I really find your videos helpful. I paddle boarded for the first time this week, and it saved me so much time to watch a few of your videos, rather than try to figure things out for myself. I was able to stand up and paddle easily the first time using the techniques that you demonstrated (in another video), and I was also able to get back on the board in deep water. Super useful instruction and well explained. Thanks Ethan. :)

That's great! I'm stoked you were able to find the tips helpful and (hopefully) had a fun time. 🙂

    Another informative video.
    I’m still learning.
    Thx
Update- I’m still learning and enjoy your videos so much so that I’ve watched this one several times. I usually watch ‘em the night before I go out and then again after as a recap to figure out what I did right and wrong.
I truly hope you are being compensated for these great videos. I’ve had so many private lessons from you just by watching.
    Thx again.

Thank you very helpful. Maybe some time you can get someone to accompany you and demonstrate on the water :D

I like the hinge the hip a bit. I get lower back pain on my left hand side. I will practice this.

any exercises around shifting the hip to the side?
for better control, maybe coordinated with some leg/core/balance work?

I find Yoga workouts to be very beneficial in helping improve core balance. Here's another TH-cam channel called Breathe and Flow I follow that offers some great workouts and exercises. th-cam.com/users/BreatheandFlow

I have a few questions. I tried this technique last weekend so as you said if im paddling on my right then my hips should shift to left hand side but is it normal my left leg is straighter than my right when I do it? Also I see many other paddlers even sup youtubers who doesn't do this technique they all paddle like a normal person standing straight or slightly bend their knees?

Great question. The main goal is to stand in a "ski boot" stance where your knees are in a slightly bent position. If your board is wider, or if this technique is newer to you, you may find that one of your legs straightens or un-straightens as you paddle. This is common and it simply takes time for your body to learn the new posture and stroke before you find that your knees move less.
I'm planning on releasing another video talking more about this technique but focusing more on how to properly hinge at your hips as you paddle which will also help eliminate knee movement.

Hi, my background is kayak and open canoe. In those craft I use body rotation to engage the core and I tend to carry this into SUP. Am I wrong here?

Great question. I don't have a large background in kayak or canoe so unfortunately I can't give you a full answer. I imagine it will be very similar as you do use some body rotation to engage the core like in a kayak (although not as much twisting to the side). The slight differences come in SUP when we stack our hands on our paddle in order to allow us to burry our blade vertically in water, pulling ourselves to it. So, your body rotation to achieve this will be different than in a kayak, but similar principles apply as you still rotate your hips and body slightly to engage the core muscles. Sorry, I can't help more on this, but it's a great question and observation.

Kayak paddle is mostly horizontal (hands level), but sup paddle is mostly vertical (hands plumb). So kayak twist becomes paddleboard hip hinge.
