In my opinion, what "killed" this industry it's, ironically, the modernization.
Games before were made by nerdy guys and gals for nerdy guys and gals, which focused on delivering experiences and entertainment which were made out of passion.
But at some point, someone noticed 2 things: games are profitable, even more than other media like movies or music. And that games are expensive to produce.
And slowly but steady, the objective of games wasn't to provide meaning experiences and entertainment but to earn the most in the shortest time possible.
EA turned from a respectable publisher to a mugger that assaults you in a solitary street at night. And the worst part is that other companies are following that example.
Hell, even some cars have membership options that allow to turn on the heaters on the seats for a mensual fee.

Well one thing is a problem with you as a gamer, rather than modern gaming itself. It's just my opinion, but if you're not playing a game for fun, but for some other kind of validation or reward, I'd have to say you're doing it wrong. It's nice to have progress marked and things unlocked, but if the core game isn't fun to you, and that's not the reason you're playing it, I gotta ask you to examine what you're doing, and especially why you're doing it. I play games purely for fun, I've left competitive gameplay completely behind at my age. It's a hobby, it's meant to be relaxing, not stressful. You probably shouldn't use being good at a game as a crutch for feeling good about yourself either, that's not healthy or helpful. True validation only comes from within, everything else is just chasing illusions, and being played like a game yourself. Remember that you are the player, and I urge you all to remember to play for fun.

When I was 13 I started to read sci-fi novels. I read thousands of book till around my early 20's. The best sci-fi stories were written between 50's - 70's. Nowadays you can't find easily a sci-fi story you haven't read somewhere in the past: the writers wrote every new thoughts back in time and recent writers can't find new topic in the genre. So I changed books for movies and started to watch sci-fi movies made between late 70's - 2000's. Later I couldn't find a movie I didn't see in the past - in conception or elements. Then I went to play games. I mean I've played games since my teenage (in 80's) but rarely. Now this is my main hobby. During this time priod I saw how the games have changed. In the early decades the developers dreamed something put that into a game and the gamers enjoyed that (with it's bad and good aspect as well - we were happy we can play a game). And the developers had fantasy how to write a story and how to implement that to the screen. Now the developers can't show new things in their games if you have played with the 80's-2000's games. You can see a progress in a bad way in these areas - I think I could put the music in the row. Somehow the fantasy of the makers is decreased - or disappeared - and they just pull things from the past. Therefor I rather watch old movies, play older games twice than try something new. Of course I follow what is new in the game or movie industry with one eye but I can find a hidden gem very rarely.
Note about gamer community: I don't play much with online pvp games but because I like sim games I've played with Warthunder planes since 2013 and World of ships since 2015. In the early years the players in the team helped to each other even if they were strangers. For now you can't find this attitude everyone plays alone (inside a team) or if they want to help they don't know how. They don't know how the game works - and I can't see their will for that.
Note for game developing: earlier the devs payed attention and money for testing their products (they didn't want to loose their renome). In the endcredit of a game you could read who were the testers of that game. Nowadays they don't want to pay for that so we, the gamers, are the testers. We buy a game in a bad state, test it by play and we give feedback about problems. They work on these feedback problems, gave us patches and a couple of weeks, months, years later we get the final and good version. That is why I wait for a while (even years if have to) to buy a game. It is not urgent for me I can play older games...
    Peace

I was born in 1987. I think something else people don't often consider is how *absolutely HUGE* MMOs were in the mid-to-late 2000's.
Starting in 2004, World of Warcraft ALONE consumed such a huge percentage of the gamer population at the time (and all of their attention) that, by the time we all touched grass again for the first time in 2010, the entire gaming landscape had completely changed. Getting upset at reviewers who take handouts and then promoting Angry Joe who takes handouts for games is sorta weird.
I guess, my take is that this need for the AAA space to succeed is not something I care about. For one, I do think it's worth having the conversation around what constitutes indie and AAA, because I see some confusion around developers like Larian. I think they prove to be an interesting example because they have sort of evolved. The funding and budget is what indicates most people's perception of indie and AAA, or I think it is the most valid criteria. BG3 had a massive budget for that game. I think it would be interesting if they had a reduced budget for DOS 3 because it would highlight this transitional state. Not every game needs to be some huge sprawling thing, and requires infinite expansion. That said, Larian and Supergiant are the types of developers who are so big and established that they have transcended that space.
Another interesting game to view from that perspective is Dave the Diver. Most people looked at that game and called it an indie game and assumed it was. It even got nominations as an indie game, but it was developed in part by Nexon. Nexon is a publicly traded company with hundreds of billions of dollars in value. Would we call that an indie studio?
I bring all this up because these sort of contradict with the very generalized tones of your argument. You even mentioned From Soft and how much you enjoyed Elden Ring.
Are you mad at the AAA games, or are you mad at certain trends with some developers, studios, and audiences? If so, I suppose I just wonder why that matters so much. People get so caught up in complaining about these people, and I just find it to be a waste of time and energy. I think there are very real problems in the industry that often don't get enough light because we keep complaining about people who buy battle passes and it play the latest sports game. What about the crunch, layoffs, the sexual abuse, and lack of labor support in the industry? These are all issues with human costs that people don't talk about enough.
If you are mad because there aren't enough good games, then I feel like that's more of an issue with people not looking hard enough or being willing to expand their horizons and try new things, not the fault of people not creating innovative games.

Thank you for acknowledging the sexism. I am very late to gaming, I started because I wanted to connect with my son, but really fell in love with games people played ages ago like GTA and LA Noir. I really struggle a lot of the time but I love it and that’s not because I’m female it’s simply because I’m new. I also love watching TH-cam videos about the games but all of them are so geared towards guys and so is the chat in the games. I do find the competitiveness really hard sometimes too as I am competitive, it’s why I play but it can get so nasty and toxic!

I agree with all of this. I'm not even a hardcore gamer but even I experience this garbage online. I have too much to say for a youtube comment but most of these arguments are genuinely why I don't even bother trying out new games. One thing I do disagree with is the small cyberpunk argument. If I remember correctly it was released way too early because the community kept complaining about it being in development too long (which is another thing you said). The money argument is also valid. An example I've experienced is clash royale with a new card they put in the game. The only realistic way of getting it is paying like €40. Pay to win and greedy. I've heard something about rockstar thinking about charging gamers hourly because "€80 is too cheap for 100+ hours of 'fun'". This greed isn't just the companies, a friend of mine is becoming a game dev because he says he has a good idea AND it will make a lot of money. Gaming used to be (in my opinion) for gamers, by gamers. And now it's just a money game. "Keep cranking out new stuff and remasters that people will spend money on or you're fired" is the vibe I get from the current gaming industry. The pvz reference was funny but I don't know if you've heard about garden warfare. It's not a battle royale but it is a shooter, and it got a "follow up" game called battle for neighborville. They removed pretty much everything and added trash pve, a story mode and didn't bother making more than like 4 pvp maps. This is a prime example of companies making "new games" because of the popularity of previous games. I'm sorry for the long comment, I really tried keeping it short lol, but these things are just big problems that really need to be fixed, even though they probably won't be. Keep up the good work👍

Yes, I agree with almost everything you have to say, and I suppose this falls in the umbrella of following trends, but one of the more recent tropes of completely excluding beautiful women from games, while there can be sexy men in games, the recent say, 3 to 5 years, good looking beautiful or sexy women have been like finding water in a desert scenario. It's as if they have gone so far to be inclusive, they have gone and become exclusive.
Look at MJ from spiderman 2 or the protag from fable, or even Alannah from cp2077... The male models either look as good as or better than their real life counter parts, where as the women always have to look worse than their real life person.
I find it strange that these are the people who call onlyfans models brave and powerful, but when it comes to adding good looking models in games, they say it's unrealistic body proportions or something that belongs in 2002.
Just look at Stellar Blade protag and her real life counter part. They look so similar...

I agree with you, I grew up during the ps2 era of gaming. With games such as Jak and Daxter, Rachet and Clank, True Crime, Soul Caliber, War Of The Monsters, and Oblivion. Simply put, what killed off the creativity and the risk that companies were willing to take has to mostly do with greed. Why make a product that might not make as much money? When you can release a product that makes a consistent stream of revenue. It’s the reason you see every multiplayer game in this era of gaming with a “shop” or a “battle pass”. That 70$ just isn’t enough for them anymore. What used to be a fun and enjoyable hobby is now seen as an exploitation of a wider audience consisting mostly of children! It is the reason I respect the studios that made games such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Eldin Ring, Rachet and Clank Rift apart, Tears of The Kingdom, Mario Wonderland, and Spider-Man 2. It reminds me of a time when games were made with the intention of simply playing and enjoying. I am not perfect though I can admit that I have spent a considerable amount on micro-transactions to games such as Killing Floor 2, Apex Legends, Dead by Daylight, and recently Yugioh Master Duelist. I can acknowledge that I am a part of the problem. However I cannot say I entirely agree with blaming only the developers. I believe they are people just like you and me. I think the way that they became developers is because they enjoy the hobby just as much as you and me. I believe that it is mostly the executives of these triple A studios to blame. Why is it that Bobby Kotick is a billionaire with a private jet and a yacht that laid off hundreds of his own employees? He didn’t need to do that he made more than quadruple the salary of a game developer at Activision Blizzard. It’s all about money to these executives they don’t see gaming as a form of entertainment and art they see it as a product. To put it in a metaphorical context his ship was sinking when he seen MW3 didn’t get any praise at all so he hopped into his own life boat by selling Activision Blizzard to Microsoft. The Executives are the problem! The only way to affect them is with your wallet. Just simply don’t buy their products. While I do think that is a great solution for us responsible for our money I don’t think that it is a great solution for children. I believe a great solution is to get the government involved. I mean look at what happened to loot boxes? They only got rid of them because the government stepped in and said this is a form of gambling. I believe that having them get involved with the monitoring of the monetization of videogames would be a great solution for children. If you got this far, thank you for reading this. I only left a comment because of 37:36 I hope you enjoyed reading this, and thank you🙏🏽.

Quite a message so I'll try to go over a few things here. If it seems I only blame developers i may have sent a wrong message, because in my opinion they're the ones actually trying to put something out there that's fun to play. Also Activision Blizzard was bought a year or two back but it takes time for these things to move with ownership and has nothing to do with MW3. I also get your point with the whole let the government handle it, but seeing as that would probably also limit games it's definitely a double edged sword that could end up making gaming a mess as well

TBH, it probably changed even before then.
Battlefield 3 had unlock packs, so technically it had P2W mechanics at that point. Granted, those are nothing compared to a lot of games nowadays.
I'd say games that introduced progression/unlock/grinding systems were the start of the downhill trend, and it only got worse from there. A good game doesn't need grind to keep player interested. Nearly 2-3 decades later, people still play DOOM and Quake and those didn't have progression systems.
People like blaming mobile games for microtransactions, but microtransactions came out long before mobile gaming as we know it (smartphone apps) existed.

2024’s been a wake up call for me. I wouldn’t really the majority of AAA games coming out and I was able to find things to enjoy in most games that folks had issues. Like I really liked Forspoken’s traversal. But over time I realized just how much my standards had eroded over time because I was excusing games more and more. I hit my wall with Suicide Squad. The campaign really is horrendous and I played Doom Eternal for the first time that same weekend. Like holy shit the difference was just so obvious. The games I’ve loved this year have been unexpected like GBF Relink, Helldivers 2 and Prince of Persia. Really hit home that I don’t really need “AAA” games to play good games. AAA games can still offer the full package with games like Ghost of Tsushima but more often than not, as someone who finds gameplay king, a well tuned combat system can really come from anywhere

I would recommend trying Cyberpunk now and stoped being buthurt about it to this day. So you´re saying it would be better if they didn´t patch the game at all and just left it in the released state and moved on- you don´t have to give them awards for it, but you can still appreciate that they did deliver in the end, not many games you can say that about. Just give it a try now, you´re missing out on an amazing experience.

You make a lot of good points, though regarding reviews I want to mention that Steam's timer is messed up. For Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty I played through easily a dozen hours at least, and the game says 0 hours for my review. When I played through the entire Halo Infinite campaign, same thing.
And I think being able to review a game without a time requirement is a good thing, because some games genuinely aren't playable up to a certain point. If players aren't playing through a game's tutorial I think that DOES matter and says something about performance and/or design of the tutorial. Or of course, sometimes games are misleading and don't even reflect marketing or the way they're displayed, and I don't mean something like Cyberpunk's release. There's lots of niche indie games, so some of them are bound to be really awful and just a scam. It happens and people need to be able to call it out.

There is SO much I could comment on in this video. However, I will keep it to one single issue for my own sanity's sake-
    The Cost of Games:
I was born in 1970 and have been playing Videogames since 1976 when my parents bought my Brother and I our first PONG system. In 1978, we were lucky enough to get a Sears Tele-Arcade (their version of the Atari 2600.) A SINGLE Game Cartridge back then also cost $60.
The Dollar has depreciated SO much since then, do you know what that is in (late)2023 dollars?
    $280.40
I despise modern corporate culture and what it has done to gaming, I am NO fan of theirs. But even taking that and all the technological improvements into account, $70 for a single game is an amazing bargain. Look at what cars cost in 1978, look at what HOUSES cost in 1978. Considering how badly the dollar has tanked since then, game companies have done a frankly amazing job at keeping game costs stable.

It's someone creative idea they wanted to realize into a game. Like this whole gaming is getting worse is just a over exaggerated way to say triple A has become sht. The tool for making games where never that accessible before, now is the time for indie games and there're alot of them and they're very affordable, and who can forget Kojima still making absolute masterworks. I don't have official statistics, just "personal statistics" based on anecdotal stuff and personal experiences, but I have some female relatives who make sure to NOT reveal that they are female in games. While the vast majority of men are normal (if they revealed themselves as female to 98% of men, there would be NO problems) there is that small minority of male players (about 2%) who will make life hell for them online. I don't think charging $70 for a game is such a bad thing. The amount of entertainment you get from a videogame (lets say 60hrs, that's $1.17 per hour) is actually a really good deal for what you pay. The problem is charging AAA price for grade A dogshit games. Anything unfinished, predatory, etc. has no excuse. Fortnite, League of Legends, Apex Legends, these are free games that have premium content that you can pay for but don't have to and are still able to maintain a profit. Developers get greedy asking for an upfront cost as well as asking for players to pay for additional content.
Overwatch 1 had a great monetization method imo. I remember everyone knocking Blizzard for the loot boxes, but there was 0 problem with it. It was so easy to earn them by playing the game that you'd have to be a moron to pay for them. Then they went to Overwatch 2 where they made it nearly impossible to earn the rewards without buying the battle pass. Not to mention the lie of PvE content.

Nostalgia isnt really appropriate. Its when you romanticize your past though it wasnt truly as good as remember. This was actually true in terms of games to some degree. We can experience them again and compare them with today's games, compare developers past to present. Gaming has taken over as a major industry. Like Hollywood. They get lazy. They cut corners. Sadly its not the many that put in the real sweat and tears but the unseen greedy few who only give deadlines and increase their bank account. It used to be broad distincitions in companies/developers vision and execution but now its as if the industry leaves as little room for innovation little more than the point of a needle and it shows. You can barely tell the difference from each developers product. Again its driven by the people at the top and its just nose diving the whole industry. Theres of course many reasons youve stated and expanded on well, all which are valid. Hopefully the paradigm shifts soon.

When we stop pushing the big AAA companies for innovation, is when gaming will truly die. You can already see examples of this happening with the massive amount of microtransactions being added into games, which hold a higher priority over fixing bugs and releasing actual gameplay features or even new games. Me too, even though i stopped at PS2 and Xbox 360, many things about them are better for me, here's some of them:
    -Unlockable Characters:
Be them clones or not (Evil Ryu), Broken or not (Omega Rugal,Gogeta SS4) or shitty or not (Dr.Bosconovitch) it's still an fun thing to find them and say "YES! I GOT THEM ALL!"
    -Funny Glitches:
Some of them are goofy as fuck and unfortunately in modern games would be patched day 1 (best example i can give is Megaman X Collection, which still maintain the original glitches intact)
    -Color Edit:
Something which i *LOVE* about old games is the option to edit the characters colors (example: swap Ryu and Ken's colors) SNK takes the cake since in some of their games you can even change the color of your specials!
-Large Character Rosters for Casual Players:
You probably saw it coming, but as an casual player, my best bet for games is content, Characters, Modes, etc.
And most of the PS2 games know that by their big cast of Fighters on Fighting games (Take a look at KOF 2002 UM, it has the biggest KOF cast of it's time and the characters all have something unbalanced about them, and that's fun already for me)
    -Bad Games that people love:
And at last, Bad Games exist, we can't evict them, and while some of them are bad without salvation, others can be good enough to give you a good experience and even gave birth to masterpieces after these failures:
-Crash Wrath of Cortex gave us Twinsanity
-Devil May Cry 2 gave us Devil May Cry 3
-Mortal Kombat 4 gave us Deadly Alliance
-Megaman X5 gave us Megaman Zero
But I've rambled for long enough, and of course, it's *your* experience that matters, maybe something i said hasn't happened with you, and that's because we have our different thoughts.
That's how it is, and how it'll always be...

Ok let me explain to you the competetiveness, this environment was always competetive. Originally the competetive aspect was down to skill, reaction time, and knowledge about the game. This meant a lot of people who werent as fast or as quick learning were left in the dust - these people cried to the developers - the developers made it so that the main way to compete now is to buy power. Skill ceilings are low and they are not based about mechanical skill. This is essentially the result of casual gamers demands that they be let in on thesame level of rewards and competition as the hardcore gamers. Now they dont like that because the competetiveness usually reserved for top 10% of hardcore gamers is kept within their zeitgeist, their perview. Be careful what you wish for.

For a person like myself who is way too busy to play 50 games a year, when i do sit down to play something I need it to be greatness or I need to be doing something else. Yeah I can play a Hades or Sea of Stars and consider it greatness. In no way do I want a gazillion games to play rather than a few select legendary ones. My time is too valuable. If I play something I want to remember it like it happened to me yesterday 30 years from now.
Simply having more AA games does nothing for me, because the likelihood any of those games will compete with the next great AAA are gonna be miniscule. I am simply never trading Sea of Stars or Hades for Cyberpunk or FF7 Remake. so yes, this makes no sense. This is proper for those with far more time, unfortunately gamers have grown up and more of us are busy and if we are the ones spending more money then NO I have absolutely no problem with nothing but AAA games because AA or AAA is not my standard. Too many people just rely on ratings and pre-release hype. Don't just look at rating. Look at what the reviews actually say and what evidence they give to back up those claims. That is the same way you should be handling any information. Also stop buying stuff on pre-release. There is no need to be trying to race to be "first". If it does matter for the game then the devs failed at balancing and pacing. You should reconsider buying a game where the devs failed that so early.
I don't think it makes sense to timegate reviews. For some games it is possible to realize very quickly that it is not a good game.

Nowadays is pretty hard to resist their mind tricks in marketing, FOMO... they have the best experts in playing with our mind! I really try, I swear... I feel the same that we must made they change with our wallets, but it is pretty hard honestly. The child inside me is so crazy with as much incredible free games and so many new experiences to choose. I usually only like indies I totally tired of AAA, but games as Fortnite, Naraka, Apex or Warframe are so fun! I cannot avoid it.

I hate to break it to you, but the issue is much less that their marketing is just OP and much more that people are just well......dumb. For whatever reason, every year the poor/working class has steered towards making the movie, Idiocracy, a reality. It's easy to say "just don't be dumb", but I honestly have no idea what the root problem/cause of your condition is.

TBF CDPR cleaned up Cyberpunk, now Bethesda's name is mud as Starfield is currently not appreciated. There are still good experiences to be had, i enjoy Death Stranding that works partially online, my biggest competitive game online was Unreal Tournament 99. You couldn't tear me away. I'm not compelled to play much online now except for Diablo 3.

I'm not sure how they ought to handle time gating reviews. I had a game where I ran into a game breaking bug 2 minutes in on Electrician Simulator. The in game computer to set up your company logo wouldn't work right and stopped me from completing the first 3 minutes or so first job to get your business started. I refunded it, and had spent so little time playing I couldn't review it. If there was a 2 hour time gate to leave a review, but you can return it up to 1:59 of game play, then you would block out every refunded copy from being able to leave a review. And what if you buy a game, decide after 30 minutes it has a terrible technical problem, but you let it sit around for 2 weeks? Then you lose the ability to really do anything but sit there with a bad purchase, unless you just let the game sit running for 2 hours. I'd say if you refund it, you should get flagged to leave a review, but then that's what all the 0.1 hour reviews probably are, someone bought, ran it long enough to review, then probably refunded it. And to not screw over someone from leaving a bad review over 2 weeks but only 30 minutes of game play, you would probably have to just not have the time gating anyway. I think a time gating option would end up doing more harm to legitimate reviews than actually solve any of the poor review problem.

Some games require large patches too BTW, and for people with crap internet... it could take well over 2 hours to download. That could be a huge problem.

i think there is nothing wrong if some of us don't know how to play a video game i don't see that as a bad thing i think nobody is dumb and wrong to me for having difference opinion i think it's ok to have difference honest opinions it doesn't mean them dumb to me at all but i do agree as long we are always be honest express how we truly feel about video game software and hardware i also agree games are way too expensive now i also don't like the games are now way too expensive too i wish games software and hardware was affordable not expensive i don't like that but at the sametime i respect your difference opinions and i want to say that i'm a huge sonic the hedgehog fan that all of the new sonic games were not bad to me i wasn't disappointed with them but i know the majority think new sonic games are bad but to me the new sonic games are great sonic games to me i love enjoy them in my hoenst unpopular opinion the only sonic game i didn't like i think that was bad to me is sonic chronicles dark brotherhood that's about it

I don't need to guess how many women are playing online. Out of the women I've dated, friends, family, friends' wives or daughters, from both coasts of the US, I know how many are into video games. No, it's not a scientific study but if its half there's no way I could miss it. You're trying so hard with 'look at these numbers' 'see this graph' and I see it. I don't see anywhere near enough women playing games that reflect what you want your viewers to believe. The most I've interacted with was around 2014 and they all gathered online against the sexism in games narrative. The truth is most people don't care and there are only two types that propagate this divisive rhetoric. One wants to share with the world their glorious virtue. The other has an agenda. Then again you might just have a crush on someone in your gender studies class in which case ignore everything I said and get a good lawyer.

@K.C-2049 I enjoy them too much to hate and while they've called me many things, that's not one of them. This isn't about past times, it's about video games. It's about the women I know, my entire family, my friends' families, and yours. I don't see it and neither do you. An effective way to express 'I got nothing' is to lead with an attack on one's character followed by an off-topic misrepresentation. Those numbers hold up if you're watching Twitch maybe but as I said before, it doesn't matter how many women play games. Most people play to have fun. We don't need or want propaganda in our games. If you're one of the few who do, best of luck to you. I wouldn't want to have to live in those shoes.

Lol, mainsplaining is not discrimination, neither are dismissive messages or sexual messages. Those are things you labeled because you haven't confronted your own insecurities yet 😂 discrimination would be when a developer locked you out of a game because you are a different gender then him.

Creativity didn't died off, you're just older so obviously games will feel less creative than when you were a kid with no gaming experience, you can say it's gaming fault just cause you don't feel the same. Also it's really unfair to expect every games to come up with new concept when we already have 20 years of game history, at this point gaming is like cinema, you can't create anything that wasn't already done.

Even I don't like modern gaming myself from seeing with the greed and rush games and the anti consumer decisions by the gaming companies and even of course.
With the always online crap with online only games or force online only on to video games that even have a single player which it is never good for the people that don't
Have good internet and can also suck for the people that don't even have internet at all which really sucks how anything now needs an internet connection.
And even modern gaming has fanboy's aka console fanboy's or video game fanboy's that will fight over a game console or video games and even will defend them
Since there are even people that defend the always online crap! back when I have seen comments from people saying who doesn't have internet 🤓 or someone saying.
Imagine not having internet 🤓which I'm like to them would you be happy if your internet goes down on you and you wouldn't be able to play them though? and I even
Have encountered two funny users that defend this always online crap from one that tells me to go touch grass when I reply the dude defending back 4 blood being online only.
During it's launch which I find it irony though since I wish I would say to him you want to tell me to touch grass when you're literally defending this game being online only?
Which maybe you should touch grass lol and I remember some other user defend that game being online only and even calls me a grandpa over me being against the game.
Being online only even when I'm also too young to be one which he just decides to be so ignorant just to defend a video game being online only that ends up being abandoned
That is being left 4 dead for good LOL! like damn it can suck to see many good things were so good during their golden years aka retro gaming became to crap during.
Their modern days which I can even see why modern things get hated by many people and many of them would prefer those older things which there are times I even prefer
Older things myself but at least there still are some good modern games though.
