This is best explanation I could find on TH-cam. Literally our school teachers just couldn't explain this in simple language. And moreover they didn't even bother tell us about the rules, priorities, etc. I think you deserve more sir. Love you from India.

They basically decided that we understood their lecture so they gave out a few half assed example out of the book to make us believe we got it. But we never did.

the answer is 3,4-dibromopentanal. I thought it is 2,3-dibromopentanal but because of the priority list, and the aldehyde being the 2nd priority after acids, position number 1 is on the right, which is the aldehyde.

Not pentanone as Ketone cannot be placed at the end of carbon chains. Only Aldehyde i.e. -CHO can be at the end. Also, don't forget the priority list that we have to start the naming from the functional group! hope it helped :D

It wont be 2,3- dibromo pentanal because we have to consider the priority list. The aldehyde group (H-C=O) comes before the halogen functional group.

the reason is that u need to check the priortiy list so numbering should start from aldehyde group. Priority list plays an important role

For those Who don’t understand how the answer is 3,4- dibromo pentanal instead of 2,3- dibromo pentanal . So please check the priority list at 24:39 on 3 no , you will see the priority of ketone is more then the priority of halogens ( chloro , bromo , Floro, Iodo ) which is at 7 no . So it is necessary to start counting from ( Right to Left ) and from down side so u will observe that the answer is Come at no 3 and 4 . 🫶🏻🙌
