2024 F1 British GP Qualifying analysis by Peter Windsor

- In mixed and gusty weather conditions Mercedes scored a brilliant one-two result in qualifying for the British GP, with George Russell edging out Sir Lewis Hamilton by 0.171sec. McLaren-Mercedes start P3 on Sunday, with Lando Norris making it three British drivers in the first three positions, but Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen will line up only P4 after an excursion in Q1, when he was caught out by rain at the exit of Turn Seven. Oscar Piastri was P5 for McLaren-Mercedes, ahead of the Haas-Ferrari of Nico Hulkenberg. Haas embarrassed the factory Ferraris with their pace, for Carlos Sainz was P7 and Charles Leclerc failed to make it into Q3. In this video Peter Windsor analyses the key results of qualifying and, specifically, the way Russell and Hamilton created subtly different laps of Silverstone.

I don’t think Oscar can hang around for the win, tyre management is his one weakness and Silverstone is one of the hardest on tyres. But the top 4 is absolutely TANTALISING!!! Max, by his own admission, being on the hunt and an aggressive driving session instead of defensive for a change, Lando trying to keep Max behind and get to first and the two Mercs on a mission to secure the win in the home GP
@@aryotaheri7421 Oscar is in a lovely spot! I'm betting the house that at least two of the top four get the horns out and don't finish. if not all of them.

00:22 "He had Lewis Hamilton to beat in front of the Silverstone crowd, and he did so; by the tiniest of margins", a 0.171 gap isn't exactly the tiniest of margins, but I expected it from Peter, he always tries to paint Lewis in a good light...
What are you on about.
A 0.171 gap meant GR's front wing and front wheels crossed the line as SLH 's front wing was at the white line
Talk about whst you know please.
@@F1SCR007 1.7 tenths is a healthy margin in F1. You know it, I know it. Especially when you take into consideration that they're driving the same car. You could say "the tiniest of margins" when it's a couple of hundredths. Almost 2 tenths isn't tiny. We've had a lot of qualifying sessions this year where the field spread between P1 and P8 was less than 4 tenths, so how is a gap of almost 2 tenths between P1 and P2 "the tiniest of margins"? You gotta give credit where credit's due. Lando getting pole in Spain by 0.020 is the tiniest of margins. When you say that 0.171 is also the tiniest of margins, you're essentially putting Lando's pole lap in Spain and George's pole lap in Silverstone in the same category, which means that you're either undermining and underscoring Lando's performance in Spain or George's performance in Silverstone...

You clearly haven't either learnt your lesson or you just started following F1.
2012 was exactly like this yet Lewis put his doubters to shame. It is true that Mercedes are not McLaren however Lewis must have seen something that made him jump, knowing he has a better chance winning his 8th at Ferrari than Mercedes.
It is always easy to say these things in the moment however it is the end that justifies the means. F1 has always been a marathon not a sprint.
@@jkbzzyou seem to be talking about Lewis rather than the two teams. There is no MAJOR power unit regulation change like there was in 2014 that propelled Mercedes to first overall BY FAR…

@@jkbzzno chance Ferrari are in a better shape to win in 2025 than Mercedes even from 2026. Mercedes had correlation issues and also didn’t have a good concept earlier in the regulation. every race has a crosswind, then a tail wind, then a crosswind from the other side then a head wind, because you have to come back to where you started.
im obviously missing the significance
not if theres no wind maybe.. just a thought lol
And the no wind could be that it's blocked by the grandstands or funnelled by a gap in the grandstands to make it worse. Worse where the are trees or grandstands🤔
Depends where and in what direction, fast corner wind from front = good, Wind from back = not good, Straight wind from front bad obviously, And then you have to change breaking depending if you have head wind or tail wind. With this ground effect cars drivers handle the wind but its very difficult if you get gusts or change of direction as it disrupts the floor that changes down force.

Lewis is faster on entry and George faster on exit.
Looking at the trace analysis, you see LH is faster in the slow corners, and George is faster on the straights and fast corners.
I saw a trace of today’s qualifying, and GR was pulling away on the straight at the start of S1. Lewis gained time back on T3 but had a correction on T4 that cost him time, but he was still up in the sector. This pattern, except for another correction, continued throughout the lap.
I don't know if GR’s car is faster or the speed diff is due to their driving still. GR is consistently faster according to the speed traps.

Bye bye Perez
let's see if Lewis can redeem himself. Canada he should have qualified on the front row like this time. He was super critical of himself not because he finished just behind George, but because he knew he could have won Canada had he qualified on the front row.
lol hes kidding himself but not me
@@PazLeBon he surely was not kidding. he knew he could have won that race and his q3 let him down. His q2 time would have been more than enough to start on the front row. Mercedes were the fastest in Canada, and if it were him starting from pole, he wouldn't have done the same mistakes George did.
Lando has a habit of screwing up important Q3 laps, think he’s favourite for the win but depends on if Max can fully have the car fixed..
Not one reference to the highly talented O Piastri.. don’t discount Oscar. And I’m a Brit.
AUScar F1astri FTW! ;)
Peter's always banging on about OP
Everybody respects Oscar I think, future WDC.
A thinking driver Austria was his best weekend IMO
Tbh I think there is so much drama ahead of Oscar that his performances go under the radar. Hes rarely caught in any serious trouble too. Im happy that hes quietly getting on with things. He'll win before too long.
he came like 5th or 7th again in second fastest car
Always making up excuses for Hamilton
Hmmm 3 brits on front row, and only get a 9 min video?
Bro we kno he biased towards max and RB
3 Brits on front row. Amazing. If only that will go well in the first few corners. ;)
@@dshepherd35 thats a genunelly hilarious one
George beat lewis by almost 2 tenths, it's alot larger gap than you make it sound
That's about half a cars lengths
That's less than a blink of a eye
Anything that makes you sleep better at night mate.
0.171 is nothing really.
And Incase you just started watching F1, I'll remind you that the actual race is what matters not the quali.
@@andrehoward5130 yep, as he said, huge!
@@jkbzz 0.17 is a lot ffs, are you all pissed?
