    Hi, First, allow me to compliment you on a good and easy to understand video.
    I hate to nitpick, but I just want to give you a heads up on ~4:18. the molecule is not glycine, but alanine, with a methyl R group. glycine has two H attached to the alpha carbon. However, for beginners to the topic, this small detail is hardly important.
    All in all, great video.

    I have a doubt.
    I understand what a functional group is. But can we say that functional group have so many categories like alcohol, Ester, etc. Does hydrocarbon also come under the category of functional group? As you said in your video that alkanes alkenes are a functional group since Alkanes and alkenes are hydrocarbons then it means that hydrocarbons are also a type of functional group am I right

  • @jayronsanque364

    are hydrocarbons considered as functional groups? like for example, you have alcohol attached to a cyclohexane. Is cyclohexane a functional group or only the alcohol is the functional group?

    • @fuseschool
      @fuseschool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Functional groups are attached to the relatively inert carbon-hydrogen framework. They are places where reactions can occur relatively easily. C=C double and triple bonds count as functional groups -ene and -yne, otherwise it needs a different atom like O, Cl, P, F, etc. to become 'functional' or 'reactive'.

    Gd morning siir.
    How functional group assign similar properties to a compound ??how chemical properties depends upon functional group?

    • @DerDrako
      @DerDrako 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For example, a ketongroup makes that its carbon atom is slightly positive charged, while its oxygenatom is slightly negative charged. Thats because of the differences in electronegativity between the oxygen and the carbon atom. Now that the atom has a light positive and a light negativ side, it works like a magnet and better sticks to other molecules who also work like magnets. They attract each other and hold together. This makes them become fluid at lower temperatures than molecules with similiar masses. It is just an example, but it is one way it is working. :D
      Another one is, that all organic compounds with an carboxylic acid group can react as acids, because thats the name of the group. It is because they can give up a proton to become a base/anion. These anions are stabilized through resonance structures. But this one is a topic for its own.

    So for the Alcohol (OH), it's a Functional Group because whatever it attaches to (/attaches to it) will have similar reactions & properties bc they change into an Alcohol??
    ie. Methane is -C- then an OH attaches to it making it MethanOL
    then there's Butane = C-C-C-C then an OH attaches to it making it ButaNOL bc OH makes the compound have the same reaction as it did with Methane to make it an Alcohol instead of an Alkane??
    Is that what the definition means by similar reaction & properties??
    I sort of get what Functional Groups are, but I don't understand that part.
    I also don't really get how an Alkanes / Alkenes are also Functional Groups when they're the parent chain? That could also be due to my true lack of understanding for what Functional Groups are?
