- Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy (1941)
Director: Dave Fleischer.
In the wake of the successful animated feature releases by Walt Disney (Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs) and Max Fleischer (Gulliver’s Travels) in 1937 and 1939, respectively, Paramount immediately authorized the production a pair of extra-length two-reel cartoon subjects from Fleischer Studios. The first one, released in April 1941, was produced at Fleischer’s lavish new animation studio in Miami, Florida, where the production of Gulliver’s Travels took place, alongside the popular Popeye shorts and pre-production on their second feature, Mr. Bug Goes To Town (1941). Based on the classic books by Johnny Gruelle, Fleischer fashioned Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy as a musical taking place in the imagination of a little girl. The studio changed the relationship of Ann and Andy from brother and sister to boyfriend and girlfriend to give the story more drama. The book’s popular Camel with the Wrinkled Knees makes an appearance, voiced by Pinto Colvig (better known as Disney’s Goofy). Al J. Neiburg, Dave Fleischer and Sammy Timberg wrote four catchy original songs. It’s a delightful film - and the Paramount animation department (known after 1942 as Famous Studios) made two sequels in 1944 and 1947.

Note: This short was restored photochemically and meant to be shown with a 1.37:1 Academy aspect ratio, matted in projection and with additional masking in the theater. This digitization of the restoration is shown in true 1.37:1 which means more information is visible at the top of the screen than would traditionally be seen in the theater. Although not accurate to how it would be projected, this does give us a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the animation process, primarily in the panning sequence beginning at 9:10. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
In the books Raggedy Ann was given a candy heart that said I love you and that is the explanation for her kind hearted nature. Raggedy Andy never got a candy heart. But in the books during later adventures he got a wishing stick sewed up inside him and Ann got a wishing pebble sewed up inside her so they both could make wishes. Also, Raggedy Ann and Andy are brother and sister. They are very close, each other's best friend.
this is what i got from this XD everyone thought they were lovers, but they are friends/siblings
@@louderthenvisual
I cannot see Ann and Andy as anything other than best siblings, but I do think that Ann with Babette makes a pretty cute ship.
🥺
I would make a joke about that stick up inside Andy....but that is beneath me~😏
@@ws6778 What is it with this kink of some people? Just leave good what is good.
I just imagine being a child back in 1941 desperately trying to find a few minutes to escape the reality of World War 2 and treasuring cartoons like these as a way to cope with the death and destruction happening around you. God bless the animators who went through with these kind of productions. Not all heroes were just on the battlefields.
There wasn't much war going on in America at that time
@@gyrosik8851true that was in Europe
You're very sweet and thoughtful.
@@gyrosik8851 no, but fathers and brothers were coming home...in body bags. That affects a child.
That kinda rude but I understand
Raggedy Andy: So're we siblings or boyfriend and girlfriend?
Raggedy Ann: I don't know!
In the books they are siblings and I cannot see them as anything other than that, but I do think that Ann and Babette could be a pretty cute couple since I watched the old movie.
Just like Gerda and Kay from the Snow Queen~! lol
I thought they were a couple since they were super touchy-feely through the movie and acted nothing like siblings, then Ann was like 'oh im Raggedy Ann and this is my _brother_ Raggedy Andy' and things felt p weird after that
@@shipper-of-heart8898 Yeah it's something the writer's keep flip flopping on!
@@JaguarCats I think in this short at least, theyre friends/romantic interest since Ann says her 'friend' instead of 'brother'. And the random smooch on the cheek def isnt a sibling thing to do (i mean they do in the movie which again, is pretty weird), then she gets jealous/ sad when the other doll gets his attention
fun fact; the reason that raggedy ann and andy are a couple in this movie, but siblings in other movies, is because the creators of the movie didnt actually read the books - but since raggedy ann and andy were basically a free concept, they didnt bother to read the books, and assumed they were a couple because boy + girl. so yeah this is basically doll incest lmao
dont get me wrong the movie is cute though!!!
The son of the books’ author helped w/ this short though it’s unknown how involved he was. I guessed that they just wanted to do their own thing bc that’d be a pretty big factor to miss. But I’ve never seen a real explanation so who knows
.. this fact creates and incredibly disturbing storyline. Trippiest cartoon ever.
It ain’t doll incest if it’s a different canon entirely. For all we know they’re not related in this version but in other versions they are.
@@anonymousgoblin792 the second part of this is exactly what i was saying
77 Ann: So. How are things with your Andrew?
41: Ann: Oh. You know. We went to the lake, strolled on a a rowboat and. **giggles** I couldn´t handle myself... I kissed him in the cheek. Aaah... It was so romantic...
77 Ann and Andy: ... Eeeeeew!!!
And so both reacts to grossout in different ways. Ann covers her mouth as Andy cleans his tongue.
41 Andy: Oh, why do you act like that? Aren´t you in love in your world?
77 Andy: We´re siblings pal! Just because you aren´t doesn´t mean I shoulda kiss a girl! Much less my own sister like if I were some hillibilly... puaj!
Besides the fact that the creator accidentally made them a couple, this film was so wholesome and just down right beautiful. Their voices, the reason they’re stitched together, the animation. All of it is so cute. I wish there were cartoons still like this
(Edit: Especially 7:26 it’s adorable)

@@duranls1 I agree!
I had Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy when I was a little girl, and loved them dearly. Now, I have the urge to buy another pair and I'm 66! Lol!
I had same desire, lol, I'm in my 50's. I grew up reading the books and had Raggedy Ann doll when very young, 3 I think. Year or so ago I was finally able to buy online and now have two pairs. Each are special or maybe anniversary. Both pairs unique, different from the norm.
One pair is smaller than normal and were made and faces painted, to look like the art of the dolls from the earlier books Raggedy Ann Stories and Raggedy Andy Stories. The other set looks a lot more like later art in the books, again made to look exact, down to the clothes for both as much as possible. I also got Beloved Belindy from the books that was made by a doll maker. Looks exactly the same as in books, also I have the Snitchnoodle from the popular Raggedy Ann in Cooky Land book. I love these dolls very much and have satisfied my desire to have dolls that looked just like the ones from the books.
So I say go for it. I found mine on eBay and find so much happiness in having them. So if it would make you happy then there is nothing wrong with having them. You are never too old for Raggedy Ann and Andy.
Do it!
Do they even make those anymore?
Hello, here's a quick word from a 16-year-old who has an obsession with fashion, history, toys, and of course doll history. Go buy it! Life is for enjoyment
@@MASTEROFEVIL Yes! Raggedy Ann is still a decently well-known brand that is still manufactured and can also be purchased second-hand for a reasonable price and still inspires art to this day, the most notable and recent example being Ragatha from 2023 the Amazing Digital Circus.

So far, not claimed by TH-cam Kids, that's good, that's good.
I loved my Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls I had when I was a little girl in the early 1960's. They and a teddy bear kept me feeling cozy while I slept. I saw the cartoon on a kids' afternoon show on our black and white TV. It's great to see it again in beautiful color. I'm so glad this cartoon was restored for future generations to enjoy.
I had them when I was a child too.
How nice 🥹
crying for two little ragdolls wasnt in my bingo
Such a beautiful cartoon. I LOVE Raggedy Ann and Andy. I have a pair on my bed to this day. So fun.
So beautiful love 🌹💗❤️
I am going to get them too.
I find it interesting how when they are created the painter chose for Ann’s heart to say “I Love You” and for Andy’s heart to say “Happy Go Lucky” not “I Love You” as well. That and the implication that Ann can’t continue without Andy after he broke her “ I Love You” heart even when her life is at stake and Andy only realizes and comes to her aid after he is rejected by another. Somehow all of this is proof they belong together?
That’s the 40s for you, teaching kids that dolls meant for girls were all about love for others ( being a house wife was peak back then ) and dolls that represent boys are all about free to have fun , the whole boys will be boys.
You can even notice odd details like how the little girl at the beginning was keeping her money in a tiny woman’s red purse and her undergarments (like a grandma haha) 😅 then crosses her leg , like a grown up, to hear the story .
i hate that just cause he couldnt get with Archita Anita Panchita Bebita Rosita, he settled for raggedy ann😤😤
Lolol the social commentary is definitely worth discussing. Like, he just goes and gets her name and it’s “Raggedy Ann”? and he says he’s just Andy.
@@Cavairfkafrd hes so fake for that like boy you raggedy too🙄🙄
I thought they were siblings?
Such a heartwarming story! They don't make cartoons like this anymore...
It’s fantastic to remember the good old animations. Been a nostalgia fan of old things even my decade: the 1980s. Raggedy Ann and Andy are favorites.
@@adampellett4917 yes, I'm nostalgic like that, too. I was born in the late 60's, so I grew up watching the original Bugs Bunny and Scooby Doo cartoons. If you are into the older cartoons like this and if you like Christmas cartoons, there's a DVD called Christmas Cartoon Classics. Those are the cartoons from the 30's, 40's and 50's. It's definitely nostalgic!
Bye bye, no crack.

People talk about Ann and Andy being couples but I think people needs to talk about the scene where Ann and Andy was riding the camel. If you look above, you can see that they left out a measuring tape that they use for keyframes. I think that parts interesting (though it took me out of the movie)
I saw that! Old animation is so fascinating and cool!
Aw, this is very moving and wonderful, the only thing I didn't like was that they got married, apparently they didn't read the books very well because they are both siblings, but that doesn't take away from how beautiful it is ❤
Never seen this before omg the ending made me cry when he gave them to the little girl. 😭❤️
Same 😭
I love a happy ending.
I love this little movie, but I cannot get over the fact that Raggedy Ann and Andy are supposed to be siblings, not a married couple?? 😭 It's a beautiful film otherwise!
My guess is that they didn’t read the books
@@Mooms I think they meant the siblings to be a married couple and sweethearts instead of siblings that’s what I’ve heard on Google. I think they did read the books they just wanted to make them sweethearts instead of siblings. Besides, this is a Walt Disney film so I’m assuming they were meant to be sweethearts considering Walt Disney making them sweethearts
I prefer the siblings storyline. But still a very cute story none the less!

LET'S GO!!! I've always wanted to see a restored version of this.
Remember watching this with my dad growing up. I remember loving the part where they slip the heart into Raggedy Ann's mouth lol
It looks like at 15:28 that there's a scene or two missing, where Raggedy Andy gets their names and is reunited with the camel. I looked at other versions of the cartoon though, and it doesn't exist there either.
Also unfortunately there's a racist "mammy" character at 15:30 that I never noticed before
I always cried at the scene where they have their hands sewn together. Just so sweet!
@kayc_x3 According to other comments about this video, the "mammy" character is Beloved Belindy, a character from the Raggedy Ann books. My sister's Raggedy Ann Magic Pebble card game from the 1970's (which is kind of like Old Maid) had a pair of Beloved Belindy cards.
I don't think it was meant to be racist. The doll in window is most definitely the doll in the books called Beloved Belindy and she was one of the most respected of the dolls next to Raggedy Ann and Andy. She was like the mother to everyone and made sure things ran smoothly. Her character was never belittled in anyway. She was treated with great respect.
I actually have a Beloved Belindy doll created by a doll maker and she is one of my prized possessions.
It would be strange if it was a mammy because the fleischers were known for being very progressive for the time, painting black characters and musicians in a bright light such as Cab Calloway, either when their cartoons would be banned in some states
9:15 I love that you can see the equipment used in this shot.
I'm not cryin'...

@@loganmalough2379 thanks for telling me that
@solangegriffin5894 The character Go Go Gomez in the Dick Tracy cartoons from the early 1960's (who's kind of like a human version of Speedy Gonzales) also has a long Spanish name.

Thank you for sharing this masterpiece. I was born in 1988 but my dad suggested that I should learn from USA classical cartoon movies such as music, drawing, creativity, behavior… when I was under 10 years old
I can't believe this cartoon was made in 1941! 😯❤️
its sad that cartoons like this dosent exist anymore.this was made from people who loved their work.
Now, I wonder if the little girl is suppose to be Marcella from the books who had Raggedy Ann and Andy. Though, in the books, Marcella finds Raggedy Ann in her grandmother’s attic and after her grandmother sews her up a bit, she gives Raggedy Ann to Marcella.
Nice to see someone who remembers the story correctly.
And no. Considering how the person who wrote this particular cartoon never read the books, I think that little girl is just a random character. Just like the blind girl in another old Raggedy Ann cartoon.
Are the original books avaible to read online? I checked them up and they're like 700$ for each lol. Well my country's economy sucks so yea
It's a beautiful story. Twin siblings born together from the same machine overcome obstacles and get married.
Now they'll always be together.

I love this heartwarming animated short film and the raggedy twins are so cute… but I don’t like the idea of them as a couple.. they’re siblings and I’ve found out the guy who made this film has never red a book of them before and he assumed they’re a couple
Just like someone from decades later who made a live action movie adaptation of a certain golden cartoon that the director has never seen before

The book rights to Raggedy Ann and Andy are currently owned by Simon and Schuster, a long time sister company to Paramount from 1975-2005 and again from 2019-23, when Paramount Global sold S&S to KKR.
The rights to make the dolls themselves are owned by Hasbro, which has had several of its properties adapted to film by Paramount, such as Transformers and G.I. Joe.
WOW, that camel is awesome.
This is just so cute- and the Camel with the wrinkled knees sounds like goofy-
That’s what I was thinking!.. Is he actually voiced by the actor who originally plays goofy?
Yes he was!

Nope, there is a book "Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees"
A 100 YEARS OLD BOOK!!!(to be written in an overly dramatic voice)
Question….. are the dolls suppose to be romantic lovers? Or are they just siblings. If Andy was worried about Ann because she is his sister, then that is fine. However sewing their hands together seems like it symbolizes something deeper. I am just wondering.
They’re siblings but the creators of this didn’t read the books so they thought they were dating (this is what I heard)
Fleischer changed it. They're sweethearts here, not siblings.
