Boy, do I ever wish you were the one who worked on my friend's 201. $450 rebuild. When he tried to use it the next spring, it wouldn't start-at all. He won't let me try and he doesn't think the dealer will help out since it has been so long since they worked on it. Thanks again for another great educational video!!
Love your no 🐂💩 way of explaining things. It just clicks. Very relatable. Even the simplest tasks I’ve done a 1000 times I watch your way and learn something new. 👍🏻
Thanks man, youare the only guy describing what the recalibration actually intended for. I cant believe how hard the dealerships leaned on that for the user issues.
Great video Richard. You're not kidding when you said these ignition coils are pricey. I'm working on a 20 year old Poulan that needs a new one. For this saw, they are going for anywhere from $40+ to almost $60. Not sure the saw is even worth that.
Appreciate your videos. Was wondering why my ms251c was idling on the high side after i gave the cylinder a mild port. Runs great though. Used the wrong gauge business card (16 thou) to set my coil. Will reset it to 8-10 thou tomorrow. Learnt something new today thanks to you. Hopefully it'll make a difference . thanks for your advice. Cheers from NZ
Good video. If I had seen it first I never would have bought a MS201TCM. That's a beast to work on. And in the past year, I've used it once. Spoke to you last fall on the extremely hard pull and never solved it. Gonna revisit this week. Everything looks good, added a 2nd pawl the cheap bastards left out. Turns fine with no plug. Piston looks like new (it has 20 minutes on it). Gonna spray some fuel mix into the cylinder in case its dry. QUESTION: does the throttle have higher priority than the Mtronic/solenoid? It's got to or you would be dry after sitting and do damage, right?
Nice informative video Rich. I always thought a good 5 long cuts with steady pressure was the way to have these Mtronics readjust to the conditions. And I was told to let it idle for about 5 seconds before shutting down. Any truth to that?
Seen a coil do that before on a McCullough a friend inherited that had been put away for many years, did a full fuel system overhaul, would run just long enough to get the tune just about perfect🤬 and would always fire right back up🤔 thankfully I didn't chase my tail for too long before figuring it out.
What year did they put the mtronic coils in. A friend gave me an Echo. Did they have it. It was a newer saw wouldn’t run. Just dirt in carb screen. Didn’t want it back. Great small saw.
@@ToddAdams1234 thank you for your answer. I’ve always been drawn to the older saws. But want to learn more. Is it on the tags or model number? Learning also to cross reference old parts to newer. Thanks again.
@@steveriggenbach90 you’ll have to use your dealer and give him your SN# so that he can track down the yr model. Stihl isn’t forthcoming like the rest of the world.
Not related to this video. I'm about ready to split the case on a 272xp, I have a new gasket set, do you advise coating the gasket for the case to be thinly coated with a sealant or just using the gasket dry? I value your opinion.
Man I have one right now that is driving me crazy. It was dropped (not far) but it tore the intake boot and impulse. The guy ran it for a few days after. I rebuilt it completely from the bottom up all oem. I have pressure tested and all that. It will start but hesitates when you hit the trigger, doesn’t want to idle and will not reset. It’s the version 3. I wonder if when it was ran with a massive air leak if it messed up the solenoid. Also I just put a new wiring harness on it. The keyway is good. I am about pay him for all these parts and give it back to him lmao. This is the first one I have had issues with really.
Silly question, but do you have a broken clutch spring? How's the fuel filter and internal screen in the carb? If you'd like email me and I give you a call. You should be able to see it on your laptop or desktop. It won't show up on a mobile device. I'd leave my contact info in this reply buy it will get deleted.
@@richardflagg3084 just checked compression and it’s fuc*king 70 psi fresh rebuild and I cut the base. I have been chasing an mtronic problem and I have a mechanical problem!! . I’m gonna put a timing wheel back on it tomorrow and see if maybe it got knocked off in the process and I raised the exhaust too much.
Sure if you're comfortable with reinstalling the boot. The top handle swap (for me) can be done in like 8 minutes. Replacing the boot can be tedious for most.
Just tried it, went smooth. I was worried about feeding the wire back through but it was no problem with a needle nose pliers.I hate taking the handle off for some reason. Awesome video, covered a lot of interesting topics, thank you
When all else fails replace the coil. yeah trying to get a bad coil that won't Not show fire can be aggravating it's all get out. I've seen them show all types of different symptoms from running poorly when you first started and running great when it gets hot to running great when you first started and crapping out when it gets hot. Acting like it's starving for fuel all the time showing fire. Try to keep a bunch of test coils laying around the shop. When everything else checks out I'll throw one of them on problem solved. Maybe about 45 minutes later

Having the same issue with mine! Will just shut off in wood like I’m hitting the kill switch going to give this a shot thank you for this video
I’ll just have to go by what you have learned and hopefully keep it in the back of my mind.

Starting the day right! I need one of these little saws
My 881 has a tire mark on it too. And a brand new handle.
Richard...Great video of what to look for in M-Tronic saws. Curious what that coil goes for?
$150ish
@@richardflagg3084 Would love to know where it's made. If it's Stihl private labeled from China, it cost under $5 tops.
Rich nice info on the coil install ❤❤❤

Idle after run before shutdown is to let it cool off a bit.
Great video! I like your down to earth thoughts! Can test such a coil (201TC) with an ohm meter?
Kind Regards,
Ramon
Wow that lil booger is angry - git it👍👍
Do you have any videos or provide tips on using coils and rings to replace OLD saws. Having trouble finding new that matches. Thanks and take care.
Was that saw ported? It seemed to have that tell tale "vibrato" of a ported saw in the wood.

It was right around 2010, but it depended on the saw.

What about taking the spark plug boot off and threading the wire? Any chance that would allow you to skip removing the handle?
