ve found out the guy who made this film has never red a book of them before and he assumed they’re a couple Just like someone from decades later who made a live action movie adaptation of a certain golden cartoon that the director has never seen before
Now, I wonder if the little girl is suppose to be Marcella from the books who had Raggedy Ann and Andy. Though, in the books, Marcella finds Raggedy Ann in her grandmother’s attic and after her grandmother sews her up a bit, she gives Raggedy Ann to Marcella.

It's pretty standard for a cartoon of this time. 1941 was the year Tom & Jerry were given their own series, the year the Fleischers (who made this cartoon) made their first Superman cartoons, Bugs Bunny got his name, "Dumbo" was made at Disney. (there was also a massive animator's strike at Disney this year that would result in lots of Disney people going to other studios and the styles of American animation evolving in a short amount of time)
Why cant you believe this cartoon was made in 1941? Well, it wasn't. It wasn't "made" in 1941. The model sheets and production notes have a 1940 date on them. It was made in 1940, but Paramount did not release it until Easter 1941. I've always felt they missed the opportunity to develop this into a Christmas feature for 1940. They had the time, but for some reason this wasn't realized. It it had been a feature, the presence of The Paramount Studio Orchestra would have been something great as can be heard in the two Fleischer features.
That was heartbreaking and cute and I like the way it ends with the little girl holding both Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy by bringing them home with her. I will get that for Christmas this year! 🎄🪆
The animation is wonderful even though this Raggedy Ann and Andy are different from the books and media. The song at the end, i will admit the singing is great

@kayc_x3 According to other comments about this video, the "mammy" character is Beloved Belindy, a character from the Raggedy Ann books. My sister's Raggedy Ann Magic Pebble card game from the 1970's (which is kind of like Old Maid) had a pair of Beloved Belindy cards.
I don't think it was meant to be racist. The doll in window is most definitely the doll in the books called Beloved Belindy and she was one of the most respected of the dolls next to Raggedy Ann and Andy. She was like the mother to everyone and made sure things ran smoothly. Her character was never belittled in anyway. She was treated with great respect.
I actually have a Beloved Belindy doll created by a doll maker and she is one of my prized possessions.
It would be strange if it was a mammy because the fleischers were known for being very progressive for the time, painting black characters and musicians in a bright light such as Cab Calloway, either when their cartoons would be banned in some states

I love this heartwarming animated short film and the raggedy twins are so cute… but I don’t like the idea of them as a couple.. they’re siblings and I’ve found out the guy who made this film has never red a book of them before and he assumed they’re a couple

Now, I wonder if the little girl is suppose to be Marcella from the books who had Raggedy Ann and Andy. Though, in the books, Marcella finds Raggedy Ann in her grandmother’s attic and after her grandmother sews her up a bit, she gives Raggedy Ann to Marcella.

It's pretty standard for a cartoon of this time. 1941 was the year Tom & Jerry were given their own series, the year the Fleischers (who made this cartoon) made their first Superman cartoons, Bugs Bunny got his name, "Dumbo" was made at Disney.
(there was also a massive animator's strike at Disney this year that would result in lots of Disney people going to other studios and the styles of American animation evolving in a short amount of time)
Why cant you believe this cartoon was made in 1941? Well, it wasn't. It wasn't "made" in 1941. The model sheets and production notes have a 1940 date on them. It was made in 1940, but Paramount did not release it until Easter 1941. I've always felt they missed the opportunity to develop this into a Christmas feature for 1940. They had the time, but for some reason this wasn't realized. It it had been a feature, the presence of The Paramount Studio Orchestra would have been something great as can be heard in the two Fleischer features.
The UCLA watermark's a shame, but it's still exciting to see after decades of faded, washed-out TV prints.

The animation is wonderful even though this Raggedy Ann and Andy are different from the books and media. The song at the end, i will admit the singing is great
The lack of communication that caused them to make Raggedy Ann and Andy lovers instead of siblings always irks me but the animation is so visually pleasing 😭

The rights to make the dolls themselves are owned by Hasbro, which has had several of its properties adapted to film by Paramount, such as Transformers and G.I. Joe.

I had a collection of Raggedy Ann books as a little boy but I don't recall reading them much. Disney films, Sesame Street, Electric Company were all more my tastes as a small boy.
