Done our 2022 CRV today which had the 2021 map version. Followed all the steps and deleted my old Garmin Express App first and reinstalled the latest version before downloading the Update. The uploading from the USB took about 20 minutes and as per the warning did not turn off the vehicle during the updating. Checked version afterwards and was 2024. I don’t know whether that will be the last free one as my vehicle is coming up to 3 years after purchase date in November of 2024. Even though the Garmin website states that we need a 16gb USB drive (not less, not more) and many other videos say the same, I can confirm that I was able to follow the exact steps shown in this video and install the 2021 maps (most recent) for Aus & NZ using a 32gb USB drive. In case you want to know the exact name of the drive is called - DataTraveler 100 G3 32gb USB drive. Sharing this info so that you try using the current USB drive you may have. If that doesn’t work then buy the 16gb one. All the best.

I am no stranger to doing this on portable units and Garmin Express was already on my computer. The idea of possible bricking a car GPS made me hesitant. Now we have all new 2023 North America maps! I used a nextech 32GB jump drive formatted to FAT32 and it took about 20 minutes to upload in the car with it running the whole time.
Was this a 2.0 or 3.2 generation. I can’t get pass the update to be put on the drive. To update the Navi system in the car. I’m using a 16 gb drive but it won’t do nothing
I worked from the Garmin web page of instructions, but used this video to make sure I had understood them correctly (as I was scared of the worst case - buggering my in car sat nav). Would recommend this combination, as the written page is very easy to follow after having seen the video (and that is the manufacturer page, so should be 100% correct). 2 mins in the car to do the first bit, about 15 mins with the engine running to do the update. About an hour and half on the computer to load the maps onto the usb drive in between. I used a 16Mb Toshiba usb drive, following the Garmin instructions to format it slightly differently to the default (allocation sizes I think were the change). Honda CRV 2018 (UK model). One tiny warning - the maps in the car take a minute or two to sort out after doing the update, which is a bit scary if you haven't seen it before on updating other Garmin devices. Patience and rigidly following the instructions reward you. I can now see all my maps are 2020 onwards, which was not the case before (some were 2016, as I don't think my car had ever had its maps updated before I got it last year).
In case anyone has difficulty getting the Garmin app or your Honda to recognize your USB or flash drive. Reformat it to Fat32. It will not read ExFat format.

On the 3rd step, it's written that during the update the engine must be running while the vehicle is parked, but do I really need to be parked? If I'm driving during the installation, will it stop the process (of course I will start driving once I have started the installation)? Because here in Switzerland, it's forbidden to let the engine running, I could be amended if a cop see me. Thanks in advance for your answer and my apologies for my english.

When I bought my car there was navigation and apps like pandora (etc) on that display , but during the first month I had so many continual but random issues with the car linking to my phone. So finally one day I reset to factory settings and then I lost everything. I probably would use this same method to re-install those apps. Would u know how I download those types of apps?

Ron, I have a 2018 CR-V. I went directly to Garmin's website and downloaded and installed the express and run it. You will have to have your usb plugged directly into the computer and you will add a device. The software will read the info from the usb drive, then download. Once finished, then take your usb back to your CRV and continue your directions.

Hi Rick, I stumbled upon your video in the recommended section while watching a 2016 Honda Civic GPS update video. I have a 2018 CR-V touring and have a couple of questions that I am hoping you can answer? I used a 32GB flash drive to download the maps from my vehicle with no problem. When I went to insert the flash drive in my computer (I have a Mac) it was saying that it was unable to “detect the device.” Was that the same problem you were having with the flash drive? If so, how did you get the Gamin file from the flash drive to the SD card? Did you just drag the file over or did you go back into your CR-V and do the process over? Since you used the 16GB SD card would you think a 16GB flash drive would work if I didn’t want to use a SD card? Thank you!
If you have a 16GB flash drive, I would try that. I would try inserting it into your Mac and formatting it as "FAT" using Disk Utility. With the formatted drive, I would try running through the procedure. If you have trouble with Disk Utility, let me know and I can walk you through it.

Sorry, I'm not sure on that vehicle. I'm not sure there are other options besides buying the update through Honda. Sometimes it is cheap to buy a separate GPS unit than it is to update the vehicle's GPS.

Instead of running the engine you could connect a battery charger to support the power drain.

Need to update. I had to jump through hoops to get to the 75.00 charge.

I don't. I actually had to look that one up. We don't have that model in the US.
So this means I will have to leave my car running for up to 2 to 4 hours ?

It works in/for countries covered by Garmin maps and Garmin Express.
