I had my top hand too far foward as well. Just felt more "stiff" and like my other gym movements with the top arm straighter, but watching the video helps me understand now. Keeping the top hand closer to the head at the drive really increases the distance the blade gets out in front of you.......and more water pushed on each stroke. It will take some time to "undo" that habit.
Thanks for sharing this Ethan. This is hugely valuable information for both you and for us viewers. Coming from other sports I was surprised at the lack of detailed sup stroke analysis on TH-cam, there is plenty on the basics but this is pure gold ( obviously your other videos are also ;-) ). Would love to see you do more of this style of video. Combined with workout videos, you'd create a really great resource for the sup racing community. Keep up the great work 👍
Thanks Rick! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and found it to be helpful. 😁 I’ll definitely see what I can do about creating more videos like this one as well as workout videos. I appreciate your comments and for being apart of this community! 💪🏼
agree completely, I have been thinking the same thing. I have owned my fitness studio for over 20 years now, and I can say with certainty that a large majority of the public doesnt understand the basics of body position, core stiffness, hip hinging, etc. Getting into the details of the stroke mechanics is very useful. Going beyond "put the blade deeper in the water" and "row in a straight line" .......developing a decent paddleboard stroke is a lot more involved for people who don't have a functional strength training background, and in a modern world we have a huge majority of people who simply sit all day and don't do a lot of movement. Having said all of this, I think most people don't use the paddleboard as a workout tool and they use it as a way to hang out on the water with friends -- bring music and beers and get in the water once in a while. At least here in Austin Texas!
Thanks for putting this out there! I'm going to watch it repeatedly and try to apply what he's saying. You inspire me, and seeing these minor adjustments to your fluid form is super helpful.
I just got back from my morning paddle, all I was doing the entire time is working on my stroke. This info he is giving you helps immensely in what to think about while out there. Thank you. I especially like the info about how to get the proper hand spacing.
I think it was kind of brave of you to show this, as he critiqued pretty much everything you do ( even though he did it nicely). If I could paddle like you, I'd be perfectly happy, so I hope this didn't dis-encourage you at all.
What's one thing you learned from Michael that you want to apply to your stroke?
So many things, but for now I'll work more on my release :-)

Love that you're working with Michael Booth to improve your paddling. Thanks for sharing the feedback and analysis!

Thanks for sharing! So many great takeaways - I especially like what he said about really burying the blade and shaft.
Thanks for watching and yeah that was such a good tip!

That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing 😃
Grazie Ethan🤙
Thanks so much for posting Ethan! So incredibly helpful. I need to do this soon. 👊🏼
Learned a lot! I'm definitely doing the shoulder forward thing on my stroke... Gonna fix that now, thanks
This is amazing

Thank you, always room for improvement. 💪🏼
this was very informative for me! I make a lot of the same mistakes in my stroke. Thanks mate!!
Excited to get out there and be conscious to for i have been doing it vs this info. Thanks!!
Thanks for this Ethan. Super useful. I'm going to make sure my top hand is lifting up rather than swinging out. Excellent advice 👌🏻
Great advice, cool video
This is so helpful.
Great video😀
Hey, thx for that, now i must to work hard !
This is gold! Let us know how you make out after applying some of these things.
Absolutely 🤙🏼😁
Keep your hands in the middle Hand in the Middle HANDS IN THE MIDDLE!
I’m just taking up paddle boarding. Are there paddle boarding clubs somewhere? Or kayaking clubs?
It depends on where you live but some places have some amazing clubs to be apart of. I recommend looking on Facebook for any local clubs in your area.
Thanks.@@ethanhuffsup
